What anime changed the way you read its early episodes on a rewatch?

I like when a reveal doesn't just surprise you but makes earlier scenes and character choices click in a new way. Attack on Titan is an obvious example for me, but I'm curious what other shows pulled this off. Keep examples spoiler-light for anyone who hasn't seen them yet.

Seeing how deeply people interpret anime changed how I think about fandom

I’ve always considered anime and manga one of my main hobbies, but using Reddit has made me realize that “loving a series” can mean something much deeper than I used to think.
Sometimes I’ll ask a simple hypothetical question about a character, like, “What do you think would have happened if this character had survived?” or “Why do you think this character made that choice?”
And then someone will respond with an entire interpretation of that character’s life.
Not just how strong they would become or what they would do next, but how their personality might develop, who they would connect with, what kind of mentor they would need, how their past would affect them, and even how their existence could change the themes of the story.
Sometimes I read comments like that and genuinely think, “How can someone care enough about a fictional character to imagine their life this deeply?”
I mean that in the best possible way.
It happens constantly on Reddit.
People can look at the exact same scene and see completely different things.
One person interprets a character’s actions as insecurity. Someone else sees selflessness. Another person argues that both are missing the point and gives a completely different interpretation.
Same story. Same scene. Completely different readings.
And what fascinates me most is that people actually explain why they see it that way.
I’m Japanese, so I grew up surrounded by Japanese anime and manga. I’ve always known that these works are popular overseas, but knowing that something is “popular” and actually seeing how deeply someone from a completely different culture has thought about a character are two very different things.
Someone thousands of kilometers away can read about a fictional character’s loneliness, exhaustion, dreams, failures or relationships and connect those things to experiences from their own life.
At that point, it doesn’t really feel like “Japanese media being enjoyed overseas” anymore.
It feels like a fictional person created by someone in Japan somehow became connected to the personal memories and inner life of someone who grew up in a completely different world.
I think that’s incredible.
I’ve also noticed that Reddit seems to encourage people to have interpretations of their own.
People don’t always stop at “That scene was cool.”
They ask why it affected them, why a character behaved that way, what a decision says about that character, or what might have happened if they had chosen differently.
Then someone disagrees, explains why, and suddenly several strangers are discussing the psychology of a fictional character as if they were talking about a real person.
Sometimes I honestly think, “There’s no way even the author thought this far ahead lol.”
But I love it.
When I first started posting, I mostly thought it would be fun to see which characters, designs or ideas people preferred.
Now I think what I enjoy much more is asking questions where the answers reveal how someone understood the story.
Sometimes you ask one small question and someone gives you an interpretation they may have been carrying around for years.
And suddenly, you get to see a story you love through somebody else’s eyes.
I think that might be one of my favorite things about talking about anime and manga with people from around the world.

What does complex/mature themes even mean?

This is more of a reflection of mine recently. What I mean is that as I have gone through my 20s and faced struggle in my job, my relationships, and even my passions outside of work, I realize that mature doesn't mean what it used to. In your everyday life the emotional intelligence you really need to succeed/function is closer to what you see in Toradora or Blue Exorcist, not in many of these titles typically called mature or complex. The courage to express yourself even though you might get hurt and the courage to take a chance asking someone out even though you might be get hurt. And I have worked really hard both at my job and at learning the piano, and anime like Blue Exorcist and My Hero Academia teach me more practical lessons for the struggles I encounter in both those endeavors. On the average day I'm not trying to figure out if genocide is justifiable or keeping the hippocratic oath like in other more mature anime. Rather I'm trying to fight the fear and pain of failure and regret and keep getting up out of bed and getting to work when I don't want to. Also trying to stick to practicing piano daily even when I feel like I don't have the talent. And honestly Blue Exorcist and My Hero equip me with better examples to follow than many of these more mature anime. Anyone else have some thoughts/caveats about this?

Edit : I should add I've watched many good mature titles like Monster, Attack on Titan, Berserk 90s version. And I love them, not saying they're bad.

I finished Food Court de, Mata Ashita - My thoughts

This is one of the most relaxing slice-of-life anime I’ve seen. Sure, it can change at times, but I loved it a lot, and I’ll explain why.

For some, you could argue that it’s ’overrated’ and that it could be a boring SoL because there’s no plot. But, while I didn’t enjoy Maid-san wa Taberu Dake, I enjoyed this one! Also, from my perspective, it’s underrated and it’s more than your typical SoL show - it’s the fact that the girls, Wada and Yamamoto, have good character writing and aren’t one-note. Sure, they talk about niche things a lot throughout six episodes of this anime, but I still love them.

