Sex / Gender / Dating Women are misunderstanding why men are annoyed at women dressing provocatively at the gym.
I’ve seen all kinds of takes as to why there seems to be an uptick in men commenting on what women are wearing to the gym, and why jokes like the one Shane Gillis made on SNL are on the rise. I’ve seen people be confused and ask why men don’t like seeing women dress provocatively, that you’d think they’d like it. Ive seen people say women used to dress scantily at the gym and nobody cared. I’ve seen people suggest that the issue men have is that they want to control women, or that they are angry and jealous that they can’t have them, there are all kinds of theories.
IMO, these all miss the point. The issue is that men are sick of being made to feel like lecherous creeps. They’re sick of normal, healthy male sexuality being twisted into something dirty and wrong. So when we are showered with videos “catching” men glancing at a woman for half a second at the gym, or see endless posts about how disgusting it is to hit on a woman in the gym, combined with women dressing more and more provocatively, it adds up. Now when I see a woman in the gym wearing underwear, I need to be vigilant that I don’t look in her direction. I don’t want to have to be worried about that, I want to just work out.
This attitude of “I’m going to dress and act as sexually provocative as I can, but fuck men if they look” is pervasive throughout culture, and men are sick of it. Every pop star, celebrity, they all act like this.
If we just went back to “I can dress as provocatively as I like, but I’m not going to act shocked when guys check me out, and I’m not going to deny that this is in fact a provocative outfit”, then everybody could go back to normal. But we can’t just keep sending messages to men that their normal sexual urges are gross and need to be hidden at all times unless specifically, verbally asked for, and then having women parade around them in their underwear. It’s a recipe for disaster.
