Discussion ππ―οΈ To those who lament the weakening of the "monoculture"
Well for one it's technically really polyculture that's talked about but anyways I first want to ask to those who considered themselves beneficiaries of "monoculture" how much of the stuff that was part of it stuff you genuinely liked on your accord on how much of it did peer pressure play a role into you partaking in it?
You may want that "social cohesion" back or having something everyone knew but what about a big enforcer of monoculture? The conformity, the groupthink and peer pressure for others to fit in. It may be easy to lament over as beneficiary but what if you were on the receiving end of it? with the monoculture being largely filled with things you either disliked or didn't care about and didn't want to hear about? And not really having an option to find things that you actually like? some may be willing to force themselves to fit in many will not.
I can sympathize with wanting community or shared experiences. I too have things have things I really like that I would love to be more popular so I can discuss it with people IRL but at that same time it is also through the weakening of monoculture that it made it even remotely possible to find some things that really did influence me and are some of all time favorites. Sure I still feel alienated from the lack of stuff I really like in pop culture but I also wouldn't have benefited from the monoculture of old because I wasn't willing to fake it just to fit I'd just be more miserable. But is the conformity and removal of options of old monoculture really necessary in order to have that possibility of having more people to bond over your favorites with? It's not something I want to force onto others.

Discussion ππ―οΈ People's acceptance of talking machines has changed over the decades
I grew up in the 70s. "Tillie the Teller" was a talking ATM machine, very much ahead of its time.
It kind of flopped. People didn't want machines talking to them, as it turned out. Somewhat later, in the 80s there were talking Coke machines. People didn't like that either.
Nowdays, everybody seems to completely accept machines talking, chatting, giving directions and advice. What changed?

Discussion ππ―οΈ Do you guys consider the late 50s-early 60s to be seperate from the core 50s?
gallerythere were some important events, like the day the music died and the tragic plane crash, the election of JFK, etc etc. but do you guys think the changes are big enough to call it a seperate chunk of the 50s/60s or not? interestingly, many things people associated with the 50s actually seemed to start in the late 50s.
