Rant Seated, ordered, and then asked to leave Daebak (+bonus personal attack in Google review reply from the owner)

Post image

This was the first time my girlfriend and I have ever been asked to leave a restaurant, much less after having already been seated and placing an order.

For context, my partner and I ordered three entrees, a side, and beer, which was already more than some of the BBQ "combo" prices ($90+).

I left a Google review explaining the situation, and Daebak's response is beyond what I could have expected - not even trying to address the situation or complaint, but attacking/insulting me for recommending an alternative KBBQ place across the street.

It's crazy to me that after a poor experience in the restaurant, they decided to double-down online. I also saw a similar response to a 1-star review where Daebak made a customer pay for a more expensive combo after accidently serving the wrong set.

An all-around interesting approach to customer service!

We visited the previous location in Chinatown quite a lot in the past, and always had good experiences there. But I feel like something changed when they opened the Wicker location (either new ownership or management) and there's a pretty obvious shift in attitude.

I still stand by my recommendation, as while Iron Age doesn't offer more of the traditional dishes, it sounds like I'm being forced to order BBQ anyway at Daebak? So may as well go with the cheaper AYC option that's always provided great customer service (and is now cleaner than ever!).

It was…fine. The pickle looked emaciated. But they earn bonus points for having fountain Cherry Coke, which is the nectar of the gods.

Review Del Sur bakery box was so good!

Post image

My husband scored a bakery box from Del Sur for this morning and it was awesome. The only thing I didn't love was the savory croissant but that's because I'm more of a sweet person. My husband who always gets the savory option was blown away. It was filled with longganisa sausage and topped with grated cured yolk and a soy based sauce. I liked it but it just wasn't my favorite.

The rectangle was a banana danish that was probably my favorite. The green and orange one was a dense cake with pistachio cream and passion fruit curd, also amazing with coffee. The muffin shaped thing was croissant pastry with lemon curd. My son went insane for that one. Anyway, everything was so good. Highly recommend. We haven't eaten the cookies yet but expect they will be just as amazing.

Review Brunch at Spice by CMB Was Outstanding

My title says it all.
From service to vibes to hospitality to the incredibly delicious food, it's a new favorite.

App - Date Glazed Sweet Potatoes - perfectly soft, with a slightly crunchy exterior layered with the sweetness of the dates, the creaminess of the avocado mousse, and the savory chimichurri. From the first bite of this dish we knew we chose right for brunch.

Mains - Shakshuka - lovely and spiced with a perfectly poached egg (incredible eggs with tangerine colored yolks)

House Smoked Salmon Potato Pancake - I already want to eat this again. Giant, crispy potato pancake with the smoked salmon and all other ingredients layered atop, with another excellent poached egg and hollandaise sauce on the side.

Dessert - Peach Cobbler with Ice Cream - fabulous

The hostess and server recommended the rum cake with the coconut ice cream. After we polished off the cobbler, they dropped one on the table for us.

With dining out costs being high, it's unusual for us to do three courses, or if we do, we split the entree, but the food was so good, the service so attentive, and our mood so happy we splurged and were glad we did.

Happy hour menu looks good. I don't see it on their site, but they definitely have one with some of their regular menu items at a discount. We'll definitely go back to try out Happy Hour/Dinner

Sorry for not taking any pictures.

I also thought that this time, maybe the jalapenos wouldn't wreck me. I was very wrong lol. They're not afraid of spice!

Anyway, I'm going to reheat the leftovers in a cast iron and they will be amazing.

Question ISO gas stations with hot food/hot boxes

i come from the south where about half of the gas stations have a hot box filled with sausage, biscuits, hash browns and other greasy breakfast food in the morning and fried chicken, cornbread, and collard greens in the evening. i haven't really come across any hot boxes in chicago and was wondering if there's any around.
suggestions? answers? and please do not judge me for craving food from a gas station. there's really no way to explain the perfection of a chicken and biscuit and canned coffee on the way to work hungover. it heals.