The animation and art are above-average, especially during episode four, and I love the character designs, too. I love the ED, too - it’s sooo relaxing.

The only reason I didn’t score it higher than an eight is because Wada’s voice can sound kinda annoying and irritating (e.g. when she screams ‘YADDA!!’ in episode 4). But anyway, I enjoyed this show for what it’s worth, and will be giving it a solid eight out of ten! If you disagree, that’s OK!

About the Anime Planetes specifically episode 4

I’m watching the anime Planetes right now. It is basically a show about a small group of space debris cleaners working for a company. In the anime, debris cleaners are extremely important, since even a single screw flying too fast could easily take out a spacecraft.

Episode 4 is about the son of a high-ranking stakeholder of the company. He goes along with the cleaners to clear some space debris, but as it turns out, the son is very entitled and is actually responsible for creating a lot of the debris himself driven by the sentiment of "the cleaners will clean it anyway." One of the main characters then attacks the son out of anger after discovering that he purposefully creates debris. The son replies, "If you beat me, you are going to get fired." To anyone who has watched the anime, this sentiment of "be nice to your boss or you will get fired" isn't anything new, although it is pretty silly.

Another detail of the anime is that the debris section is also called the "Half Section," due to it being half-staffed, half-effective, and, of course, lacking sufficient funds.

Now, my question to anyone who has watched the anime is: How could the boss actually fire the debris cleaners? If you look at it realistically, they are pretty much unfireable stay with me here. The debris crew members are the only staff on board who are in life-threatening danger daily due to having to go out into space. According to the characters themselves, they are not well-paid, and to top it all off, there are only four of them actively working in space, with only three able to spacewalk at a time. Yet, as I already mentioned, they are critical to the company.

This means that if the stakeholder wanted to fire anyone, they would have to find a replacement willing to work with cheap, deteriorating equipment on life-threatening missions for little pay and with very little chance of promotion all while every other company offers more staff, better pay, and superior equipment.

The anime also has that funny sentiment about debris cleaners having to make money by cleaning more dangerous debris, which logically doesn't make any sense since the debris cleaners work isn't about making money through environmental groups (how its actually told in the anime) but rather about saving money by cleaning debris that could destroy the companies equipment.

Hope someone else watched that anime its pretty good.

Custom Flair [Spoilers ]Maquia's ending relies on artificial emotional manipulation rather than logical character writing. (Let’s talk about the post-credits scene) Spoiler

Don't get me wrong, Mari Okada's film is visually stunning and the soundtrack is a masterpiece, but after rewatching it, I can't shake off how much the script sacrifices character logic just to force tears out of the audience.

The community usually defends Maquia’s ultimate departure from Mezarte as "letting Ariel go" so he can live a normal, independent human life. But let’s be honest: what she did wasn't a mature parental detachment. It was straight-up decades of ghosting.

By the end of the war, both Maquia and Ariel had achieved immense emotional growth. Ariel overcame his identity crisis and fully accepted her as his mother. Maquia grew from a helpless crying child into a resilient woman who literally delivered a baby amidst chaos. A verisimilar, mature family dynamic dictates that Maquia would stay in touch, even if from a distance, or at least send a letter. There is absolutely no logical reason to cut total contact with your son and completely ignore the existence of your granddaughter for over half a century.

People love to use the "Iorph curse/isolation" as an umbrella excuse for her disappearance, but that defense completely crumbles with the post-credits scene.

The post-credits shot shows the Iorph clan rebuilding their village, living peacefully, and actively weaving again. They didn’t go extinct, and they weren’t trapped in hiding. Maquia had a stable community and a home base. The fact that she chose to remain entirely silent until Ariel was literally on his deathbed proves that her "contact zero" policy wasn't an inevitable tragedy of fate; it was either selfish emotional self-protection to avoid watching them age day by day, or worse, a massive narrative convenience.

Mari Okada sacrificed the organic psychological evolution of her characters for the sake of an effective melodrama. She needed a shocking visual contrast—perpetual youth versus extreme old age—to make the audience sob, so she forced Maquia to vanish. If Maquia had been a regular presence or a distant but caring grandmother through letters, the deathbed scene would have lost its sudden tear-jerking shock value, but it would have made far more sense for their relationship.
