u/Semi-Chubbs_Peterson might be onto something here, myth-making and hero-making sure, but if it makes actual myths into reality and creates heroes , why fix if it ain't broke? Carl Jung might be right after all its all about symbols and symbolism.
oh yeah, for the haters out there, Dr. Johnson also crapped on 267x's for never getting the language down. something like Rad BN Marines will never get 3's across the board, but the rest of the Marine Corps will have Marine culture to spread.
Which carries with it its own weight. in gold. and red.
Given the Corps is concentrating on island chain fighting in the Pacific is the new enhanced combat helmet - high rise (ECH-HR) really a good idea for that environment? One poster nailed it when they explained the majority of casualties comes from shrapnel effects after ordnance detonations. Jungle and forest are notorious for increasing harmful effects as bits and pieces of trees, rocks and everything else are whipped up during the blast wave. These two photos show heavy jungle canopy to illustrate the effect.
Over the years these three helmets were fielded to meet various protection levels that eventually came down to open country desert warfare and urban environments. As mentioned above shrapnel effects greatly increase in heavy forest and jungle.
During World War II the Germans developed their primary helmet for European forests which afforded them greater protection than the Allies at that time. Their intent was to move increased debris away from their head and neck area when it rained down on them from 0 to around 50 degrees.
What if we took a page from Germany's playbook and designed a forest/jungle helmet that rolled outward like their's while still maintaining the overall basic enhanced combat helmet frame? Use the new composite materials, make it a little wider around the ears to accommodate earphones and leave the equipment rails on the side. Again just add the increased neck and side protection for forest/jungle environments.
It's still all about using whatever it takes to help save Devils and Docs lives. Just an idea and like always I'm open to everyone else's thoughts on this.
Last night my first cousin who was like a brother to me who also served in the marines and went to Iraq when he was 19 committed suicide last night and he was 44. Over the last ten years he has also lost 4 friends to suicide. His wife found him this morning and we are all devastated. Guys please reach out to someone that can offer help, I know you can’t unsee some of the things you saw or had to do and I can’t imagine the struggles some of you go through. He was one of your brothers and was a great person. Please if any of you feel like you can’t go on anymore please talk to someone that can help. They say suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem but some of your problems aren’t temporary are they. Please don’t give up people love you and I’m grateful for each of you.
To make a long story short, I was in the reserves, I checked out, but my unit never dropped me from their rosters and I got a 0 PFT/CFT because they marked me down as having not taken them, even though I was no longer actually drilling with them and was in the IRR. Since I’m out, my only real concern is how this could affect me if I want to 1. Try to switch to another branch at some point 2. Try to get a contracting job either private sector or with some other DoD program and 3. If I want to get a job with a federal agency. Does anyone have any insight as to if this actually would matter at all? I don’t have any negative paperwork associated with this, no adverse fitrep, etc. I double checked my current OMPF and there isn’t anything in there either. Thanks.
My dad was the CO and told us about how it was leaked when and where the Marines were landing. Sure enough, media was there and cameras were rolling when the Marines landed. I have the whole 40 minute DVD they made for that float, so if any Marines were there and/or want the video, let me know. I'll find a way to get it to you. I probably just about wore this VHS tape out when we got it.