Question Something so simple is so hard to find.

Hello Chicago friends,

I am on a quest to find pea shoots in our fair city. I’ve tried H-Mart, Joong Boo Market and Seafood City supermarket.
When I lived on the west coast I used to grill swordfish and make a ponzu dressed pea shoot salad on top of the fish. I’d like to make it again now that I’m back home. I’m not sure where else to look. Substitution ideas would be appreciated too.

Review Great Experiences at Void and Txa Txa Club

Great weekend of eating in Logan/Avondale. I didn’t get any photos.

First time at Void. Service was great and friendly, food amazing. We had the focaccia, wedge, steak, and the Japanese sweet potato pasta. All were stand outs and perfectly seasoned.

Txa Txa Club I have been to many times, it’s probably my favorite casual restaurant right now. We had our usual slate of the cold noodles, pimento cheese, breakfast sandwich, and corn cake. The corn cake is my favorite pastry in town.

Thanks in advance.

I'm watching my friend's 10 yo kid later this week. I'm neither a kid or a parent. He's cool likes instant ramen and vegan chicken nuggets. The parents are flexitarians so he's not the best with meat on the bone.

Mom said she'll pay for delivery. In NW Avondale. I want something fun. Their family has been through a lot. Any dilun ideas to live up to my guncle image?

Known values:

Restrictions: 100% dairy free

Likes: dairy free cheese stuff, veg and chicken nuggets, spicy instant ramen, FIFA, magic the gathering

I'm at a loss.

Reservation Maxwell Trading reservation cancellation policy?

Hi all! I messed up and booked the wrong date for my group dinner this upcoming weekend. Does anyone know if they are flexible with their cancellation policy OR is anyone interested in the reservation? I paid $240 deposit that gets applied to your bill ($40/person) and am now in a pickle.

Review El Milagro - Pilsen

Post image
211 Upvotes

I was in Pilsen checking out the Open House Chicago sites, and I got hungry.

I decided to stop by El Milagro on Blue Island for lunch, and I was hoping to dine in. Unfortunately, it was packed, and they were only taking orders to go. However, I have eaten here a bunch of times and walked home with my food.

I ordered a plato de asada with rice, beans, and tortillas de maíz. If you want, you can pick tortillas de harina, but I prefer tortillas de maíz when eating out. I have yet to find a place in Chicago that makes tortillas de arena as good as my grandmother's.

I also ordered una torta de asada, which comes con carne asada, crema, aguacate, queso, lechuga, beans, and tomato

The carne asada in the plato de asada and the torta does not come finely chopped, as is commonly found in most taquerias. The asada in the plato comes whole, whereas the asada in the torta comes cut into long strips.

Personally, I prefer the carne asada not to come chopped up and like to be able to cut up the meat to put in the tortilla. However, in a torta I would prefer to have the meat chopped up more, as it is easier to eat without it spilling out of the bread (or spitting the bread). Overall, the carne asada is well marinated, tender, and some pieces have a nice char on the edges

In the bag, they included 4 salsas that are pico de gallo-like. It's made with tomato (blended in a blender), garlic, and cilantro. The tomato makes the salsa pretty watery compared to a salsa roja or verde. Overall, the salsa was good; it doesn't compete with the food you're eating and is not spicy. So, if you like a mild salsa, this is for you.I like a less watery salsa, and I wish they threw a jalapeno (with the seeds) or two in their salsa to make it more spicy.

If you dine in, they have different salsas available, and you can pick whatever you want. Personally, I am a salsa verde kind of person. I probably should have asked for it, but they were slammed, I was hungry, and I forgot to ask for a different salsa.

The dining room on the inside has plenty of tables, but it does get busy during the lunch rush. There are only high-top tables you can eat at if there are no open seated tables.

Overall, El Milagro is a place where you can come in and get good food at a reasonable price.

