Discussion Fusion is unbelievably frustrating compared to After Effects. How did you get over the hardship of learning it?

87 Upvotes

I'm trying to do simple movements, text, zooms and stuff, and the way Fusion is built makes me pull my hair out.
Want to make a simple square? Make a background node->mask.
Want to animate it? Make a transport node.
Want to add an image and change its size? Eat shit, because the transport crops the image based on it's original size.

Every single simple step requires so many nodes, frustration, and things that would take 2 steps in After Effects take here 10. I am so close to just go back to Adobe... How do you get over this unnecessary complications and headaches?

* I get that Fusion can do EVERYTHING AE can, but come on... Why does everything has to be so much more annoying with how it works? Let me change an image size from the damn image node, why do we need a different node for this?

Help Freezes when exporting individual clips

Post image
• Upvotes

For the last year or so, when I try to export as individual clips, with the “render timeline effects” box checked, the render freezes around 3% and then the time to export continues to go up by several minutes and doesn’t end up exporting so I have to force quit the app.

If I uncheck Render timeline effects, they export but then my clips aren’t the way I want them to look. The only timeline effects I have is clip speed (100% slowed to 40%) and stabilization. I haven’t found anyone else dealing with this issue either

Attached is a picture of my export settings.

Help Assistance Request with Green Screen

1 Upvotes

Hello friends! I'm trying to achieve an effect via Resolve and I'm curious if anyone can help me, as google/youtube/etc. have not been helpful. Nor have I found any guide online for this.

I'm trying to do a two-pronged approach: I have a green screen which I have inverted here. my goal is to have the inverted cut out (Aka everything BUT the green screen) show footage inside it while the green screen shows different footage.

Essentially, this would have two different footages playing simultaneously: One footage in the inverted cut out, the other footage in the green screen area.

Would this be possible via resolve? Or would I need to do something else to replicate this effect?

Help Lua scripts - color page

1 Upvotes

I am curious if anyone has been successful in getting scripts to work in the color page. I keep hitting a wall. On the edit page anything I want to make works.

I have bins, clips in bin, those clips are colour coded based on the time of day during the wedding. Morning / Mass / Cocktail etc etc.

I wanted the script to see the colours assigned to the clips, add them to groups with the names.

I can’t even get by that, it will create the group but won’t add “all green clips to cocktail hour group”

The next step was to apply my saved power grades , pre group/ clip level / post clip and timeline look node. But I think that will also be a big issue now.

Help | Beginner Constant freezing and stutters

4 Upvotes

I’m on Windows 11. My GPU is an Asus Dual 6700XT with 12gb, 32gb DDR4 and a 5600x CPU.

I’m dealing with constant freezes and crashes whenever I click on the keyframe window, and also when using some other tools.

This is making working with the software completely unbearable. I used Vegas Pro before and I never had to deal with issues like this. Does anybody have any idea how to fix this?

Help | Beginner Image doesn't look "sharp" even though I used 8k resolution

2 Upvotes

I want to do a map animation and because I wanted to be able to zoom in I used a high resolution 8k map. But the image just doesn't look sharp. I tried to read here and found out it might be because I'm using a 1080p timeline and that makes the image compress weirdly? But I'm not sure and I didn't find a solution. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Help Facing an unusual issue in Fusion

1 Upvotes

Hello! I'll try to explain it well.

I am editing a 1920x1080 project at 60fps, version 21.1.1. In the Edit page timeline, I am inserting a 596x585 image taken by the Windows 11 snipping tool. The screensnip was based on a Google Images image, and it contains a white PC keyboard key with a white background.

My intention is to use Fusion to round the edges of the image so that the white background disappears and only the key is left. I tried to use a rectangle mask applied to MediaIn with rounded edges, but... it doesn't work. The mask simply won't appear in the end result. Unless... I change the MediaIn node's (the white keyboard key image) Process Mode from Full Frames to any of the four NTSC/PAL options. Only then will the rectangle mask work. I tried with other mask nodes too; same effect. This problem only arises with the snipped image. Masks on background nodes work perfectly fine. And yes, I know background nodes adopt the project's resolution.

