Hi, Reddit! I’m David Sims, a staff writer at The Atlantic, where I work primarily as a film critic. I’m here today to answer questions about movies, the state of the film industry, and my new weekly newsletter, Video Village. Ask me anything!
Hey, r/blankies!
For the past 12 years, I (David Sims) have written about films at The Atlantic. I’ve interviewed renowned directors such as Ryan Coogler (“Sinners”) and Benny Safdie (“The Smashing Machine”) and explored big happenings in the film industry, including the potential Netflix–Warner Bros. Discovery merger and the effect of Donald Trump’s tariffs on big movie productions. I’ve also given you lists of recommendations, such as the best movies to watch during the summer and the top-10 movies of 2025.
This month, I launched my newsletter, Video Village. Every Thursday, I plan on bringing criticism, recommendations, and commentary about the world of film straight to your inbox. In the first edition, out last week, I listed movies that have defined this decade so far—and explored what these titles tell us about how Hollywood is operating today.
Let’s talk movies. Ask me anything!

The Coen Brothers hint at a new collaboration in the near future and reject reports of a schism.
Joel: "We were both interested in exploring different things but after 40 years together there are plenty of times where we miss each other's point of view. We’re getting old. It better be in the near future. We have a number of different things in what we call the library, things that we’ve written before. And then other things that we’ve thought about writing scripts about and never gotten around."
Ethan: "Mainstream movies are now mostly fantasy, science fiction, horror, comic books, all different kinds of fantasy. It’s a sad thing for us because we’ve never been drawn to those kinds of things."

What’s going on with Taika Waititi? Seems to be on a real cold streak right now.

Surprised to see them covering the Goodfeathers, but I'm excited!
It's one of Martin Scorsese's more offbeat projects, but the animation is really good for TV.

If you have a chance to see The Devils in theaters...
...Take it.
I just got back a bit ago from seeing the new restoration, and man, it looks incredible. It's an amazing film and will still be worth seeing when it (hopefully) gets a home release, but seeing it on the big screen blew me away after years of just seeing it on the BFI DVD. The costumes, art direction, and cinematography really get a chance to shine. Not in any sort of revisionist, "modern" look way - it's faithful to when it was released.
Plus, just a chance to see any of Ken Russell's particular brand of insanity in theaters is definitely worth it.

Primetime was black comedy at its finest
Allow me to add a Primetime thread onto the pile. I recently watched this movie and it has become my favourite of the year.
I was reminded of a reddit comment while watching it. Several weeks back someone commented that they had to leave their cinema in the middle of the movie because a bunch of guys kept laughing, which ruined the experience for them.
I'm sorry random redditor, but I also laughed my head off throughout this movie. It's a fucking black comedy! It's absurd! And the direction and performances are intentionally crafted to make you laugh uncomfortably at how fucking weird the premise of it all is.
I'm not American, and I never watched the show, so I only know of Chris Hansen through the many memes that appeared online in the 2000s, so the fact that this show was real and very popular has always remained a surreal thing to me. Maybe the movie hits different for me than someone who did actually watch the show, I don't know.
But yeah, the movie was darkly funny, and it made the actual serious moments hit that much harder when they happen, like Decoy Dan's first performance, or his disquieting look when he rewatched it again with people.
The laughs outnumber the gravitas though, so many highlights of lunacy. I especially liked Chris dragging his sleepy kids to the living room to watch his fucked up TV show. Also, fellow hit TV show Lost being treated like Chris's main antagonist was, you guessed it: fucking hilarious.
The performances were naturally great, but what great direction, to approach this material the way Lance Oppenheim did is a stroke of genius. I'm always a fan of movies or TV shows that approach biopics or true events with style and atmosphere.

Anyone seen Crystal Lake in its entirely yet?
Please post non-spoilery opinions.
And does it have a satisfactory ending? Let’s imagine there’s no S2, would it work as a standalone miniseries?
