I'm helping a family member with their new iphone, their previous iphone was stolen and the new phone I am helping with is the one they purchased and moved their number to and obviously marked their previous phone as stolen to disable access and start using their number on the new phone.
Let me start off by saying that this family member is not tech savvy so they don't know their security questions, that is 100% on them and not apple's problem.
Here is where I believe apple has a problem, with the recovery/reset process.
They didn't know their icloud password (they have all their passwords stored in one note file on the iphone that was stolen) so step 1 was to reset the icloud account password. Thankfully they knew their gmail password which is where their icloud is tied to so that was simple, type their email, click forgot password, reset email arrives and I proceed to reset the password. Apple tells me it is successful and I THOUGHT I could simply login to icloud.com and see the notes app on there and/or login with the new password on their new iphone and wait for sync to do its thing. This is where things went bad. Several issues.
As soon as I tried to login to icloud.com, iforgot.apple.com, account.apple.com it accepted the password and immediately took me to the security questions that I needed to answer. They didn't know any answers (again, 100% their fault) but I couldn't get past this part.
Tried logging into the new phone under settings, apple account, typed in the information and it could not verify the account.
Tried to reset the security questions, it asked for apple ID and password, successfully authenticated and then a message appeared stating that the security questions can't be reset at this time.
Called support, 0 wait time, but I had to go through their crappy AI agent, I get to a human and they instruct me to attempt to reset the security questions online, I explained that I tried several times so they did a screen share with the apple device we were on and the support agent kept saying that the screen we should be getting should be a security questions reset screen but all three times we tried their method it was only showing to reset the apple account password. They wanted me to download the support app and just as I was getting ready to open the app store and download the app, they hung up on me. Thanks apple.
What a crappy experience this was and we still were not able to get into the account. They are going to go to the apple store, tomorrow, and try having one of the agents help them. One of the things that the support person told us during the call was that there is a possibility that the system is 'timing out' since we previously tried resetting and that's why this isn't working. We never did try resetting the security questions, but we did make enough attempts to have the system tell us to try again later, so it could be related to that.
I was expecting more from apple. Not knowing the security questions is on the user, 100% their fault, but I'm a bit shocked that apples account reset options suck.
