Suggest 2 entry level-wargame board games to purchase. Little Soldiers, General Orders WW2, Blitzkrieg!, Caesar!, Memoir 44, Undaunted Normandy.

I'm leaning towards Little Soldiers and General Orders WW2. I love that Little Soldiers has a lot of reflexibility on how you placed your miniatures and you can add random stuff as part of your battlefield, though its a bit too family friendly, so the second game I would get is General Orders WW2. Is this a good combo?

Or should I just go all in with Memoir 44 and forget the rest?

What's your opinion? Is there any other entry level wargame board game that I should look into?

Thanks guys!

Do free browser versions of physical games make you more or less likely to buy the box?

Curious how you all feel about this.

Some designers put a free, playable web version of their game online before or alongside the physical release. No account, just open it and play against the computer.

On paper it sounds great: you can try the core loop before spending money, and it's easy to show a friend. But I can also see the other side. If the web version is good enough, why buy the box? And a browser game against an AI never really feels like sitting across from someone, so maybe it undersells the game.

So:

- Has a web or digital version ever convinced you to buy a physical game? Or talked you out of it?

- Does it matter if it's the full game or just a light version?

- Would you rather have it before the release or only after you own the box?

I'm a small designer myself and I'm trying to figure out whether this actually helps or hurts. Interested in honest takes either way.

Crowdsourcing Wavelength, but asynchronous, inside a Reddit post

Post image
1 Upvotes

Wavelength is one of my favorite party/board games, but it's not always easy to get a group together to play. So I built a version that works directly within Reddit, where people can drop in whenever they're free: r/InSync.

Would love feedback from folks here, especially on whether the game even works in this format.

My father’s work app is not supported and they put the files online.

So i thought my father’s work would work well as a Discord bot. It allows you to play one of the three scenarios

Let me know what you think

Crowdsourcing Serious Privacy: The Data Game

Thumbnail kickstarter.com
2 Upvotes

My boyfriend has launched a game on Kickstarter and completely lacks socials as both his work and the game are about online data privacy! Not a great situation for a launch so I'm hoping to help out since like him I'm a huge fan of board games xD

Serious Privacy: The Data Game is a coop game where players take on societal roles (each with their own ability) to try and balance different business districts to utilise data for the betterment of humanity (and win the game) while avoiding cascading harms to society.

Gameplaywise it has elements familiar to Shadows over Camelot but differs greatly due to an event deck that truly mixes things up providing an all too tempting approach. Can you resist that temptation to more focus your group efforts?

Each card also contains information regarding modern data privacy and concerns, written by the creator - an expert on the field. While not required to play the game, these elements provide a fascinating insight into data protection and its effect on modern life.

Crowdsourcing I wanted a better way to remember my board game nights, so I built an app

What do you use to keep a record of the board games you’ve played?

* BGG?
* Spreadsheet?
* Photos only?
* Notebook?
* Nothing at all, just in your heart?

Until now, I’ve only kept photos.

It wasn’t really about keeping track of scores or win rates. I just took photos of the games I played and the friends I played with.

However, this year, I wanted to keep track of who I played with, what board games we played, and the photos from each game night, so I built a small iPhone app called BoardLog.

The idea is simple: rather than focusing on scores and statistics, BoardLog is about preserving the memories of board game nights.

You can record the games you played and who you played with, add photos, and look back on your past game nights later.

I wanted it to feel less like a game tracker and more like a personal scrapbook.

It’s currently available on the US and Japanese App Stores.

I’d love to hear how you keep your board game memories! Do you take photos, keep game logs, use an app, or simply rely on your memory?

If you’re interested, feel free to check out BoardLog!

We’re curious what people here actually care about when choosing a gaming table.

If you could only pick 3 features, what would they be?

  1. Comfortable height
  2. More legroom
  3. Large playing surface
  4. Expandable settings
  5. Cup holders
  6. Player trays
  7. Storage
  8. Easy cleanup
  9. Light strips
  10. Something else?

We’re working on a new table and would rather hear from actual players than guess what people want.

What’s the one feature you wouldn’t want to live without?

Deep regrets boardgame - rule clarification

I just got deep regrets and i love the art and gameplay but i think I’m playing it wrong.

For the fish action, is it only one fish catch per turn or are you able to catch multiple times based on the amount of fresh dice that you have?

Show off your board game shelf! What’s your favorite?

I wanna see your board game shelf!

Show off your collection and tell me which game is your favorite.

Here’s mine, by the way. My #1 favorite is Carcassonne.
My wife and I play it together pretty often, and it’s probably the game we come back to the most.

Now show me yours. What’s the game on your shelf that you love the most?

Crowdsourcing Piment Dice update — 3 weeks after launch, 50+ players and counting

Hey everyone,

Posted here about 3 weeks ago after Piment Dice properly launched, quick update since then: over 50 people have installed it, and there are now real games happening between players without me involved, which has honestly been the best part of this whole thing.

Also wanted to actually share a clip this time, since I only had a screenshot in my last post:

The core mechanic: dice sometimes land on a red face, keep them for double points, or turn them for a safer value but lose the double. Bonus if all 6 dice show the same value in one roll.

Free to play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.pimentdice.app

Still happy to hear from anyone into Yahtzee-style games!

Cosy birthday boardgame day tomorrow, last minute suggestions

My little group of boardgamers (4 in total) have been gathering every week for the past 2 months to play some games. We are having a longer session tomorrow on the account of my birthday (who could think of a better way to spend your birthday?!) and I want to treat myself to a new game. I’ve read countless posts on this sub for recommendations but I was hoping I could chat to a few of you specifically about recommendations based on the games we already play and what is good for 4 people — and that I can also go out today to buy or order for next day delivery! I’ve left it late…

We usually play:

  • Catan (no expansions)
  • Splendor
  • Wyrmspan (I’ve found this quite long and would like more games where we interact so I’d like to avoid the spans tomorrow)
  • We have the 7 Wonders/LOTR Duels but not the 4 player version, which is something I’m considering.
  • Carcassonne

I am currently thinking about:

  • Ticket to ride Europe
  • 7 wonders
  • pandemic
  • brass Birmingham
  • scythe

We are open to trying new things and we definitely don’t mind watching through rule videos before we meet up.

