If anyone adds the mustache man I'm strangling you personally.

When the villain technically "wins", is never proven wrong or faces consequences because they put lead in their head before justice caught up to them, their death is not a punishment but a way to avoid accountability or being proven wrong.

  • Kano from Tokyo Ghoul, after placing Rize's organs in Kaneki, using him as a prototype, making more and more experiments, aiding the main villain and inadvertently moving the entire plot of the story he concludes that now humanity will have to acknowledge the possibility of using Ghouls for medical purposes and with that done he shoots himself in the head, his last thoughts being "So this is death, how interesting."

  • Kraven from Marvel Comics in Kraven's Last Hunt, after shooting Spider-Man, burying him alive, dressing up as him and then going out in the NY fighting crime and killing people and proving himself as superior to Spider-Man he just leaves a letter confessing all his crimes and then shoots himself in a casket.

miscellaneous [Meta Trope] Famous quotes that are interpreted differently then their original contexts

Thumbnail
gallery
4.1k Upvotes

"Well, that escalated quickly..." (Anchorman): Not only does Ron Burgundy actually say "Boy, that escalated quickly", he actually sounds genuinely shocked while most people quote it in a somewhat deadpan manner or in awkward yet composed manner like you're trying to break the tension.

"Why are you booing me? I'm right!" (The Eric Andre Show): The meme is often used to back up hot takes when in the original context, it was right after the 2012 Election when Obama won. Eric Andre says he's excited for another 2 years of Obama, causing the audience to cheer, Hannibal Buress (You might know him as the comedian who got Bill Cosby locked up) interjects and says that there's actually going to be 4 years of Obama (To all the non-Americans, a presidenal term there is 4 years), and the audience boos him, leading to the line. So, in other words, Hannibal didn't actually drop a hot take or say anything controversial, he just said a basic simple non-controversial fact and got booed for it. As a result, most people probably read the line in a smug manner like Hannibal knows exactly why he's being booed and is just asking rhetorically where in the actual scene, he's genuinely annoyed and confused that they're booing him.

"Bye Felicia" (Friday): First things, first, the character's name is spelled Felisha. The quote's often used as a way of saying ""Don't let the door hit you on the way out". Except that's not the context in the actual movie. In the scene, Ice Cube's character says it to get Felisha to leave, not while she's already leaving. So the context is less "Don't let the door hit you on the way out" and more "This conversation's over, I'm not entertaining this, you are leaving me alone, and that's final.". Also, this might just be me, but I always pictured the line being said in response to a very long and tedious conversation where in the scene, Felisha has a brief conversation with Chris Tucker's character where she tries to borrow his car and later a joint and he dismisses her so she tries to turn to Ice Cube's character and he immediately dissmisses her with the line. Also, I always imagine the line being said in a snarky and insulting way but in the scene, Ice Cube's character just sounds done. Finally, I always imagined Felisha being this loud, overly obnoxious, argumentive character where in the scene, while she does act somewhat entitled, she's fairly calm in this scene and most of the humor in the scene comes from Chris Tucker's character telling her off in an over the top way, to which she backs off pretty quickly.

"KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!!!" (Star Trek: The Wrath Of Khan): The scene is often pictured as Kirk raising his head and screaming at the sky for an unnaturally long time as it pans out to the planet. In the original scene, Kirk basically just barks Khan's name, he's also facing forward. Finally, the scene is cited as one of the most prominent examples of Shatner/Kirk being hammy but in-universe, Kirk is likely intentionally hamming it up into tricking Khan into thinking he's won.

  1. In Mr. T's Hitachi data center Commercial, Mr T is being very aggressive against the hammy but relatively level headed antagonist, however, he is shown to be the good guy by promoting virtualization while the small stewie headed guy is against it

  2. In the viral "Get Out of my car" video, the driver is yelling at the woman who is just talking in a calm tone, however, considering the context of the rider bot wanting to leave even though she was at the destination and filming the driver as if she was trying to provoke him, most side with the driver.

