[Question] Should I switch to Ableton from Fl?

• Upvotes

I’ve been using fl for a few years now and it’s the only DAW i have ever used, but i’m starting to wonder if it really is the best for me still. I’ve been making indie alternative sorts of songs and I’m starting to feel that fl really isn’t tailored to live music recording. So i’ve starting looking into Ableton as that feels like the best option? I really am not sure but would like a more streamlined process that after some research i think ableton could offer? Has anyone made this switch or just has any advice to offer? Also if you think the switch would be difficult? Thank you all sm!

[Max for Live] I made a Max for Live device that saves the clip you click into your sample library

I kept making sounds I liked and then losing them in old project folders, so I built a small Max for Live device to file them while I work.

Click an audio clip, type a name, pick a pack and a category, press HARVEST. The clip's source file is saved to Library/Pack/Category/Name.wav. You can keep an exact copy or set the level on the way in (Peak, RMS or LUFS). With it on the Main track and the floating monitor open, you can file clips from any track.

One honest limitation: it saves the original file behind the clip, not your warp/crop/fades or effects, so resample or consolidate first if you want those :)

Ableton 11 / Ableton 12 or later, Suite or Standard with Max for Live, Mac and Windows. It's a paid device; link in the comments. Questions welcome.

[Question] Is there a way to assign effects to specific midi notes?

So for awhile I’ve just been manually automating effects on specific notes I want them on in the mixing window constantly dragging the automations to on off on off on off or whatever else I need.

Then today I was just kinda like yeah it would be nice and less monotonous to be able to just select certain notes I want certain effects on in the “piano roll”.

So is there a way to do that? I tried looking around but haven’t really seen anything.

[Performance] Push 3 audio output to Beats Pill 2024+

Hey everyone. I am trying to create a super lightweight "electronic jams by pool or park with friends" setup for my Push 3.

Has anyone successfully gotten the Push 3 to output audio to a beats pill 2024+? If so, what was your method?

[Question] Where do I even start?

Hello all,
I have installed and made 2 very rudimentary beats house tracks by following YouTube guides. Do you have any YouTube series recommendations for me. I have little to no music knowledge and just want to make beats/ house tracks for fun. My mission has been to learn a new creative outlet. Any advice or places to start would be much appreciated. Thanks again.

[Question] Warp beats mode

Hey, quick question for those how sometimes work with other DAWs.
Can you make this Warp beats mode effect in other daws? Is there a plugin or something for that?

I'm trying to recreate this on FL studio:
https://youtu.be/1bBSs3LTUdE?si=Z7PdY0AXWQ-FaIQl

And my version doesn't sound quite the same, I think it is because of the usage of the Warp beats mode. What y'all think?

[Max for Live] Randomizer device that can select a random preset on startup?

Hi guys, does anybody know if there's a randomizer device that can select a random preset in a synth, just when it gets loaded (and when a song is opened) and when a button is pressed?

Background: when starting Live, I always have a default preset loaded in the active track. I'd like this synth to start with a different preset everytime I load Live or my template set.

Search Max4Live and found a plethora of randomizers, but none for that specific task.

[Performance] Ambient With Stock Ableton

Ambient With Stock Ableton

While I made this video for another thread to focus on the Novation controllers, I wanted to place it here as well because all the sounds are stock Ableton. The more I use third-party synths, the more I appreciate and return to stock Ableton synths, packs and effects. For my style of ambient, they’re just so good and I find I really don’t need anything else. As a composer and not a sound designer, I really appreciate the abundance of presets and then the ability to fiddle with the macros and let that be enough. There’s also a unique sonic character to the stock stuff that I find really inspiring.

Who else is using nothing but stock Ableton for their music?

Peace,
Heavens Spin Gray

[Question] Vocal synchronization issue with external audio file

Hello everyone,

I have a recurring problem that some may have a solution for.

I record podcasts with ableton. I split my voice and the other persons voices into different audio channels. My voice comes from my mic and the others' come from discord. Sometimes the other person records locally their mic and send me the audio.

The issue is that when I import the audio file (let's call it the "outside track") and synchronize it with the discord track, the two tracks stay synchronize, but the outside track is slighty getting ahead of the original one, recorded via discord. It's as it was faster, with a higher bpm.

It there a way to realign everything together ?

Thanks for your help !

[Question] Playback Bug

Hi, I got a live show recorded on Ableton that I'm gonna use as a virtual soundcheck and every time that I set a new playback position it lags and I have to force quit and reopen every time.

Anyone experiencing this?

I've got my buffer size all the way up, I did a Collect All & Save so it doesn't miss the files but none of the options have made it run smoothly.

I'm running Live 12.4 on an M4 chip, 24Gb of RAM and up to 200gb of free space.

[Synths] Native Access Virus TI support on macOS (Apple Silicon and Intel), Windows 11 and first-ever Linux support

Hello everyone,

Over the past few days, I've run countless tests, switching back and forth between three operating systems to make the version more and more stable.

Many hours have gone into the reverse-engineering process and testing on all platforms using the actual hardware.

I probably don’t need to mention that this was done with massive support from AI, but I still believe that writing posts involving human interaction should NOT be done by AI. That’s why I wrote this post myself typos included xD.

After extensive testing on macOS and Windows 11 using Ableton, I’m now confident enough to share the news, and I’m looking for people who own Access Virus TI hardware and might want to participate in the testing phase.

All features and bug fixes are listed on this page.

https://derpsn.github.io/access-virus-ti-revive/

If you'd like to really dig into it, there's also a link to GitHub available.

The plugin is free and will stay free.

[Push] Ableton Push 2 power adapter causing speaker noises

Took me way too much time to diagnose this problem so I'm sharing it here in case someone else encounters it:

I've been having speaker and headphone noise in my home studio for a while. I thought it was a grounding issue so I changed various cables, plugged everything into different (and also the same) power outlets and updated the drivers of my audio interface but still couldn't resolve the issue. I even thought there was something wrong with my electric wiring at home but the issue persisted even after moving to a new place. There was always this annoying high-pitched noise.

The thing that did solve it in the end was getting a new power adapter for my Ableton Push 2. I tried a generic adapter first but that didn't work. Got an original power adapter from Ableton in the end and when I plugged it in, the noise was gone.

The thing that got me on the right track was checking if I could run the Push 2 with bus power only. That worked, but the lights on it were rather dim.

Still don't really know what exactly caused this problem but I'm happy it's gone now.

[Question] Live API: Get play/overdub position in the loop from Ableton Looper?

Did anybody find a method to get the position of the playhead in the loop from Ableton Looper stock device, using python and the API?

I tried creating a workaround that "estimates" the position but it doesn't always get it right. If anybody found a way that would be amazing. Im writing a device script to control Loopers with a launchpad with visual feedback, for live performances.

Thanks a lot

(And is there a community somewhere for Ableton Script coders?)

[Question] Problem with finding BPM

Hey I’m sampling a song which I have pitched up, and want to find the bpm of the pitched up sample. I set 1.1.1 on the down beat then go warp from here (straight) like a video by Abeltons YT tell me to do.

But the problem is that the bpm it gives me is incorrect and the whole song is warped to it and sounds bad. Is there a better way to find the bpm of the track? Thx

[Question] How to learn

Every night I sit down and make stuff with the computer. Eventually something good comes out.

But I can’t help but wonder, how to learn?

Is doing this routine going to improve my skills? Or could I be prioritizing other routines in order to make my music better?

How to learn?

How much time do you spend making stuff in Ableton playing around and how much watching tutorials or learning new skills?

Okay
