Calling all local Marines in the DMV area! Last year’s event was a tremendous success. Hope to see you there.

Rah Devil Dogs! About a week ago, I picked up this all weather jacket from a thrift store in the Norfolk/Virginia Beach area (I'm stationed aboard JEB Little Creek/Fort Story for my MOS school). It is my understanding that these jackets are no longer issued. Does that mean I'm allowed to wear it with proper civilian attire, or would that be stepping into the stolen valor territory? Thank you and Semper Fidelis!

While going through work refresher training last week came across a conversation here that has really good reasoning for the new helmets.
Why did they stop issuing helmet covers? : r/USMC
Given the Corps is concentrating on island chain fighting in the Pacific is the new enhanced combat helmet - high rise (ECH-HR) really a good idea for that environment? One poster nailed it when they explained the majority of casualties comes from shrapnel effects after ordnance detonations. Jungle and forest are notorious for increasing harmful effects as bits and pieces of trees, rocks and everything else are whipped up during the blast wave. These two photos show heavy jungle canopy to illustrate the effect.

Over the years these three helmets were fielded to meet various protection levels that eventually came down to open country desert warfare and urban environments. As mentioned above shrapnel effects greatly increase in heavy forest and jungle.

During World War II the Germans developed their primary helmet for European forests which afforded them greater protection than the Allies at that time. Their intent was to move increased debris away from their head and neck area when it rained down on them from 0 to around 50 degrees.

What if we took a page from Germany's playbook and designed a forest/jungle helmet that rolled outward like their's while still maintaining the overall basic enhanced combat helmet frame? Use the new composite materials, make it a little wider around the ears to accommodate earphones and leave the equipment rails on the side. Again just add the increased neck and side protection for forest/jungle environments.
It's still all about using whatever it takes to help save Devils and Docs lives. Just an idea and like always I'm open to everyone else's thoughts on this.

How was ya'lls experience moving from MCRD to Pendleton? What are your best memories?

To make a long story short, I was in the reserves, I checked out, but my unit never dropped me from their rosters and I got a 0 PFT/CFT because they marked me down as having not taken them, even though I was no longer actually drilling with them and was in the IRR. Since I’m out, my only real concern is how this could affect me if I want to 1. Try to switch to another branch at some point 2. Try to get a contracting job either private sector or with some other DoD program and 3. If I want to get a job with a federal agency. Does anyone have any insight as to if this actually would matter at all? I don’t have any negative paperwork associated with this, no adverse fitrep, etc. I double checked my current OMPF and there isn’t anything in there either. Thanks.

Last night my first cousin who was like a brother to me who also served in the marines and went to Iraq when he was 19 committed suicide last night and he was 44. Over the last ten years he has also lost 4 friends to suicide. His wife found him this morning and we are all devastated. Guys please reach out to someone that can offer help, I know you can’t unsee some of the things you saw or had to do and I can’t imagine the struggles some of you go through. He was one of your brothers and was a great person. Please if any of you feel like you can’t go on anymore please talk to someone that can help. They say suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem but some of your problems aren’t temporary are they. Please don’t give up people love you and I’m grateful for each of you.

u/Semi-Chubbs_Peterson might be onto something here, myth-making and hero-making sure, but if it makes actual myths into reality and creates heroes , why fix if it ain't broke? Carl Jung might be right after all its all about symbols and symbolism.
oh yeah, for the haters out there, Dr. Johnson also crapped on 267x's for never getting the language down. something like Rad BN Marines will never get 3's across the board, but the rest of the Marine Corps will have Marine culture to spread.
Which carries with it its own weight. in gold. and red.
And in the end, thats what wins wars.

Read this in twitter awhile back for Nov 10, it was one of those list your coolest Marine Corps birthday story threads.

My dad was the CO and told us about how it was leaked when and where the Marines were landing. Sure enough, media was there and cameras were rolling when the Marines landed. I have the whole 40 minute DVD they made for that float, so if any Marines were there and/or want the video, let me know. I'll find a way to get it to you. I probably just about wore this VHS tape out when we got it.

Recruiters even had their own Bulletin prior to WWI where they shared these stupid (some were actually smart) ideas on how to increase their numbers.
This was until CMC John Lejeune put an end to all this Recruiter driven publicity for more curated Marine Corps publicity and propaganda.
I'd love to see Marine Recruiters get back to catching sharks though ngl.

Looking to become an aerial observer. Just did UET as part of PTP about a month ago, will I have to do a flight crew variant of the UET a second time?

This is one of those benefits that is probably easy to miss.
MARADMIN 501/26 updates the process for Marines to get reimbursed for qualifying adoption expenses.
Eligible Marines can receive up to $2,000 per adopted child, with a maximum of $5,000 per calendar year.
Covered expenses can include:
The big thing to watch is the deadline: claims generally have to be submitted within 2 years of the adoption being finalized, and the child has to be enrolled in DEERS first.
If you adopted recently, or know a Marine who did, this is probably worth sending their way.
Details in first comment. For some reason the AI bot filters on the sub thought the story was asking for recruiting info and blocked the content from the OP