I did sort of get the desired result aside from some odd PAL and NTSC artifacts, but I don't feel like I actually solved the underlying issue. Why does this problem occur? Am I missing something obvious? ChatGPT is of no help.

Help Automating repetitive workflow

1 Upvotes

Long-time lurker, first time poster ….

I have a talking head YouTube channel that’s essentially just me with some graphics and slides interspersed. It’s usually one recording from one camera (Sony ZVE10) with me sitting at a desk. (I assume it’s not ok to share a link to my channel, lest I be accused of drumming up views.) While the topic of the video changes from episode to episode, the editing and workflow are pretty consistent.

I have the Studio version of Resolve.

Are there any tools or tricks or techniques that I can use to automate some or all of this, or just reduce the number of clicks with my mouse? Here’s my usual workflow.

  1. Create a new bin in Resolve for this episode (I have a project for all of my YouTube videos);
  2. Copy the MP4 and all the images to the bin;
  3. Generate optimized media from the MP4 file(s);
  4. Generate a transcript from the MP4 file(s);
  5. Create a new timeline using Intelliscript from the script I use for my Elgato prompter;
  6. Apply AI Voice Isolation to the timeline;
  7. Apply Audio Normalization to the timeline;
  8. Edit the timeline;
  9. Deliver to MP4 with YouTube presets;
  10. Deliver to MP3 for the podcast version;

I did search the subreddit to see if this has been covered before and I didn’t find much. If anyone knows of any resources to figure it out myself, I’d appreciate that too. Also, if you think my workflow is dumb, let me know.

Tutorial | English Local AI setup for DaVinci Resolve Studio 21.1 on M5 Ultra Mac Studio (Splash + Qwen3.8-27B + community MCP)

56 Upvotes

Disclaimer

This content describes a method for running a local large language model (LLM) on a Mac Studio in conjunction with DaVinci Resolve Studio version 21.1 or later. It is provided for informational purposes only and does not constitute a guarantee of suitability, performance, or fitness for any particular purpose. Nothing herein should be construed as a recommendation to purchase any specific hardware, including an M5 Ultra Mac Studio or any other model.

The author assumes no responsibility or liability for any decisions made based on this information, including any purchase of hardware, or for any resulting costs, performance shortfalls, or other consequences. Users are solely responsible for independently evaluating their own requirements and determining the adequacy of any hardware or software configuration for their intended use.

First off, it is important to call out a few specifics of my scripting and the use of Qwen3.8-27B through Inco AI's Splash engine.

  • Resolve 21.1’s MCP server is Studio-only and is configured inside the app (File > Setup AI Assistants), officially for Claude, Claude Code, and ChatGPT Codex.
  • It does not register as an MCP server in Claude Desktop / Cursor / Resolve.
  • It does not replace Resolve’s Neural Engine (Magic Mask, IntelliTrack, Super Scale).
  • Qwen3.8-27B (even Xhigh) is strong for its size but still trails the best cloud frontier models on complex reasoning, long-horizon planning, and nuanced creative judgment.
  • For very intricate editorial decisions or highly creative transform sequences, you may still want to fall back to a frontier model occasionally.
  • Native Resolve 21.1 MCP is more limited; the community server helps but is still a third-party layer that can break with Resolve updates.

NOTE: Because of the times you may find that you need more complex edits than Qwen3.8-27B can provide, I made sure to make the startup script a hybrid script. You can indicate with the flag of "cloud" if/when you wish to use a Claude subscription for editing.

Background and research

I recently purchased and received an M5 Ultra Mac Studio (base model: 96 GB unified memory, 30 CPU / 64 GPU cores, 1 TB SSD). My previous M1 Max with 64 GB was no longer keeping up with my workload, so I decided the new M5 Ultra base model should provide the performance I need for roughly as long as the M1 Max had served me.

With the additional performance—and the launch of native AI MCP support in DaVinci Resolve Studio 21.1 (currently 21.1.1)—I began experimenting with local models. I know I could subscribe to a cloud Claude account (which others have tested) and require less local memory, but I have sufficient RAM to run a local model and reduce reliance on an internet connection.