If you're still hungry, head to La Michoacana for ice cream. Or go to Don Churro if you want the best churro you have ever eaten (in my opinion).

Edit: I misspelled tortillas de harina, and I corrected the mistake.

Specific Request Help me satisfy a craving - where is the best refried bean dip/nachos in Chicago?

No frills required. I’m talking about the no-nonsense thin to creamy plain bean dip you get as an appetizer. Central Chicago focus but willing to travel.

Question Visiting Chicago from NYC for the first time, looking for one more lunch spot

Over our trip, we will have done:

  • 5 Rabanitos
  • Akahoshi Ramen
  • Al's (Taylor)
  • Dave's Luncheonette
  • Elske
  • Kasama (Breakfast)
  • Monteverde
  • Pequod's
  • Uncle Mike's

We're looking for 1 more food spot, preferably some kind of institutional food that we can't really experience as well in NYC.

Question Waited too long to reserve at Ciccio Mio for anniversary, looking for other recs

My husband and I are visiting Chicago in early November for our 10 year anniversary. Originally we wanted to go to Bavette's for our anniversary dinner but it's closed while we're there Then we chose Ciccio Mio, but when I tried to reserve it was too early to do so, so I set a calendar reminder for the day they went live . . . but I set it on my work calendar stupidly and then was out that day. I just remembered and it's only been 3 days but all the reservations are already gone :( I'm very bummed!

In the meantime I've reserved The Izakaya, which we were planning on doing for my birthday, but obviously that's a very different vibe, so I thought I'd see if anyone had any other suggestions that might have a chance of still having a reservation.

We are open to a lot of different types of food, and while we want the food to be good the ambiance is most important for this occasion. We like it to feel eclectic and/or romantic. For example I rejected several places because while the food sounds spectacular it's just not the romantic vibe I'm going for this night (some of the places that are highly recommended but just don't fit our style include Monteverde and the Girl and the Goat).

Thanks in advance!

Review Pretty disappointing experience at Le Sud in Roscoe Village

Post image
110 Upvotes

Went to Le Sud the other night with three friends, and honestly, I can’t remember the last time I felt so unwelcome at a restaurant.
I’ve worked in hospitality, have friends who own restaurants, and appreciate good food and service. But the staff here acted like we were inconveniencing them just by showing up. Snooty, dismissive, and seemingly bothered that they had to do their jobs.
We asked to sit outside, and the guy rolled his eyes. At one point, my friend actually had to ask him if he was okay because his attitude was so noticeably bad. He proceeded to complain about how long his day had been and how their ice delivery was late. Look, I’ve worked in hospitality. I understand that shit goes wrong and some days suck. But if you’re managing a restaurant, dealing with those problems is literally your job. Customers are paying to enjoy themselves, not to hear about how difficult your shift has been.
And the food? Completely underwhelming. Bland, uninspired, and nowhere near worth what they were charging. Honestly, the highlight of the meal was probably the bottle of rosé, which I don’t even drink. So at least my friends got to enjoy something.
The one genuinely bright spot of the experience was our server, Ava, who could not have been nicer. She was fantastic, friendly, attentive, and actually made us feel welcome. She deserves recognition because, unfortunately, she seemed to be the exception rather than the rule that night.
I have no problem paying good money for a nice dinner, but at those prices, I expect decent food and basic hospitality.
Chicago has WAY too many incredible restaurants with talented chefs and hardworking staff to waste money somewhere that makes you feel like you don’t belong.
Somewhere along the line, being too cool to do your job became acceptable, and this place seems to have perfected it.
The problem wasn’t that this restaurant thought it was better than us. The problem was that it thought it was better than it actually was.

Question Late night group dining recommendations

Hello! I have a some family members coming from out of town and I want to take them out somewhere to eat. They won’t be arriving till 9 so my options are limited because a lot of restaurants closed at that time. I already have some in mind like MinHin, MAAX asian BBQ & hotpot and Chi cafe, but if anyone has any recommendations, please let me know.
