Book Discussion Cozy & intelligent fantasy or SciFi recommendations

Im looking for a cozy but simultaneously smart and intelligent fantasy series. I love some political drama and worlds which provide many details to get lost in. It can be SciFi, high fantasy, fantasy in a modern setting, alternative history or steampunk.

Technical Question Listening Process

• Upvotes

Normally to listen to a book on my PC I will open the audible.com site, go to the 'Hi HectorB!' link on the right and select 'Listen History' fro the drop down list, click on the book cover of the book I'm currently listening to which will open the Audible player where I last left off and begin playing. Something has changed because now when I click on my current book cover under 'Listen History' it resolves to a page that states:

Sorry, it looks like this title is no longer available.

We apologize for the inconvenience.

So now to play my current selection, The Kept Woman' by Karin Slaughter, I have to search for it and then select it from my 'Library'. Note that I purchased this book via credit card on 02-19-2026. Can anyone explain why this is happening? Did I do something wrong?

IOS 4.79.2 won’t play anything

I can download but can’t listen to anything in my library. I get Audible Error Code IP-2 when I test on Wi-Fi or cellular.

Posting after restarting, deleting and redownloading my book, and deleting and redownloading the app. No books in my library will play, but they did 30 minutes ago.

Need to use credits

Hello! I have 6 credits and one will expire on 22/10. Do you have any recommendations for me? I particularly enjoy full cast as opposed to just a narrator. I enjoyed Impact Winter, I have all of the HP full cast series (I know, it bothers me that I have them too) as well as Northern Lights, and the BBC Narnia Chronicles. Interested in non-fiction recs too, I’ve recently enjoyed Salt, and anything by Patrick Radden Keefe.

Based on these listens, what should I use my latest credit on! Looking for recommendations! (I’ve also listened to all the Mind Hunter/John E Douglas ones as well)

Android app new bugs

Three recent observations on my up to date pixel 7a:

Swiping right didn't work once recently on the expired sleep timer hang, but pressing play still unhangs.

The preview timer can also hang on expiration!

Trying to drag the play progress thumb/dot backwards behaved strangely; it let me drag it backwards, but then jumped back to the end, and the screen hung as usual (this was after timer expiration). Pressing play unhung the app.

Virtual Voice

Audible. Your awesome. Make my days so much shorter... but can we please get rid of those Virtual Voice audiobooks? They have no emptipn behind them. Makes me cringe to even listen to a sample. Ive seen a huge number of books id love to hear but can't stand the Virtual Voice. Example: THAW by Bryan Dunn.

Technical Question Help remote starting audio book (missing in library of alexa app)

We use the alexa echo dot to play my gandmother living in an other country to play audible audiobooks.
But since a few weeks we do not see all the books in the library. As she is almost blind, we have far more than 50 books in the account and now can't choose the books for here in the alaexa app to start the book on the echo dot...

Do we have any possibility to hide to old books so they do not show in the 20 books visible in the Alexa app?

Log out of the app, deleting the app and reinstalling, installing it on a new device, login into amazon and audible,... everything did not work.

And starting it by voice is not possible for my grandmother...

Any other ideas?

Built a PC audiobook player that keeps your place and opens the book’s PDF beside it

Hi, I listen to a lot of audiobooks on my PC, and I also like building apps. My player kept losing my place in long books, and the companion PDFs (charts, maps, worksheets) were always buried in another folder. So I built a player for my own M4B and MP3 files that:

  • picks up exactly where you left off, every time
  • opens the book’s PDF right next to the audio, and remembers the page
  • shows chapters, plays a folder of MP3s as one book, and has speed and a sleep timer

It works with DRM-free files (M4B/MP3), not Audible’s protected downloads.

It’s Windows-only for now and I’m deciding whether to develop it further. If you’re interested, there’s an interest list with a few quick questions at https://a30v.com/books. I’d also love to hear what your current player gets wrong.

Thanks, James

Alternatives to Audible?

I just experienced the throttling for the first time after buying a few new audiobooks and trying to download them with OpenAudible. I then deleted my account info on OpenAudible and reconnected, and the converting worked for about 20 books before I got throttled again. I tried deleting and reconnecting again, but it didn't work this time. So now I need another way to convert the audiobooks to mp3/m4b, and if there isn't one, I'm canceling Audible. Is there a different way to convert the files? I know there is Libation, but wouldn't I have the same issues? And does anyone have a suggestion for what to replace Audible with?

Book Discussion Who decides what counts as unabridged?

In particular Full Cast editions?
I can understand removing dialogue tags, and even dialogue descriptors. Famously in the new Harry Potter recordings: 'Dumbledore asked calmly' is famously removed due to how polarised that line has become.

Yet things have been changed from the original text in that series' recording.

Order of The Phoenix, end of chapter 16: Dark is changed to Dark-haired (this was originally brought up by me in Harry Potter subs but they were removed and I was banned from one. And at the risk of me being banned from here as well, I will just leave this vague I suppose and get a discussion in the comments going on exactly WHY that line was changed to dark-haired.
The erasure of certain undertones from classic books is dangerous imo. Harry Potter is counted as a classic now, and changing a character's description from dark to dark-haired, after another character says they didn't like them, changes more than just the wording and feel of a scene.
The original text and the US text describes the character physically as dark. A number of translations (German, Mandarin and others) say dark-skinned.
As far as I can tell, the only editions that call the character dark-haired is the new Audible recordings.

I would be interested in getting into a discussion about where the line is with audiobooks on unabridged, who makes that decision, and more importantly, how and why the source material is changed.

There are many more altercations including...
Deathly Hallows, The Epilogue is counted as Chapter 37, but nothing else I could find

Technical Question Sally Rooney books

Following the removal from sale of Sally Rooney books in the UK, I have noticed that the two books I had purchased though audible have been removed from my library. How can this be fair when they have already been sold?

Dear Audible

Dear Audible,

I need 4x speed.
I’ve reached a part in my listening journey where x3.5 is just to slow, especially in books that just have 1 narrator… it is killing my soul.

Fellow readers, I know most of you don’t agree but I just wanted to share. I know there’s a small minority of you who share in my pain!

Sincerely,
A beloved listener.

Canceled membership but still being billed

Does anybody know why audible would still be trying to bill me when I canceled my membership like 3 months ago? Luckily i keep my card locked so the charge hasn't went through but it tries at least once a week. I'm 100% positive it's been canceled. I've been debating deleting my account to see if that works but I'm worried that if it doesn't work then I will NEVER be able to figure out how to make it stop.. any suggestions?

Book Discussion Bound by Ali Hazelwood.

I’m listening to the audiobook and reading the ebook and there’s sentences missing frequently in the audible version? It’s so frustrating! Because I’m reading along and there’ll be chunks in the book that are missing from the audiobook or different wording in the book than what’s being read to me. Does this bother anyone else? It’s a great book too! Just started it but it’s so interesting so I was just curious as to if these things with audible bother others. :)
