Visa Infinite Credit Card Accidently activated my wealthsimple credit card before delivery

Hello. I accidently activated my credit card before it was delivered. I have some important purchases for construction materials to make and so I thought I had to activate the card in order for the transactions to go through (using google pay).

I later learned that you're not supposed to activate it as it makes you vulnerable if someone gets the physical card before delivery. I didn't know the virtual card is activated automatically. In order to be safe, I locked the card for now. However, I don't want to have to lock/unlock for every transaction going forward until the physical card arrives in 1-2 weeks.

I read that there was an option to lock just the physical card and not the virtual card, but I'm unable to figure out how to do it. I've tried the app and browser but I don't see two distinct cards with options to lock one and not the other, I only see a singular card in the app and in the browser. Thank you.

Chequing Is there a post-mortem for the ~2 weeks long Prepaid Visa outage?

As listed in https://status.wealthsimple.com/incidents/f8kj47b6kzv0 the card was out for close to two weeks. This impacted me severely because I became unable to pay for most of my daily transactions, including my Apple subscription and a few services I need for work (thankfully reimbursed). I assumed it was just a growing pain from the transition to Visa and it would take at most a day or two to resolve but it extended far beyond what I find comfortable or reasonable for a financial service.

To pay bills again I opened an account quickly at a local branch of a Big Five and moved some money there. The Visa Debit card they offered was mercifully accepted by the services that the Wealthsimple prepaid failed to cover so I wasn't delinquent for too long. However as my paycheque came in and Wealthsimple's card wasn't recovering I opted to point my direct deposit at my new bank account and stay on the new card until then.

Now it has recovered three days ago, which is good, but I haven't heard the why. I've seen a few theories online (such as reused Peruvian numbers?) but of course all earsay. Did Wealthsimple ever explain what happened? I need to know at least some technical details about the cause so I can feel confident again in the service and not worry about my assets suddenly becoming less accessible.

Is WS missing a GIC?

I started investing last June, lost about 3% once I bought stuff too high.

Moved half of my money back to EQ GIC at 3.7% and considering doing the same with the remaining 100K. Yeah I know I will lose my VISA privilege but a Visa is not worth losing 3% of 60K. Unless WS launch some kind of GIC I am considering to get out here!

Banking with WS for CAF members while posted abroad?

Does anyone know if CAF personnel posted outside Canada (returning after 2 years) can maintain their WS accounts (chequing, credit card, registered investment accounts)?

Other posts have indicated that WS will close your account when you no longer maintain a residence in Canada. I figured my case would be unique since the military has compelled me to live+work abroad and to return to Canada once my posting is over. Fwiw, I still pay fed+prov income taxes like before.

Editing purchase amount

I feel like being able to edit amounts of purchases helps to have a more clear understanding of my spending. For example: i went to bowling twice the past month with friends and i want to edit the amount i actually spent instead of the full amount that everyone e-transfered to me and other purchases also because i do end up paying for things that me and my friends go out with and they just et me the money but i look at my spending and i be like “how did i spend this much money this month”

Wealthsimple Visa Infinite - RQAP deposits not eligible for fee waiver

TL;DR: Wealthsimple refuses to count my Quebec parental leave (RQAP) direct deposits toward the $4k/month requirement for the Visa Infinite fee waiver. Got charged $220 and support says I’m out of luck until I return to work.

Hey everyone,

I’m looking to see if anyone else has run into this issue or has any advice on how to escalate it.

I have the Wealthsimple Visa Infinite credit card, which has a $220 annual fee. However, the fee is supposed to be waived if you meet their $4,000/month direct deposit threshold.

My partner and I recently had a baby, so I am currently on parental leave in Quebec, receiving my benefits through RQAP (Quebec Parental Insurance Plan). My RQAP direct deposits exceed the $4,000/month requirement, but I was just charged the $220 annual fee anyway.

I figured it was just an issue with the automated system not recognizing government insurance deposits as standard payroll, so I reached out to support. They escalated it to a "senior specialist" who reviewed my payslips and direct deposit documents. Their response?

They told me that RQAP deposits "don't meet the requirements for the monthly fee waiver" and that the fee will continue to apply until I go back to work and re-establish my regular paychecks.

I replied asking them to explain exactly why parental leave insurance doesn't count as a paycheck, because right now it feels like I'm literally being penalized by their system for having a kid. It makes absolutely no sense.

Has anyone else on parental leave (EI or RQAP) dealt with this? Did you have any luck getting them to manually waive it, or should I just give up?

Edit: thanks for the replies, I'll keep you posted

Money invested in something giving the most overdraft protection amount? Thanks

Trade (DIY Investing) Stock holding discrepancy

Thumbnail

Update: Found what the issue was.The earlier app UI showed all holdings including the managed accounts. With new update now, the app shows holdings only for Self directed accounts. So the numbers shown on that page have changed. Imo this new change is confusing and the reason behind my confusion on the discrepancy. Thanks to everyone who responded.

I always speculated that the way WS shows stock holdings lacks transparency and seems off so months ago I started taking screenshots of some of my major holdings, Alphabet Inc. (GOOG) was one of them. I took a screenshot of my holdings on Aug 11 when i held 15.2675 shares of the stock between my self directed TFSA and non-registered account. Yesterday I bought 1 more unit of the stock and checked my holdings today- the stock holdings DID NOT increase by 1. I did not sell any units during this period. The fractional increase is probably because of Dividend reinvestment.

