I recently acquired a Shakespeare 2052 to dip my toes into the world of vintage ultralight after seeing all of the cool finesse-tuned Abu reels. And I must say, I reelly like it. It is nowhere near as smooth and low resistance as my modern Daiwa reels with its lowly single ball bearing in the rotor, but like a good whiskey, smoothness isn’t everything! The low gear ratio paired with the ratcheting anti-reverse makes it effortlessly easy to get into a slow and steady retrieve for micro spoons. The compact size and dense weight also was not a problem, it balanced perfectly just in front of the reel seat on this 6’6” TFO T&P2. The only gripes I really have with it is being used to modern conveniences like not being able to manually close the bail and no drag clicker. If, like me, you have only ever fished with modern reels, consider dusting off your dad’s old Mitchell and give it a spin!