Thanks :)

My wife loves Carcassonne, but isn’t really into board games — recommendations?

My wife isn’t really into board games, but she got really into Carcassonne!

We’re going glamping with another couple soon, and I’m looking for some board games that the four of us might enjoy.

Ideally something that’s:
・Good with 4 players
・Easy to learn
・Not too competitive or confrontational
・Around 30–60 minutes

Any recommendations?

2 Player Strategic Game

My boyfriend and I really love playing Marabunta, however, sometimes it’s just tooo stressful because we are both playing through every possibility in our heads (we both love logic and are super strategic - but super slow at it). And the game isn’t as fun if we use a timer. This is good for weekends, but not for a quick mid week game.

Sooo I’d love for a game slightly ‘easier’ than Marabunta that we could play. Preferably with very few pieces (if any). So we can play on lazy nights.

I am located in Germany so needs to be something I could order online (or get in store) and I would like something under 40 euros!

Been looking forward to getting SETI to the table, have to admit the game looks visually amazing :) though I was very worried about having enough room to fit everything. Think I’m about sorted with the rules enough for my first game :)

Immersive boardgame suggestions

I really like games like Betrayal and Fallout because although the reviews say that they suck because its unbalanced and non competitive, our family doesn’t really care about those things. We just like games that’s rich with roleplay potential and story. Sidenote: I am also a DnD player so unpredictability and chaos is completely fine with me. Regardless if i win or lose, a good story gives good memories 👌🏻

TLDR:

Looking for boardgames with

\- high replayability

\- high potential for roleplay

\- great stories

GameSquire's public beta just went live everywhere

Thumbnail gallery
5 Upvotes

I'm building GameSquire, a collection tracker that answers the constant "what should we play tonight" debate by filtering your shelf by mood instead of scrolling past the same wall of boxes. Just opened the beta on every platform:

- iOS via TestFlight: https://testflight.apple.com/join/hsn8DtNQ?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=new_post

- Android via Google Play open testing: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.squirebuilds.tabletracker

Web, no install needed: https://beta.gamesquire.app/?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=new_post

What it does:
- Imports your BoardGameGeek collection so you're not re-adding a few hundred games by hand
- Filters by mood (Quick Fix, Deep Dive, Date Night, Family Table)
- Shared household shelf if a few of you own overlapping games
- Create a group to combine shelves and filter those
- Logs plays so you can see what's actually getting played versus what's just sitting there

Free core features forever without ads and no tracking.

All feedback is welcome, especially from anyone who hosts regularly.

Crowdsourcing What if a dating show was actually a social deduction game?

Post image
0 Upvotes

Imagine you’re three rounds into a social deduction game.

You’ve found someone you actually like.

You’ve gone on a couple of dates.

They keep choosing you.

You keep choosing them.

For once, things feel… suspiciously stable.

Then someone at the table draws:

TRIANGLE.

They look at you.

Then at your partner.

And say:

“I’m going after them.”

Well.

So much for stability.

That’s basically what we wanted Drama Cards to do in LOVE VILLA.

Not:

“Lose 2 points.”

Not:

“Skip your turn.”

But:

“Okay. Now deal with THIS.”

Some cards let you walk straight into someone else’s relationship.

TRIANGLE

Some let you put information into the room and watch everyone start questioning each other.

RUMOR

Some are less subtle.

STEAL THE DATE

Someone has a date planned?

Cool.

Take their person.

Now explain yourself.

Then there’s:

PUBLIC QUESTION

Pick someone.

Ask the question in front of the whole Villa.

They can tell the truth.

They can lie.

They can give you half the truth.

But now everyone has heard the answer.

Or maybe you draw:

SWITCH

You thought two people were getting a little too comfortable?

Not anymore.

And then there’s probably my favorite because it’s so simple:

REJECTION.

Someone invites you.

You say no.

Publicly.

That’s it.

But now everyone at the table is thinking:

Wait… why did they reject them?

Do they like someone else?

Was their relationship fake?

Are they trying to complete their secret mission?

And suddenly a two-second decision becomes everyone's business.

That’s the idea behind the whole system.

Drama Cards don’t create random punishment.

They create social situations.

The card lights the match.

The players decide where to throw it.

And because everyone in LOVE VILLA has a Secret Identity and hidden motive, causing chaos isn’t always just causing chaos.

Maybe I stole your date because I actually wanted them.

Maybe I started that rumor because I don’t trust you.

Maybe I rejected you because I figured out your identity.

Maybe breaking you two apart is exactly what I need to win.

Or…

maybe I’m just being messy.

So now I’m curious:

You’re in the Villa and you get ONE Drama Card.

What are you doing?

Are you starting a TRIANGLE and going after someone who’s already taken?

Are you dropping a RUMOR just to see who panics?

Are you STEALING someone’s date because you actually want them?

Or are you keeping your head down, protecting your own relationship, and waiting for everyone else to destroy each other?

Would you use your Drama Card to create chaos… or to fight for something you actually want?

Something like Cardia for more than 2 players

I find Cardia absolutely great. It’s small. It’s fast. It’s puzzly. Every turn, there are twists and turns. That makes it so much fun.
Downside: it’s only for two players.
So my question is: do you know of any similar games like Cardia for more than two players?
Thanks a lot for your feedback.