So what is happening? Is WS not updating timely or running a fraud system where our actual holdings are not shown correctly?
I am probably overthinking and panicking and maybe I am making a mistake (which I hope I am) but this doesn’t make sense to me. Has this happened with anyone else? Looking for guidance on what should I do.
Screenshot 1 is from Aug 14 and screenshot 2 from today (Oct 23)

Chequing Prepaid Visa card does not work in ATM or any POS machine purchase

This new card is so flawed its unbelievable. Ive went to BMO, Scotiabank, Laurentian ATM's and every single time i tried to withdraw it gives a card read error. Now I am hearing that we have to choose the credit option instead of the chequing option but not all ATM's even provide that option!

Then i read that RBC and TD ATM's seem to work fine. What is the purpose of this card when only select ATM's will work???

Then I was wondering if the chip it is trying to read is any good, so i tried to purchase something with a POS machine using the chip and PIN (not tap). The moment i insert the card the POS machine instantly says card read error and would not let me use the chip, this happened with all machines.

I contacted Wealthsimple support and they kept saying that I was using it wrong. Honestly so disappointing. The mastercard worked flawlessly and it was extremely convenient. Now I am nervous to even use this visa card as a travel card because of how inconsistent it is! What a downgrade!

I will update y'all if the credit option works with the other ATM's.

Also FYI BMO ATM's only accepts mastercard apparently if your not a BMO customer? Thats what the person at the branch was saying.

EDIT: Thanks guys, ill order myself a new one instead of going through their terrible support.

Looks like the TELUS Marketplace offer is now available on Core too!

Heres the BYOD offer:

  • 25% off eligible TELUS 5G+ plans for 24 months
  • 30,000 TELUS points

The offer says it’s exclusive to the Wealthsimple app.

Has anyone tried signing up yet? Curious what the actual monthly pricing looks like after the discount and whether there are any plan restrictions.

Wealthsimple Visa Debit not supporting Wise payments

Did anybody use their old mastercard debit for Wise payments? I do regular $100 wise transactions weekly. It is now not supported by Visa debit. Anybody else having this issue?

Trade (DIY Investing) Wealthsimple doesn't allow you to see today’s return and the total return at the same time anymore.

Unless you click on some other icons. It worked fine until yesterday. Why forcing us to click on 56 850 buttons just to see the info we need?

EDIT: You can’t see the book cost either, unless you click the stupid button.

EDIT 2: Wait, it gets worse! Because they moved the “holdings” section right under the chart, you can’t see the price of a stock/etf AND the bid/ask in one go. You now have to scroll for this. Wtf is this mess?

Visa Infinite Credit Card Considering the WS credit card

So I saw that it’s a 20$ monthly fee. I haven’t ever used credit cards before, so I was wondering what would it be like when I open that account? 2% cashback seems appealing to me especially since I also do some spending often as well at times. Is there interest when I put money back into the credit card and if so how much would that cost be or does the monthly fee cover for that?

Would there be a card that does cashback for all types of purchases?

Chequing I still haven’t been offered the prepaid Visa to replace the my Mastercard?

I know that Wealthsimple is going to drop support for the Mastercard for the cash account soon but I still haven’t gotten any notice to switch to the visa. I’ve seen that it’s coming out in waves but my brothers have both already gotten their new Visa cards but I haven’t yet. What’s going on?

How does virtual card differ from prepaid card in Apple Pay

I have my WS virtual card in Apple Pay and just added my new WS prepaid Visa card in Apple Pay.
1. Is there a difference or benefit to having a virtual card when I could just use the prepaid card in my wallet?
2. I ordered the new WS prepaid visa and right now it’s in my Apple wallet (physical not received) as well as virtual card with Mastercard. Is that going to change? Do I need to do something?

Adios, Wealthsimple

That's it, we're out.

A little over $400,000 in RRSP, TFSA, savings, and chequing. All moved out, never to return.

The last couple of months of relentless promotional gimmicks added up to the final straw. This unceasing need to acquire new deposits, new customers, new money, started looking increasingly problematic. Then they added crypto, then they added prediction markets. Plus more giveaways. And more giveaways.

I'm not saying that Wealthsimple is a Ponzi scheme. I am saying that looked at from an objective perspective, it has all the hallmarks of a Ponzi scheme.

There seems to be a constant need to keep the new money coming in.

Worse, its depositors are eager participants. To say that they are credulous is an understatement. (Anyone with money to deposit who doesn't know what "credulous" means is an ideal Wealthsimple customer.) I include myself in this category, of course, until enough became enough. The bells and whistles. The special perks. Please, just stop.

There's an old saying that you should never invest in something that you don't understand. I pretended to believe that Wealthsimple was safe, despite not being a bank, despite not having its own CDIC insurance, despite not having a parent banking institution or other financial entity underwriting the risk.

In short, I was happy to accept the umbrella "fintech" definition, as if this buzzy abbreviation meant anything more than, "A new way to get depositors' money. You know, move fast and break things! Disruptive innovation!"

There's a crash coming. I don't want my money to be tied up in a Tech Bros scheme that only works when the rest of the market is healthy because there is sufficient additional depositor confidence to avoid a bank run. Or a fintech run.

I'll take bricks and mortar, please. Or online subsidiaries of bricks and mortar. Lower interest rates? Fine. The capital is protected. I'm now sleeping much better at night.

Cheers.

Promotion Boo to the merchants prizes.

It is nice enough that they are doing it, but I hate the merchant prizes. Am I alone in wishing I could select entries instead of the $10 credit or add it back in the pot for someone else to claim.