  3. Real life example, there was once a video of a woman arguing for abortions, the video shows the conversation to be relatively civilized, however the big eyed expressions gave it a more "angry liberal" vibe

Powers (Loved tropes) People actually lie about or obscure how their powers work

Thumbnail
gallery
3.5k Upvotes

I like to think that in a universe where everybody has varying powers that people would at least occasionally obscure factors of it or make crap up because honestly who's going to check you?

Megumi Fushigoro (Jujustu Kaisen):

After Regi gets a good blow in divine dog, megumi takes advantage and spends most of the fight manipulating Regi Star into believing that it was unusable because of that

He immediately dismissed divine dog as if it was out for the count and for the rest of their skirmish he used everything in his kit besides divine dog and played the act of someone desperate

Once he finally neutralized Regi's technique and led him to believe he had nothing up his sleeves either, the two engaged in a brawl

Right in the middle of throwing down, Megumi summoned divine dog and tore his shoulder

Edit: Divine dog was actually never unsunmoned, it's because his CT was burnt out from using his domain that Regi knew he couldn't summon any new shikigami and was caught off guard by divine dog

Metro Man (Megamind):

A man who's practically a demigod and cares quite a bit about public opinion

He began to realize this hero buisness wasn't really for him

There's no plausible way for him to loose to most of megaminds schemes and he dosen't want to make the people belive he abandoned them

He ultimately decides to play along with one of megaminds schemes and on live television claim that copper drains his powers

No one expected it but it's not like they could disprove it

He successfully used this premise to fake his death

Isuel Kim (Hand Jumper):

In a plot by the main character, Sayeon, Isuel Kim possed as an aberrant who's power is to ignite fire

His actual ability is telekinesis but he manages to disguise this by pretending he's just too incompetent to use ability the first round

Then the next round he shows up he ends up becoming the perfect suprise that the enemy can't account for

This actually happens a lot in hand jumper

Sayeon herself lies to everybody by telling them her gift is "Super instinct" which tells her the optimal thing to do, when in reality it's actually time reversal

If people knew her actually ability was time reversal then they'd plan around it or her allies would be overly suspicious of someone who could have repeated this conversation 5 times already

Lore ( Funny trope ) Something considered incredibly rare or valuable in one world, but treated as worthless or normal from another perspective

Thumbnail

• Upvotes

The Naljian Destructor (Ben 10: Alien Force):

Ben and Kevin spend the entire episode treating this device like a multi-planetary threat capable of destroying the Earth and copying high-tier alien tech. At the end of the episode, a cosmic mother shows up, picks it up, and scolds her child for leaving their literal baby toy lying around. Also it revealed how even the Omnitrix ( level 20 tech ) that everyone wants to have is just the equivalent of a children's toy for the Naljians

Gold and Diamonds (Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa):

To humans, finding a literal mountain of gold and egg-sized diamonds is a life-changing lottery win worth billions. To dehydrated wild animals facing a deadly drought, it's a massive disappointment. According to some internet calculations I found, those gold and diamonds Moto-moto dug up should be around $1.6-2.3B adjusted for current price.

The Kragle (The LEGO Movie):

To the citizens of the LEGO universe, it is an apocalyptic superweapon capable of freezing the entire world and stripping away their free will forever. To the human father in the real world, it’s just a cheap, dried-up tube of Krazy Glue he uses to stop his kid from messing up his hobby sets.

Day of the Dead Parade: In the James Bond film Spectre, a scene takes place during the fictional “Day of the Dead Parade” in Mexico City. Mexico City historically never had a parade on Day of the Dead but they liked the idea so much they turned the parade into a real annual event.

“One Piece At A Time” car: the famous Johnny Cash song “One Piece of a Time” tells the fictional story of an auto mechanic building an insane Frankenstein-esque car out of pieces he stole from work over three decades. Years later someone actually built the car described in the song using parts from all the different years.

Southern Operations Room: The Syrian insurgent group (now part of the government) took their logo from a fictional insurgent group in the game Command and Conquer.

