Discussion quit my bio minor and graduate a semester early?!

• Upvotes

I've started as a bio major at UNC and taken chem 101/102, biol 101, 103, 105, and 220 (all with A's). I pivoted over to Business and would be able to graduate from that track a semester early next year. However I really wanted to be able to graduate as a minor. I need a 400 class and 200/L class remaining (7 credits total).

Here's the issue:

  1. Prereqs: all the 400 classes layer on 104. The major isn't 15 credits, it's really 30 when you look at all the layering pre-reqs and it SUCKS.

  2. Poorly rated profs: The classes that have been available without taking additional classes the past two semesters have had below a 3 on RMP with the professors. This feels like way too much of a gamble to take with an already brutal course of study

Additional info:

  1. No plans if graduating early: maybe I'd go visit my grandparents and spend time with them? I guess I could let my summer internship know and see how that pans out. But I don't have a grand idea to travel the world or cure cancer or anything in the extra semester

  2. Financial savings minimal: I work and have a large scholarship so I wouldn't really accrue debt with the extra semester

  3. Not really into the "college experience": I don't have a super strong friend group at Carolina and don't feel particularly tethered to the community here. I like it here, don't get me wrong, but it's not been the best years of my life.

I want to go get a bio minor to
1. not let my work go to waste (those classes were BRUTAL)
2. parents want the prestige of a stem degree (they'd be very disappointed but fine in the end; I'd just rather not let them down over 3 classes)
3. think having a bio degree will help me pivot to PA school if I ever want to change careers down the line.

Question Graduating early and its impact on med school applications.

Hello! I am planning to graduate early. I have completed almost all of my pre-med classes and will be taking the MCAT in the spring. I already have a solid amount of impactful clinical hours, and I am currently focusing on research that should yield tangible and meaningful results by next year. I haven't finalized my timeline yet but I am definitely leaning towards taking a gap year. Will graduating early and then taking a gap year impact how admissions committees view my application? How would it look if I graduated early and applied straight through without a gap year?

Admissions/Application Question Assured enrollment

Does anyone have any insight into how the Assured Enrollment selection process works for any of the programs at UNC?

I’m particularly curious about what happens after the initial application reader determines that a student should be admitted to UNC. From there, who reviews the application for Assured Enrollment, and how is that decision made? Is there a separate committee or review process? And does anyone know what factors they weigh most heavily when deciding who receives an Assured Enrollment spot?

Question Embarrassing question about how to use flex/plus swipes

So I'm planning on buying a meal plan next semester for the first time, and I'm wondering how the ordering works at places like Bojangles and Chick fil A. Could anyone walk me through the process exactly? I don't want to look like a clueless idiot or slow everyone down while trying to order. (Yes I have social anxiety)

Question Is my Spring 27 schedule too much

I am planning to take Psyc 210 and Psyc 270 together with Data 110 is that too much? My other classes are easy Gen Eds. I am a Psyc B.A. with a minor in Data Science. I have had some STEM heavy difficult semesters before I switched from pre med to pre clinical psych. I just want to make sure I am not doing too much. Anyone have advice?

Question Are there any classes that would help with writing med school application essays?

not necessarily a class that walks you through the application but more like classes that help you develop the skills needed for it.

would any engl class be applicable?

Question Weirdly specific question, but is there a place on campus I could find sheet metal, specifically a cut of sheet metal that makes that wobbly noise? I need to record the sound it makes.

I figure I'd try campus before I just go to home depot or something, but I need to record sheet metal that makes this sound for a project in my music production class.

Edit: lots of great answers, thanks everyone!

Discussion Today I learned about the Carlyle Cup, an annual multi-sport trophy that went to the winner of the most events that both universities mutually participated in.

The series began in 2000 and ended in 2011 because the jeweler, Carlyle & Co., went bankrupt in 2009 and it only lasted one more academic year with a new sponsor in Continental Tire. The series is led by UNC at a record of 7-3-1. The last winner, UNC, has remained in possession of the trophy ever since.

I apologize for the low-res photo. I searched for a half hour for a better photograph of the actual trophy, but there doesn’t seem to be a single picture on the internet besides this one from Wikipedia.

Would you like to see this trophy make a comeback?

Schedule Business Class combos and what to add?

Taking 401/407 now and plan to take 406/408 next semester.
Is it OK to add 403 or another core class? Or better to do electives to balance it out more?
Is there a preferred timetable for classes - i.e. are some classes mostly filled with seniors so not great for a sophomore.
I’m mostly done with Gen Ed’s but do I add others to lighten the work load?
Any advice on schedules/timelines that worked would be great.
I don’t know what area of focus I want yet if that helps.

Question UNC CHM 241L and BIO 101L

So.... I'm trying to take CHM 241, BIO 103, PHYS 114, and CHM 261 all in the same semester to keep my graduation plan. Obviously, it looks like I might just pass away next semester, but I swear it's necessary. The problem is that I need the labs for CHM 241 and BIO 101, but I can only register for 13 credits in the first wave. How likely am I to get these labs in the second wave or during open enrollment???

Question in state applicant... should i lose hope?

**not a chance me, just want to see if my circumstances will be heard out over numbers on transcript**

4.457 W and 3.826 UW GPA

rank 35/383 (top 9% of class)

test-optional

would say i have very good extracurriculars and personal statement (those aren't my worry)

on paper these stats look fine, above average even. looking at my transcript i was a straight A student freshman and sophomore year but when junior year hit: 2 B's and a C (88, 86, and 79). clearly they were higher B's and C's on the scale but at the end of the day i still got those grades (Chem Honors, AP Precalc, AP Stats). in the additional info section i mentioned how i was diagnosed with a medical condition that constantly left me unable to prioritize my schoolwork, and that now as a senior i am back to managing my classes with straight A's this semester. i guess i am just worried because i don't have the test scores to back me up. i have a 1330 SAT superscore but felt that was too low to send in so went test-optional.

obviously i don't expect them to ignore the major decline in grades my junior year, but is it time to start losing hope?
