My brand new car might be a write off :(
I’m honestly so sad about my car. I just bought my 2026 Honda Civic Sport Touring Hybrid in June, and it only had about 6,000 km on it when this happened. I absolutely loved this car and was so excited about it, so seeing it like this has been awful.
There was a three-car chain reaction accident in front of me. I had basically made it to a stop, but unfortunately made contact in the front with the hitch of the truck in front of me.
Then, while I was stopped from that collision, a Dodge Ram hit me hard from behind and pushed my Civic forward again, leaving me sandwiched between the two trucks. The Ram also ended up with a pretty significant dent in the front from hitting my car. So the whole accident ended up being a five-car chain reaction.
The rear of my Civic ended up pretty badly damaged.
Insurance is now sending it to an autobody shop, and their preliminary estimate is around $18,800 CAD in repairs. Their paperwork says the car is currently considered repairable up to about $31,500.
The estimate also says they aren’t ordering parts yet because the shop still needs to tear the vehicle down and properly inspect everything. So right now, they don’t really know the full extent of the damage or whether there’s additional hidden damage underneath.
I know nobody can say for sure from pictures, but I’m curious what people who work in autobody or insurance think. Does this look like something that will realistically be repaired, or is there a decent chance the cost goes up significantly once they start taking it apart?
As sad as I am about the car, part of me is kind of hoping it ends up being written off if the damage is extensive enough. I’ve heard from a lot of people that having a car repaired after this much damage can come with its own issues, and that honestly makes me nervous too. Mostly I just hate the idea of my basically brand new car never feeling quite the same again :(
