My first experience was bleh but it wasn't a top-rated lounge and in a small airport. The free bottled water was probably the highlight.
Second experience was much better. I had a domestic flight from Bangkok to another city in Thailand at BKK airport. I had intended to get a proper lunch at a nice spot, but was a bit slow in the morning and there was a protest which slowed things down. By the time my Grab (like Uber) arrived to take me to lunch, I decided to change plans go to the airport, which was doubly a good decision because then the automated check-in kiosks weren't working for me so I had to wait in a long line for manual check-in for my flight.
I hadn't eaten yet and was really hoping the lounge would work out.
I went to the Coral Executive- one of the first ones I saw- after passing ticket check. BKK is strange in that the lounges & food options are after ticket-check but before bag security. After bag security there aren't any restaurants IRRC, and seemingly no lounges either (BKK domestic by the way). This was confusing and I was anxious because I had already arrived later (and hungrier) than I would've liked. Thankfully I made the right decision to do the lounge BEFORE security.
The main food was pretty okay... One of the things was fairly good (chicken biryani). I didn't like the over-abundance of seafood options as I'm not a seafood fan. If you like seafood, you'd probably quite like the food. It all seemed fresh enough. There was some chocolate mousse dessert thing that was great. Other misc stuff were good.
When I entered the staff made me feel very welcomed, and there was a manager lady that helped me find a seat and helped me get stuff, etc. I think it could annoy some people but being as it was my second time in a lounge it was nice being a bit more guided. She was SUPER nice. Offered me beer and other stuff, I said just water, she was like "nah nah sit let me get your utensils and water for you." Seat was comfortable, space was kind of small, but it was pretty good. I didn't notice any bottled water to take with me lol.
Overall I'd say the food wasn't bad, and some pretty good. If it were a paid restaurant I wouldn't be so happy about it, but for "basically free," it's pretty good. The desserts are nice. I don't drink alcohol these days but if you do you'd appreciate the free beer.
If there was an airport restaurant that I knew to be quite good, or looked much better, I'd still consider eating a main meal there but still plan to swing by the lounge for chilling before boarding + free snacks + water.
I'm fairly liking this perk of the VX! Priority pass isn't something I'd pay for, but I'll put up with spending $300 via the portal for this.
Edit: and it was nice technically saving $ by not having to buy an airport meal and getting a little time in a nicer area. However for BKK domestic it is kind of annoying having to pass security before your final gate, I don't really like "lounging about" before security from bags but that's an airport complaint not about VX/PP
