Learning track riding on a 130 HP bike vs. switching to a Duke 390, thoughts?
Hey everyone!
I’m a relatively new rider (about 2 years of riding experience) and also pretty new to trackdays. I’ve done a few trackdays so far and while I absolutely love it I’m still very much a beginner and have a lot to learn.
My current bike is a 130 HP twin-cylinder with plenty of low-end torque. It’s an amazing machine but sometimes I feel like it’s simply too much bike for my current skill level on track.
Recently I had the chance to ride a KTM Duke 390 on the twisties and I absolutely loved it. It’s incredibly lightweight, playful and easy to handle. I honestly felt more confident riding it than my current heavier and bigger bike.
That got me thinking about buying a Duke 390 as a second bike, both for street riding and trackdays.
My main goal on track isn’t to be the fastest guy out there. I want to become a genuinely better rider, improve my cornering, braking, body positioning, and overall technique.
I’m wondering whether learning on a smaller, less powerful single-cylinder bike like the Duke 390 would actually help me develop those skills faster compared to sticking with my 130 HP twin.
For those of you who have experience with both smaller and more powerful bikes on track:
Did riding a smaller bike help you become a better rider?
Do you think starting on a powerful bike can slow down your learning process?
Is a Duke 390 a good choice for trackdays or would you recommend something else?
Would you stick with the bigger bike and focus on improving or get the 390 to build a stronger foundation?
I’d love to hear your experiences, especially from people who switched from bigger bikes to smaller ones.
Thanks!
BTW I prefer a naked over another supersport since I will use it on the street as well...
