What did you listen to this week – October 17, 2026? Please share!

So did you listen to anything good this week? Or something so truly terrible you want to warn other listeners?

Please include the following information: Author, Title and Narrator.

Why does identifying the Narrator matter?

Often books will be recorded with different narrators for different regions (ie. Harry Potter was read by both Jim Dale and Stephen Fry) or produced by different publishers (ie... Elizabeth Moon's books were produced by both Graphic Audio and Tantor). It is extremely helpful to other listeners to know what version you are sharing to avoid confusion.

Links to a source are welcomed and encouraged!

Overdrive, Audible, Downpour, Librivox, etc... It doesn't matter the source, as long as the Author, Title and Narrator are easily identified.

Question High Fantasy With Real World Provincial Accents

• Upvotes

Currently listening to: The Weapon Takers Omnibus Audiobook by Jamie Edmundson narrated by Greg Patmore and Bridget Thomas. They use a variety of accents for characters from different 'in-world' regions including: neutral British, Yorkshire, Liverpudlian, Lancashire, Cornish, Cockney, Northern English, West Country, Scottish, Welsh, Northern Irish, Irish, and Scandinavian accents. I'm wondering if there are any High Fantasy, Sci-f epics where the narrators use a similar method but utilize an array of American provincial accents? TIA.

Question Question about the Audiobooks

• Upvotes

When I read a physical book my brain won’t completely focus on exclusively the book, so when I read the physical book I listen along with the audiobook. What are the best versions of the audiobooks for The Wizard of Oz books for each book? Thanks in advance to everyone 😊

Question What is that one great horror/thriller audiobook that riveted you so much you couldn’t stop til the end?

I’ve recently discovered that good audiobooks help me stay productive cuz I only listen when cleaning or exercising. I need something that’s gonna suck me in and not spit me out until the conclusion. Some of my fav writers are Stephen King, Joe Hill, Linwood Barclay, Stephen Graham Jones, Tana French, Stephen Graham Jones, Jeff Strand & many more. Specific books I truly love are the last days of jack sparks, my heart is a chainsaw, pet Semetary, and nos4a2. Thanks!

Promotion [US and UK Promotion] Dead Planet by Drew Avera

Hey everyone!

I'm Drew Avera, an indie science fiction author, and I have some free audiobook promo codes available for my Dead Planet trilogy, narrated by Al Kessel.

The series is a dark, action-packed science fiction adventure set in a future where humanity has colonized Mars, only to fall under the control of a corrupt government known as The Syndicate.

To maintain its power, The Syndicate uses brainwashed enforcers who carry out orders without question.

One of those enforcers is Serus Blackwell.

When Serus discovers that his sister has become a target, he turns against the organization that made him a killer. What follows is a fight for survival that takes him from the cities of Mars to a devastated Earth and back again.

If you enjoy dystopian sci-fi, government conspiracies, cyberpunk, and morally complicated protagonists, this might be up your alley.

I have free audiobook promo codes available!

If you're interested, leave a comment or send me a DM, and I'll get you a code while supplies last.

Reviews are always appreciated but never required.

Thanks for checking out my books!

The future is darker than you think.

I'm looking for a good anime audio book that is in the style of theatrical with sound effects and multiple voice actors.

I'm a big sucker for all things horror, rpg and even the slauky slice of life like my time at breakwater club. I use audible but willing to use another service. Thankyou

Recommendation Request Audiobooks that can completely hijack my attention while I clean?

I need to have a good cleaning/laundry day.

Any audiobook recommendations I can completely lose myself in?

My audio preferences are a little particular…

Narration is a HUGE factor for me. A great book with the wrong narrator can be impossible for me to get into. I need someone who’s genuinely engaging to listen to, not just someone competently reading the words.

I love humor, especially clever, absurdist, observational, or satirical humor. I’m a big fan of Simon Rich (particularly The Last Girlfriend on Earth) and Amanda Montell (Wordslut was fantastic on audio). I also love writers like Sloane Crosley.

I’m a big nonfiction/essay fan, particularly when the writing is witty, insightful, and a little irreverent. If Our Bodies Could Talk by James Hamblin is a good example.

I’m not opposed to fiction at all, but I tend to prefer reading more literary or stylistically complex books in print. I loved The God of Small Things, for example, but I think I’d struggle with it as an audiobook.

I have a tendency to tune out audio without realizing it, especially when I’m doing something else. Books that require constant close attention or have complicated plots with lots of characters probably aren’t ideal. Short stories, essays, and books with a strong narrative voice tend to work better for me.

For additional context, some of my favorite podcasts are You’re Wrong About, Maintenance Phase, If Books Could Kill, Behind the Bastards, and 5-4. I love the combination of interesting subject matter, sharp writing, humor, and genuinely entertaining personalities.

I want something so entertaining that I’ll keep finding more things to clean because I’m not ready to stop listening.

Bonus points for anything available on Audible, since I have credits to use!

Discussion A great narrator can permanently overwrite the voice I had for a character in my own head

I recently picked up a physical copy of a series I had previously only listened to, and something slightly weird happened.

I wasn't really reading it in my own internal voice anymore.

The narrator was still there.

Not vaguely. Specific characters entered a scene and my brain immediately supplied the exact rhythm, accent and delivery from the audiobook. Even jokes landed with the pauses the narrator would have used.

The clearest version of this for me is Steven Pacey and The First Law books. After enough hours of those audiobooks, I don't think I could make Glokta sound different in my head if I tried.

Which is funny because when I read print first, I normally feel quite protective of whatever voice I've invented for a character. If an adaptation or audiobook later sounds radically different, it can take me a while to accept it.

But apparently enough hours with a really good narrator can completely evict the original tenant.

It also changes rereading in a way I hadn't really considered.

You can stop listening to the audiobook, open the paperback, sit in complete silence... and still sort of be listening to the performance.

I've had the opposite happen too. If I read several books in a series before trying the audio version, sometimes a perfectly good narrator feels "wrong" simply because I've already spent 2,000 pages casting everyone myself.

The strangest cases are narrators who make a minor character far more distinctive than I imagined them. Then I return to print and suddenly a character I barely noticed before walks onto the page with this enormous personality because I'm hearing the performance rather than just seeing the dialogue.

Has a narrator ever become the permanent canonical voice of a character for you?

And does it survive when you switch back to print, or does your original internal version eventually come back?

Recommendation Request Recommendations for a France roadtrip?

Hey all! My wife and I are going on a trip to France soon and we'll be driving around the countryside a fair bit. We want to have an audiobook to listen to together while driving, looking for recs.

For reference the last 2 books we've listened to together are Dungeon Crawler Carl book 4 (my pick), and The Croning (wife's pick). Ideally we want something easy to listen to that isn't super complex or convoluted, not something that requires a ton of focus to internalize details, which rules out the next DCC book. I'm not really down for a horror book for this trip either. Maybe something that takes place in France or is otherwise thematically appropriate?

Thanks for the recs!

Recommendation Request Can anyone recommend some good non-romance novels read by Julia Whelan?

So I got 8 hours into Great Big Beautiful Life before I realized it was a romance novel (maybe I’m slow). I was going to abandon it because the sex scenes kinda made me just zone out. But then I realized I liked the narrator too much and went back to it and finished it.

I really think the narrator is a huge part of what makes me stick with an audiobook, so I thought I’d look at what else Julia Whelan narrated. And they all seem to be romances? Does anyone know any good ones she’s read that aren’t? Or at least ones where the romance is a very small part of it?

Thanks!
