Events/Promotion Astoria Events Calendar!!!

Post image
26 Upvotes

Hello Astoria!

For over 10 years, I've been running the Astoria Live newsletter and instagram, which serves to share local events, communities/clubs, and opportunities to connect in the neighborhood. I do this pretty much for free, because I love living here.

I just finally relaunched the website with a full events calendar and guides - which are curated lists for different types of things in the neighborhood - could be anything from karaoke spots to plumbers. I'm also going to get my annual voting guide ready asap!

Anyone is welcome to add events and listings totally for free forever (though I will probably introduce an affordable sponsorship tier to cover my costs) and can even suggest new guides. I'll review and approve them to make sure it's not spam. I'll be adding lots more myself in the coming weeks when I have time.

Check it out at AstoriaLive.com and feel free to email me at [hello@astorialive.com](mailto:hello@astorialive.com) with any suggestions, or bugs you come across. Enjoy!!

Thank you!!

<3 Stacey

Question Tire Slashing and Keying Cars

Has anyone else’s car gotten their tires slashed and car keyed recently? Over the last few months, my parents have had a total of six tires slashed and three sides of two different car keyed. Not sure if this is targeted or a problem going around in the area nowadays, specifically between Crescent Street and 21st St. It’s super annoying and confusing because I don't know why someone would do that. My parents are old and scared that maybe someone is following them home and doing that. If anyone has any information, input, or advice, i’d love to hear it. Hope you all stay safe!

Rant Taking up two parking spots to save a spot for your giant a** truck

May I ask your opinion on people who parked one of their cars deliberately in 2 car spaces to block another car from parking up just to reserve a spot for a giant pick up truck?

I’ve been watching it happen for the past few months on this couple in my street. It’s a weekly thing now. It’s a street parking. No one should be reserving a spot let alone for a big truck. If the spot is there, it’s yours. Otherwise, look for one like everyone else. Go get a parking spot if you can’t find parking easily instead of inconveniencing others.

It just feels very entitled in my opinion and maybe I am entitled myself for being bothered by it. I just think if you can’t find parking spot for a giant pick up RAM and you have to steal parking spot like this with your wife’s car, get a smaller city friendly car.

General Discussion Crying cat

There is a cat that is crying somewhere between 42nd and 43rd and Broadway. Does anyone know of a good rescue to contact? I tried checking for it but couldn’t find it.

Question The Zone 2 - 31st ave & 44th st

Anyone else live around here and been kept up all night from this place? I don't mind a bar/club across the street but I can hear the lyrics to the music in my apartment with all the windows closed.

I don't want the place shut down or anything but it would be nice if they kept the club in the club and not the entire intersection. They also had people outside after until 5:00 yelling and beeping horns.

Not great neighbors.

Question What's your routine for vetting prewar buildings before handling over a deposit?

Toured a couple of prewar places off 30th Ave and Broadway this week. The layouts and space are great, but my last building had chronic steam heat outages that the landlord conveniently ignored all winter. Trying not to make that mistake again. Before applying, do you guys stick strictly to complaint history and hpd records? What else should I be checking?

Question Museum of moving image question

Hi! I’ve never been to Momi before, and I got a ticket to the Léa Seydoux event. I’m a huge fan (have a popular fan acct), and plan to get there early, but idk when they’d let me in. I want to get there like 2 hours early to make sure I get a front seat. Would they let me in or would they start a line somewhere?

Question Handbag repair?

I have a leather purse I got in Florence that had a fastener break. Does anyone have suggestions of where to get it fixed in Astoria? I was going through old posts in this sub and saw D’Carlos recommended, but it’s been a few years since that post so not sure if anything’s changed. Also ideally it would be affordable!!!

Seeking Recommendation: Food Pumpkin shaped bagels

Trying to get in the spooky season spirit this weekend. Do any local bagel shops have the pumpkin-shaped bagels? Any other fall treat recommendations are greatly appreciated!