Avatar: The Seven Heavens - Without going into spoilers, beyond what the trailers have already shown, the Avatar, who should be a symbol of guidance and unity for the world, is now seen as a destructive god responsible for the cataclysm that devastated the world

The SCP Foundation - In the canon of "The World Keeps Turning" Franklin Cho is the current O5-1, a position traditionally reserved for the chairman of the O5 Council, the leaders of the SCP Foundation. Given that in this canon the anomalies suddenly disappeared and the Foundation was dismantled shortly afterwards, it is just a man stuck in the past who refuses to let the Foundation die, trying to keep things running at Site-01 (like SCiPnet) as best he can and studying what he believes is an anomalous piano.

Dragon Ball - Vegeta is the prince of the Saiyans, some of whom were proud warriors and conquerors; given that he is one of the few who remain after the destruction of his world, that title isn't worth much, and by the time he's introduced to us, he's just another soldier in the army of the Great Emperor Frieza.

Personality [Terrifying Trope] He was a SERIAL KILLER who bragged about KILLING PEOPLE

Thumbnail

i love characters who were SERIAL KILLERS, who bragged about KILLING PEOPLE, and professed and confessed to be DEMONS.

Adam Smasher (Cyberpunk 2077 / Edgerunners). Adam Smasher is a heavily modified cyborg mercenary who works for the Arasaka Corporation and has spent decades killing people for money. he enjoys killing so much that he specifically demands civilian casualties and collateral damage as part of his contracts. he considers ordinary humans inferior and has absolutely no problem murdering innocent people. in Edgerunners, he arrives to stop David and his crew, crushes Rebecca to death, then tears apart David’s cyberskeleton before killing him.

Krombopulos Michael (Rick and Morty). Michael is an alien assassin who regularly buys weapons from Rick to carry out contract killings. when Rick introduces him to Morty, Michael explains that he’s an assassin and gives Morty his business card in case he ever needs someone murdered. he admits that he has absolutely no code of ethics and will kill anyone, including children, animals and elderly people, before telling them how much he loves killing. after buying an antimatter gun to assassinate an alien being held in captivity, he says “Oh boy, here I go killing again!” before heading off to complete the job.

Melon (Beastars). Melon is a leopard gazelle hybrid and serial killer who enjoys murdering people and manipulating those around him. He poses as a therapist for elephants, gaining their trust before killing them for their valuable tusks. As a child, he pushed several classmates off a school roof and later murdered his own mother by beating her with a hot iron. He eventually becomes the leader of the Shishigumi, a criminal organisation he controls through violence and intimidation. He openly admits to Yahya that he murdered his mother, joking that his father is probably still running away from her in heaven. He also tries to murder Legoshi after pretending to cooperate with him.

Hated Tropes [Frustratingly mixed trope:] "You've saved all of us! ...now Fuck Off"

Thumbnail
gallery
1.9k Upvotes

in which the hero is kicked out or banished by the people they've worked to save, oftentimes after saving them numerous times.

Buffy gets kicked out of her own fucking house:

Following a pretty nasty defeat, Buffy the Vampire Slayer (near the end of season SEVEN) gets ripped a new asshole by her friends and peers for a number of dubiously justified reasons in a scene that feels very... out of character for many of those present, including Buffy's own little sister. theres a much larger argument about her leadership, but ultimately Xander (Joss Whedon's self insert and thus the Voice of God) basically tells Buffy to get out. Of her own home. that she owns. and that everyone else lives in rent-free. and it works.

this scene is the worst written on the list imo, and to this day its still really, really contentious within the fanbase for being an excessive humiliation ritual for Buffy, who at that point had saved the world and her friends lives (and offered them immense grace for their own mistakes) several times over.

The Lone Wanderer is exiled by Amata:

Fallout 3 begins with you having to flee the Vault you grew up in and escape into the Wasteland. Sometime later in the game, Amata, your childhood friend, contacts you and asks for your help since the Vault has since descended into chaos and outright warfare. You do, and you have any number of options of resolving the conflict, but all of them end in you being asked politely (or not so politely) to leave. Amata becomes the leader of the Vault, and recognizes that you're an extremely controversial and hated figure within it, even though you helped save them, so even in the most peaceful, saintly route she gives you the boot.