After research, I determined that the Qwen3.8-27B model (4-bit MLX quantization) fits comfortably in the system’s RAM while leaving enough headroom for DaVinci Resolve Studio to run well. Larger models are possible but would constrain Resolve’s available memory or require a higher-RAM configuration. For example, a 128 GB M5 Max would not provide enough headroom for both a larger model such as Qwen3.8-Flash-Next and Resolve, and jumping to a higher-RAM Ultra configuration exceeded my comfort level for operational spend.

Several inference engines are available. After evaluating options, Inco AI’s Splash engine appears to be the best match for my purposes. It has improved significantly during development and is currently at version 1.3.2 (at the time of my posting).

I perform a large number of Dynamic Zoom and Ken Burns-style pan transforms. Community MCP servers currently offer stronger support for these operations than the native Resolve MCP, so I am using one of them.

The two most useful community options at present are:

  • samuelgursky/davinci-resolve-mcp — most popular; strong compound tools and good transform + keyframe support
  • lordhoell/davinci-resolve-mcp — very complete (440+ tools), excellent Fusion and keyframe coverage

I chose the Samuel Gursky MCP. While Qwen3.8-27B can be used with Hermes and other MCP-aware setups, I selected Claude Code CLI. This should align most closely with existing tutorials that use cloud Claude for similar workflows.

Below is the installation script I developed with the assistance of generative AI, along with a companion launch script.

NOTE: In order to greatly improve TTFT, I've the SSD cache is set for 32GB and made it persistent (reloads the cache in the even of a system restart). Make sure to factor this in your space requirements.

Install Script

This version installs:

  1. Splash 1.3.2 + Qwen3.8-27B (Xhigh)
  2. Claude Code CLI
  3. The recommended community Resolve MCP server (samuelgursky)
  4. Configures Claude Code to use both the local Splash model and the community Resolve MCP

Save as `~/setup-splash-resolve.sh` and run:

Usage

Bash

~/stop-resolve-ai.sh

This will cleanly terminate the Splash server. It does not close DaVinci Resolve or Claude Code — those stay open so you can finish any work.

Happy to answer questions or share any follow-up results once I’ve put more hours on the setup.

If you encounter any errors with my scripts, please let me know so that I can correct those. I've copied and pasted, but it's possible I may have some errors.

Help DaVinci Resolve crashes on Color/Fusion/Fairlight pages (Edit page works fine) – RX 6600 + Ryzen 5 5600 + 16GB RAM

1 Upvotes

Hi everyone, I really need help with DaVinci Resolve on my new PC.

Problem:
Resolve works smooth on the Edit page, but when I switch to Color, Fusion, or Fairlight, it suddenly crashes (sometimes instantly, sometimes after a short time). After reopening Resolve again and again, those pages still crash and I can’t work.

My PC is perfect for gaming, so I don’t understand why Resolve is unstable.

PC Specs:

  • GPU: AMD RX 6600
  • CPU: Ryzen 5 5600
  • RAM: 16 GB
  • OS: Windows (please tell me if you need exact version)

What I already tried:

  • Changed different Resolve settings (including GPU settings)
  • Followed multiple YouTube tutorials
  • Updated/changed GPU settings and drivers (still no fix)
  • Downgraded Resolve version (same problem)

Why I’m asking:
I recently purchased this PC and I’m learning video editing to get a job, but I can’t work because Resolve keeps crashing. I also don’t have budget to replace the whole PC.

Questions:

  1. What could cause Resolve to crash only on Color/Fusion/Fairlight, while Edit works fine?
  2. Is this likely a GPU driver issue, RAM issue, or something else?
  3. If I must upgrade, what should I upgrade first: RAM, GPU, CPU, or do I need a different system?

If you need more info, tell me what to share and I’ll post it (Resolve version, GPU driver version, crash logs, etc.). Thanks a lot for any help.

Help | Beginner Workflow for a glorified slide show

1 Upvotes

I'm making a screen recording software walk through, probably 50 clips under 30 seconds each. I'd love a way to automatically split a video based on the image itself. For instance, if I record 50 different tasks all as one video, and I pause with a 3 second full white screen - can I split videos at each of those points? Maybe I'm asking a lot.

