I don't know if anyone else has been having the same issue as I have, but it feels like commuting to CSUF is a death trap around here. I live close to campus, but I drive on the sidewalk. I could technically ride on the road, but the cars here do NOT watch at all for you, neither do they watch for each other. I feel like if you want to commute to CSUF, the best and safest option is the sidewalk. I see other college kids ride their way over on scooters and bikes on the sidewalk too, but they don't look either which is kinda insane how trusting they are of the drivers here. I don't even see anyone wearing helmets. I cannot tell you the amount of times where i'm walking the crosswalk dismounted and almost got hit despite the pedestrian walk sign being on. Recently, somebody by the freeway ramp next to campus was hit on his bike using the crosswalk too.
It just feels like nobody looks around here, you're most likely to get hit by a car not looking versus riding accidentally making a misjudgment. I wish there were better bike infrastructures because even riding on the sidewalk is a huge risk for pedestrians and cyclists. You have to be extremely cautious riding as there are a lot of blind spots (driveways) cars tend to pull out on too when you're on the sidewalk.
Even using the two bike "lanes" on campus in the front aren't very helpful either since pedestrians use them as another walkway, but I don't blame them. The lane is literally just painted a faded red with some lines separating lanes, it looks part of the sidewalk. I know it's scary hearing wheels suddenly coming up behind you, so I tend to get off in front of the pedestrian zone-limit and just walk my bike to the racks. The campus does claim they have "bike paths" all across campus but they collide with the pedestrian zone limit and it's a process of getting off and getting back on again; it's not really helpful, theres not even any direction on where they are either, they just look like regular sidewalks full of other students. It would just be better to walk at that point.
I know recently we've been having an issue with e-scooters, but I just wish biking to CSUF wasn't as dangerous as it's been recently.
If you want my advice, if you're commuting in fullerton and value your safety, use the sidewalk and PLEASE look where you're going whenever making any kind of turn or using the crosswalk; THEY WILL NOT LOOK FOR YOU. It might suck you have to bother pedestrians you're coming up ahead and cars will pull out of driveways suddenly, but I'd rather deal with angry pedestrians and cars waiting by the driveway throwing their hands up when they see you (speaking from experience lol) than being drove off by cars not willing to share the road with you and risk being run over. Unless you have a lot more confidence on the road, just use the sidewalk. Don't even think about running any red lights or crossing a sidewalk without the pedestrian signal; that's just asking for it.
Please don't listen to those people online telling you to get on the road, at least if you know you can't handle it. Value your safety. Riding the sidewalk on a bike in fullerton is legal after all.