Its a pretty nasty surprise and feels like a betrayal (and it kinda is), but theres some nuance to her exiling you. Firstly, if you choose the violent route she's completely right to boot you, but if you're diplomatic about resolving the conflict, Amata is now in a position where she has to prioritize the entire Vault's populace over someone she loves personally. Its not a spiteful decision, and she does clarify that things will probably change once things have finally calmed down. I think she's justified, but it still feels like youre being tossed out like trash after she doesnt need you anymore.

Korra gets banished from Republic City by President Raiko:

A politically motivated example, but a really egregious one. After the fiasco at the climax of s2 involved the fucking Avatar Antichrist pulling up and trying to doom the world to a (technically destined and supposed to happen) literal 10,000 years of darkness, Korra successfully saves the world from that fate, but at both great personal cost, as well as damage to the city--primarily through the opening of a portal to the Spirit world, which causes the spirit world to bleed into the metropolitan city.

As to what this means, literally, a bunch of semi-sentient "spirit vines" start growing into the city, damaging homes and blocking streets. people are made homeless and nothing seems to be effective at dealing with this magic kudzu. Even spirit-bending the vines just makes them regrow even angrier. Korra accepts that maybe there's nothing to be done about the vines, as her role as Avatar means balancing the spirit world with the physical as well, and severing the connection between the worlds is inherently not right.

Problem is, both Korra and President Raiko are tanking in approval ratings. Sure, maybe on some cosmic level this is somehow meant to be, but people are still losing their homes. Out of both personal resentment for Korra (whom he had a fraught relationship with due to not lending her home aid against their invaders) as well as an attempt to save his own skin and chances of winning the next election, Raiko fucking exiles Korra from Republic city. Did i mention she had saved him personally from being kidnapped? like twice? and later saves him from assassination?

As a final note, his ploy doesnt even work, as by the time of the sequel comic, Raiko has an approval rating of negative 3 percent, meaning everyone in the city and then some hate him.

Queen Galfrey strips you of your Rank: (Pathfinder: wrath of the righteous)

long story short, the Queen of Mendev, a nation thats in a Forever War with a demonic invasion, finds out you have some mysterious power that lets you deliver a decisive blow to the demon forces and appoints you Knight-Commander of a new Crusade. This drops a shit load of responsibility on your shoulders, but she gives you a pretty long leash to handle the problem as you see fit, effectively shang-hai-ing you into the position while also serving as your angel investor.

near the end of the Crusade, after a massive blow has been dealt to the demons (by you) and the good guys are in the home stretch, she will always, always try and strip you of your rank.

Given this is a massive 150 hour RPG, the reasons why she does this vary based on your choices. Sometimes she is extremely justified--like if you're on the Lich or Demon paths, which entail raising all your dead crusaders as zombies to continue the fight, inviting vampire courts and death priests into your city, and building a massive necromantic Aztec pyramid just off Main Street. Or Demon, in which you fight fire with fire, but are gradually getting visibly more demonic and turning the Crusade into a demon civil war. She's just flat out correct to do so in this instance, triply so if you've been experimenting with replacing people's brains with bees in your spare time.

More neutral paths are a bit more gray, which have you be a reality warping agent of chaos/law, gradually becoming increasingly insane from her perspective but still being very effective. the chaos path, Trickster, has her positively furious that you've turned their holy war into a giant fucking circus, while the lawful Aeon is getting more and more Lawful Stupid and executing or imprisoning people out of a loss of any sense of nuance (you're trying to get powerful enough to alter the entire timeline, so while these sacrifices are temporary from your perspective, you're becoming a weirdly alien tyrant in Galfrey's)

The good paths are where things get messy. Her motivations for firing your ass at the finish line still have some justified reasoning: no one knows where your power comes from, you're getting so strong that virtually no one can stop you, and no one really knows about your origins, rendering you a growing risk in her eyes. The fact you also have a literal Succubus as a bestie (who you might be romancing) really, REALLY doesnt help. the problem is that she's also growing increasingly jealous of you. She's been waging this war for 100 years, and you're upstaging her hard. She's scared and jealous and bitter, but both the Angel and the Aeon have a pretty easy time convincing her to back down. To her credit, its only a couple of speech checks and having your angel buddy back you up to keep your position.