If alternatively I record 50 videos, what's the best way to get them into DR in a not completely manual way?

Help iPhone 16 plus footage - HDR enabled or not?

1 Upvotes

Hello,

I’ve downloaded the blackmagic camera app and my current settings are:

Codec H.265
Resolution 4K
Colour Space Rec.709
HDR Enabled

Using Davinchi v21 my colour management settings are
Colour science - Davinchi YRGB
Timeline colour space - Rec.709A
Output colour space - Rec.709A

(Using a MacBook Pro 2019)

My question is, should I be using HDR when shooting internal property videos, and what CST should I use?

Appreciate any help!

Help Dynamic zoom issue plz HELP!!

*Resolve 21.1 build 17 (Its been happening since Resolve 19) Updates haven't fixed it for me...

Read the bullet points in order and ask any questions...

  • Having an issue with Dynamic Zoom.
  • Dynamic Zoom itself still works.
  • When I click the Dynamic Zoom overlay, I can't adjust the frame normally.
  • The frame gets stuck and only stays in certain positions.
  • It won't move freely/reposition the way it used to.
  • Included a screenshot showing the issue.
  • Marked the areas where the frame gets stuck.
  • Wondering if anyone else has experienced this or knows a fix.
  • At start up of Davinci, the Dynamic Zoom works fine at first.
  • After I make changes to the clip and then come back, the Dynamic Zoom adjustability which are the green and red bug out and don't let me mess with them anymore
  • I can only toggle Dynamic Zoom on or off.

Thanks

Help | Beginner WHAT did i just download?

0 Upvotes

Hello all,

sony Vegas borris background. I downloaded the trial of resolve and can not dream of how to make the UI any more unusable and awkward?

Using GPT/gemini as a help. There is only dark mode? No text for icons? Have the menu stuff is at the bottom? half the top? As a newby, having so many menus in random order is insane.

What am i missing. I am sure it is worth it after ~100 hours of training but "ain't nobody got time for that"

Does the paid version clean this up? Do they want people to pay and use it?

I have started making YouTube videos/vlogs and made a video in my hometown in Turkey (I do live in Europe). But when walking in some areas, there are flickering lights and I do see this on the footage.

I have recorded in 4K/60. I have read this has to do with the 50 Hz lights in Turkey instead of 60 Hz?

I tried to use deflicker in the color menu/effects, but this doesn't help. I also tried to duplicate the footage, but also, no results...

I tried ChatGPT and Gemini for a solution, but I can't make it work. Does someone has the solution? I would really appreciate that! Thanks in advance.

Discussion Got tired of scrubbing 40-minute gaming VODs, so I scripted DaVinci to find and mark every kill automatically

Hi all,

Manually logging raw gaming VODs and scrubbing through an hour of footage just to find a handful of highlights is one of the most tedious parts of editing.

To speed up my assembly cut, I built a pipeline that connects an autonomous AI agent (**Antigravity**) directly to **DaVinci Resolve** via Resolve's scripting API.

Here is a 15-second silent demo showing how it works end-to-end:

In this clip, it scans a Lotus match, outputs the exact kill analysis table, marks the cuts, and jumps directly to a knife kill climax at 56.37s (Frame 3382).

Still polishing edge-case detection (assists vs. solo kills), but the time saved during initial logging is already huge.

Brutal honesty is welcome — I want to know if this is genuinely commercially viable before spending the next few months building a full UI and multi-game support.

Help Should i use Davinci Presets for Short Export?

Hi all,

I have the Studio 21 Version, and I do mainly short-form videos for YouTube, TikTok, and Facebook Reels as a hobbiest.

One of the main points I get headache about is, what export settings should i use?

I capture my screen in OBS in 2k and do Python Tutorials.

Now I build some export settings up after some research.

But I wonder if I have to build my own export settings or if I can trust the DaVinci export settings?

Do you use them? Do you trust them, or do you prefer your personal export settings?

Please feel free to share if so.
