This year alone, we had two movies based on popular Capcom video game franchises, released mere months apart and with two very different approaches to adaptation.
The first was Resident Evil, in which director Zach Creggar took the iconic horror franchise and put his own spin on it. He deliberately opted not to adapt any of the games directly, with no recognizable fan favorite characters, locations, or pre-established monsters. Outside of minor visual easter eggs and the basic overall concepts of Umbrella Corp and Raccoon City, you would hardly tell at first glance if it was Resident Evil. And yet, the movie we got was a thrilling, tension-filled, horror rollercoaster with critical and audience praise and a huge box office turn-out.
Then we have Street Fighter, which filled itself to the brim with everything Street Fighter…many iconic fighters were in this movie, there were flashy special moves, the costuming was on point…it was a movie clearly made to be eye candy for the Street Fighter fan. But the plot was disjointed, the pacing way off, the whole thing was over-bloated…to the point that the movie just stops with no real resolution.
So you have two extremes…one movie put a lot of focus in trying to make a compelling and well crafted film with creativity and ingenuity at the expense of big fan-service, the other a visual feast for the fans but at the cost of an opportunity for a truly great film.
I hope someday we get a studio or creative team that could try to aim for both. A movie that doesn’t have to sacrifice fan-service to make a great film, while also balancing itself out to ensure the fan-service doesn’t overpower.
EDIT: A lot of the comments here are kind of proving my point. So many of you are rooting for Street Fighter and it looks like it’s mainly due to how heavy in the fan-service it was, while Resident Evil is brushed aside since there wasn’t enough of the game in it.
I didn’t make this post to try and make a convincing argument one was definitively better than the other and that people who liked Street Fighter are wrong…I just wanted to point out this interesting contradiction and try to argue that we need someone who can balance out making a good quality movie while still doing more to honor the original source material.

I recently interviewed legendary costume designer Kym Barrett, known for her work on The Matrix, Romeo + Juliet, and Shang-Chi, about her work on the new live-action Street Fighter film.
We discussed the challenges of translating some of gaming’s most recognizable character designs to the big screen.
As a designer, I was particularly interested in how she approached characters that fans have known and loved for decades.
Curious to hear what everyone thinks of the film’s costume designs!
Thanks to the mods for allowing me to share!

Is it bad that I wish that there was a Capcom Arcade Classic that had a good friendly dragon? I'm asking because in almost every Capcom Arcade Classic that featured a fantasy setting (E.G, Magic Sword, King Of Dragons, Black Tiger, etc), almost every dragon is evil.
