That's it, we're out.
A little over $400,000 in RRSP, TFSA, savings, and chequing. All moved out, never to return.
The last couple of months of relentless promotional gimmicks added up to the final straw. This unceasing need to acquire new deposits, new customers, new money, started looking increasingly problematic. Then they added crypto, then they added prediction markets. Plus more giveaways. And more giveaways.
I'm not saying that Wealthsimple is a Ponzi scheme. I am saying that looked at from an objective perspective, it has all the hallmarks of a Ponzi scheme.
There seems to be a constant need to keep the new money coming in.
Worse, its depositors are eager participants. To say that they are credulous is an understatement. (Anyone with money to deposit who doesn't know what "credulous" means is an ideal Wealthsimple customer.) I include myself in this category, of course, until enough became enough. The bells and whistles. The special perks. Please, just stop.
There's an old saying that you should never invest in something that you don't understand. I pretended to believe that Wealthsimple was safe, despite not being a bank, despite not having its own CDIC insurance, despite not having a parent banking institution or other financial entity underwriting the risk.
In short, I was happy to accept the umbrella "fintech" definition, as if this buzzy abbreviation meant anything more than, "A new way to get depositors' money. You know, move fast and break things! Disruptive innovation!"
There's a crash coming. I don't want my money to be tied up in a Tech Bros scheme that only works when the rest of the market is healthy because there is sufficient additional depositor confidence to avoid a bank run. Or a fintech run.
I'll take bricks and mortar, please. Or online subsidiaries of bricks and mortar. Lower interest rates? Fine. The capital is protected. I'm now sleeping much better at night.
Cheers.
