Discussion Ask collectors: what did you actually check before paying?
Gallery side in NY, two years. Keep watching the same thing happen. Someone buys their first serious piece, loves it, and two weeks later starts asking: was that price normal, should I have gotten a certificate or just the invoice, why is the same artist half the price at auction. All fair questions. All after the money moved.
At that price level nobody's on your side. Advisors don't take you, the gallery can't be neutral, friends shrug.
So I'm curious how the people here handled it. Before your last purchase at that level, did you look anything up, ask anyone, or just go with your gut? And if someone had offered to do that homework for you, recent results with sources, what paperwork to ask for, questions for the seller, for a couple hundred bucks, would you have taken it or does that feel unnecessary?
Not selling anything, just trying to understand if this is a real gap or if I'm projecting.

Collecting/Curation “Neighboring” Art as Provenance
A small local auction house is doing an estate sale where they are selling three paintings signed by a moderately well-established artist. As context, the artist does have an active secondary market, including work sold at the “major” houses, but it usually sells in the 4 figure range.
Of the three paintings, two have no provenance other than the signature (which does look like a match). The third has a tag from a Sotheby’s auction 25 years ago where it was apparently acquired from (the artist has been sold several times by Sotheby’s, again typically in the four figure range).
My question is whether the fact that another painting sold at the same auction, and presumably from the same estate, has the Sotheby’s provenance also would be deemed to help indirectly authenticate the other two? The theory is that if the consignor has one piece by this artist that’s pretty clearly authentic, it’s considerably more likely (obviously not guaranteed) that their other works by the same artist are also authentic.

Discussion Should I destroy a fake I own?
We recently picked up a bunch of art from a local auction and I'm happy with what we got, for what we paid.
Most of the pieces were put in lots, so there were several that we weren't interested in that came home as well.
One is very clearly a made-to-deceive fake. Its also not very good or interesting.
I'm leaning towards just destroying it and donating the (ugly) frame. Other option is to try out some restoration work and see if I can uncover the base painting it was done over.
What would you do?

Discussion Do you buy originals from Instagram auctions?
Hello collectors and artists. I’m not sure if this has been asked here before as my search didn’t fetch anything thus far.
Curious how collectors here see Instagram art auctions. Have you bought an original that way, and how did it go? If not, what keeps you away?
And if you would, what would make you feel safe bidding?

Auctions Nordic Print Market Intelligence: Blomqvist Weekly Recap (Munch, Miró, Picasso & Regional Arbitrage)
Hi everyone,
Following our automated print market tracking engines, we just processed the latest weekly auction results from **Blomqvist** (Oslo).
The session offered a fascinating look at regional dynamics, showing robust domestic competition for Scandinavian masters alongside remarkable sub-€500 entry points for international blue-chip prints.
### 🏆 Top Institutional Sales
* **Edvard Munch** — *"Liggende Løvinne"* (1908–09)
* **Sold:** NOK 150,000 (**€14,145**) | *Est. NOK 80k–100k* (+50% over high estimate)
* **Kai Fjell** — *"Pikehode"* (1987)
* **Sold:** NOK 130,000 (**€12,259**) | *Est. NOK 80k–120k*
### 🎯 Blue-Chip Masters Under €500 (Regional Arbitrage)
Scandinavian regional houses continue to present accessible entry channels for international 20th-century graphics:
* **Joan Miró** — *From "Maravillas con variaciones acrósticas"* (1975) ➔ **€471** (NOK 5,000)
* **Pablo Picasso** — *Fra "Carmen"* (1948–49) ➔ **€396** (NOK 4,200)
* **Marc Chagall** — *"Le Chat et les deux Moineaux"* ➔ **€188** (NOK 2,000)
### 🇳🇴 Nordic Post-War Highlights
* **Håkon Gullvåg** — *"Hestens erindring I"* ➔ **€1,320** (NOK 14,000 vs. NOK 8k est.)
* **Gunnar S. Gundersen** — *Komposisjon i rosa* (1970) ➔ **€848** (NOK 9,000)
### 💡 Key Takeaway
Localized demand keeps top Norwegian master prints well-bid and resilient, while international names offer sharp arbitrage opportunities well below typical Western European gallery retail values.
For anyone tracking regional print pricing models, I publish a deeper breakdown with full tabular data weekly over on Substack: [Nordic Print Market Intelligence](https://printmarketintelligence.substack.com/p/nordic-print-market-intelligence-f87).
Curious to hear others' thoughts: are you seeing similar regional pricing discrepancies in your local auction markets?

Art Market How do you evaluate the resale market for contemporary limited-edition prints?
I'm researching the secondary market for contemporary limited-edition art prints and would appreciate insights from experienced collectors.
I'm particularly interested in works where the following information can be independently verified:
The artist's identity and the work's title Edition size and, where applicable, the artist's signature Provenance, including original purchase records or gallery documentation Actual secondary-market sales, rather than current asking prices Whether comparable works have sold more than once over time
For those who collect or trade contemporary prints, which sources do you trust most when researching realized prices?
I'm also curious about how you distinguish between a print that has genuine collector demand and one that is simply marketed as a limited edition.
I'd especially appreciate examples involving emerging or mid-career artists, where the market may be less transparent than it is for established names.

Collection Showcase My latest find
Found a lovely oil painting by Julia Heseltine in the charity shop. Couldn’t see a signature so opened the frame and it was signed in the back. I liked reading about the artist and her life. She was the daughter of renowned painter Anna Zinkeisen. Interestingly the inside board has another title “Gods and beggars”. Not sure if it was the back board for another painting?
A little bit about her life:

Discussion Looking for an affordable alternative
I am really interested in these paintings by Jim Warren. “You Light Up My Life” and “Let’s Brighten Up This World”
But they are both out of my budget unless I do a sold month and a half of overtime. So if anyone knows of any similar prints at a lower price, by Warren or another artist, I would appreciate being pointed in the right direction.
To clarify the cheapest I found either print was $650. My current budget is around $100-$200.
Thanks in advance.

Collecting/Curation When purchasing canvas paintings, do you prefer the art to be framed or unframed?
I’m planning a series contemporary geometric acrylic paintings. I hope to exhibit these paintings next year. I saw another artist displayed 3 of her largest canvases unframed, then all her medium pieces and smaller pieces were framed in thin light wood (birch?) frames. My preference would be thin black frames, but what do I know? My art has 20% darks accents but is primarily medium to light values. I think black or light wood would go in most decors. I live in Florida so maybe for coastal decorating light frames would be best. But I hope to avoid framing for my future exhibit altogether. I’ve been an etched glass artist for years so I’m not sure of the protocol for canvas artwork. What’s your preference?
