Looking to meet new people? Come to the r/Brum meet up!
Hi everyone, my name is Karl and after seeing a bunch of posts from people looking to make new friends, I thought we could organise a meet up like they used to back in the day!
I'm going to propose a date of either Saturday 14th or Sunday 15th November, which gives us around a month to organise. I assume a venue in the city centre will be convenient for most...
Please comment which day you prefer and if you have a suggestion or preference for a venue (I'm aware not all cultures like to be around alcohol) or maybe you run/have links to a venue that would host us.
After a couple of weeks for people to see this and weigh in, I'll start to make suitable arrangements!

Megathread Photography Megathread!
Gonna start showing off some local photography in the subreddit sidebar! Anyone looking on desktop will see it, and you can see just by tapping See More on mobile.
Please reply with your best local photography. As a pretty large sub, more than happy to show off your best photos as far as Warwick, Stafford, and Worcester! Caption them with where it was, when it was, if it was an event then tell us all about it, maybe an aerial shot from a plane then what route/airline was the flight?
Any AI photos or stolen photos (each one will be checked) will be ignored and/or removed.
This thread isn't where absolutely all photography should go. If you've been on a day out and want to share where you've been, by all means, make your own post.

What's with all the water for sale at Bob shops?
As well as all the beach balls there is often a wall of Costco water outside Bob shops, what's the reason for this? Is it something cheap with a large mark up that is easy to cycle for money laundering?

If Brum place names were characters in a drama...
If places in Birmingham were being cast as fictional characters in a drama based purely on the place name, what characters do you envisage them being:
Here's a couple that we initially thought of:
'Handsworth' - a gropey uncle type. Everyone knows him to be a 'bit of a menace' but don't want to cause a fuss. Occasionally he is seen sporting an unexplained black eye.
'Moseley' - a nefarious conman with a moustache
'Perry Barr' - an snooty barrister. Possibly corrupt.
'Acocks Green' - a police detective. Drives a vintage car. Has an alcohol dependancy and a cool jacket.

Question How are we handling the extra waste we’re accumulating with the no recycling pick ups?
Hi all,
I seem to have an endless supply of cardboard boxes and bottles around my house, and I’m thinking, I can’t be the only one.
How are you guys dealing with it? Are you booking regular tip runs?

Question large soft toys/plushies in Brum?
Hi all,
I'm an enthusiast looking to expand my collection, but no idea where to go locally. Most of the chain stores have tiny plush and/or terrible quality. Is there anywhere good out there left?
Thanks

Question Cheap food options near Dudley/Kingswinford
I'll be coming to Dudley and Kingswinford next week and will be staying in Travelodges and Premier Inns while I'm there.
What cheap but healthy food options do I have for finding food? Nothing too spicy please! Is there anywhere that would do a good jacket potato in the evening for example?

Question does brum have a queer scene?
i’ve lived in birmingham all my life but haven’t noticed any particular events or queer areas beyond pride and the gay village which seems to be all bars. i don’t do well in the bars because as a pakistani girl i don’t really blend in and i often feel left out
i feel like a lot of brummies are just very homophobic (likely the people i’m surrounded by) and it really upsets me. i just really feel like i’m lacking community and would love to meet people. i’m thinking coffee morning/book club kind of vibes but queer based because i’m a lesbian. any suggestions would be appreciated!

Question Hot & Cold Carepackage if anyone could help me please
Hi ive fallen on hard times and currently dont have a support network around me as im living in a supported HMO which restricts any form of income.
I was wondering if theres anyone kind enough to arrange a carepackage for me.
Ideally tinned /long life meals and possibly a hot meal to keep me going for today would really be appreciated. Im currently low on the basic essentials like shower gel and toothpaste. Ive attempted to contact local foodbank but really struggling to get hold of anyone for today
Im currently really low on food as my UC hasnt been enough to cover my basic needs this month due to travelling for an interview quite far out.
Honestly would really appreciate any help rn

Panorama on ‘Supported’ Housing in Brum TONIGHT
The supported exempt accommodation sector is rampant with fraud, exploitation and profiteering.
20% of the country’s most vulnerable tenants are in Birmingham.
We are the epicentre of this crisis - and neighbourhoods like Winson Green, Handsworth and Erdington are at the centre of this crisis.
Tonight, Panorama on BBC1 at 8pm exposes the scale of the sector in our city.
Me and my colleague Cllr Bernasconi have been speaking up about this for years. Now, we’re happy it’s getting national coverage.

Question Any orchards/farms near Birmingham where I can get cider Apples?
I recently got into cider making. Turns out I'm actually pretty good at it and I've started scaling up production to 30 litres a batch. Now I need a supply of apples to match.
I live in Oldbury close to Birmingham and I'm looking for local orchards or farms within reasonable driving distance that will sell cider apples by the box.
Fortunately I love a good old fashioned scrumpy so I'm not fussed about what specific apples I can get. Just the idea of making fresh cider from local apples is super appealing and I want to get my hands on some!
I've not had much luck browsing online. But then I imagine these types of businesses rely on local custom.
If anyone has any leads that would be super helpful!

Hi everyone, as of 30 minutes ago, my agency’s assignment was terminated. I can get into the details if interested but that’s not why i’m here.
I need your guys’ help to find another job as soon as possible as i am here on my own, no family or anywhere else to go. I need the job start date as soon as possible as bills and rent need paying. Preferably with weekly pay. If not bills and rent can be sorted out, no problem with some favours to ask.
Please please please, send anything you have my way. I am a software engineer, have plenty of experience in customer service roles such as barista, sandwich artist, call handler etc. also worked in warehouses before, ASSA ABLOY security systems installer and also have EXTENSIVE IT skills when it comes to hardware and software troubleshooting. ANYTHING will do, this is a cry for help. Thank you

Commuting via New Street
For least stressful/busy travelling and avoiding delays. If you had to work in Broad Street for 7hrs per day during office hours-ish and travelling into Brum by train via New Street - which hours would you choose?
Is it better to get in early and work 8-3 or wait and do 10-5?
Thanks for any tips

Just shows drivers don’t read signs in Birmingham
Let’s set the scene it’s 10:15pm the Aston expressway is closed in and out of the city. The only way is the Lichfield road. Every driver is sat in the right hand lane causing tail backs. I passed every car and even a few police cars using the bus lane because I can after 7pm. How do people get a license?

Bonfires without fireworks?
Might be a longshot and/or a silly question, but does anyone know of any bonfire night events that just have the bonfire without the fireworks?

Question Any advice on stretching out socially in Brum?
I’m a yank who’s lived up north for several years - relocated to this lovely place not long ago. I’m simply enamored, especially after reading the city’s history in your museum downtown.
Outside of the MeetUp app, any ideas on how to find special interest groups, casual get togethers, and cultural goings on?
Bonus points if you can point towards any communities with other Americans too. We have Thanksgiving coming up in late November, and I’m so home sick.
Love what y’all have done with the place! <3

Question Volunteering - where to get involved?
I want to start volunteering. I care about many different areas deeply so I would want to get involved wherever possible, and because I am open to most organisations, I was wondering if anyone knows any specific charities that are in need of more support?
I can focus my attention to applying there as a priority. Thanks in advance!