The most egregious is the Azata path, (chaotic good Power of Friendship and Mischief) because just like the Angel, you're still a heroic agent of good and hope, but unlike the Angel, you're a bit of a loose cannon. During the siege that leads to you getting stripped of rank, the Azata gets the unique option to ignore her command to wait for her arrival and instead get the jump on the demons. Galfrey is justified in being angry with your flagrant disregard for her authority, but she's also extremely bitter about how you succeeded without her at all--you made her feel un-needed, leading to her being at her worst and stripping you of your title largely out of spite.

Furthering the irritation on almost all routes, the very next task on your to-do list is go to giga-hell to shut down a demonic production of magic crystals (long story) that no one really expects you to come back from. If you keep your title this becomes a semi-martyrization and heroic plunge into the Abyss, but on Azata specifically she berates you, fires you, and then you have to go to giga-hell anyways.

(i personally quite like Galfrey. i think she's a very nuanced and interesting character, but Azata is the most popular path and shes the least justified there, so i understand why most of the fanbase hates her guts.)

miscellaneous (Loved Fight Scene Trope) Saying "Get Up" While Curbstomping An Enemy So You Can Keep Beating Them Up

Thumbnail
gallery
1.6k Upvotes

When a character is in the process of beating the ever loving hell out of another character, inevitably knocking them to the ground. And then, instead of leaving them like that, simply orders them to get back up so they can keep beating the hell out of them.

Example 1: Horus Heresy: Betrayer. Kharn, upon learning that Erebus murdered his friend Argel Tal, proceeds to track Erebus down to a fighting arena, and upon challenging to a duel to the death, proceeds to curbstomp Erebus multiple times while telling him "Get Up". The result is Erebus losing a hand and only surviving by teleporting away at the last second.

Example 2: Saints Row 2: Johnny Gat is evidently less than happy upon having Shogo Akugi kill his girlfriend and then trying to ambush Gat at said girlfriend's funeral. After the player knocks Akugi off his bike and brings him to Gat, Gat proceeds to lay him out with one punch before telling Akugi to "Get Up." He then breaks Akugi's leg before telling a pleading Akugi to "Get Up" once again. And finally mercilessly beat down Akugi a third time, smashing his head through a tombstone before burying Akugi alive.

Those were the only two examples of this I could think of, but it's a visceral enough thing to see in a fight scene that I was curious about other examples of this happening.

Characters [Interesting Trope] The Adaption Changes The Relationship Between Characters

Thumbnail
gallery
1.3k Upvotes

The relationship could be platonic, romantic or even siblings but the adaptation changes it into something else or just downplays the relationship, or even just have the character attitudes towards each other change, it’s just interesting to see what changes were made for the story

My Adventures With Superman:

In the show, they are portrayed as both friendly rivals and an idol with Lois looking up to Vicki and her long lasting career, where in the comics they have rarely interacted with each other and with Lois generally being the more famous and prolific,

Cyberpunk 2077:

In the game, the relationship is portrayed as a more on and off friends with benefits or casual dating with them having a complicated relationship that may not work out, where in Cyberpunk, they were a firmly established couple, I used two images of the individual as I couldn’t find a good image of both, also to probably sell the divide more

Cosmic Princess Kaguya!:

In the movie, the relationship between Kaguya and Iroha is a major part of the story and the Akira and Kaguya one is treated not as seriously, where in the manga downplays the ship tease between Kaguya and Iroha but adds some between Kaguya and Akira

(Mainly the reason I’m doing this as I just finished the movie recently, it was either this or talking about unique adaptations of classic stories)

  • Ray Bradbury (Fahrenheit 451) spent years of his life telling people that his story wasn't primarily about government censorship, rather he was writing it because he was worried the television will fry people's attention spans and make them not read books. This reached the point when during a lecture at UCLA, he walked out in frustration because fans kept insisting they understood "the true meaning" of his work.

  • Vince Gilligan and his crew (Breaking Bad) admitted in interviews that the hyper-specific visual connections fans "discovered" week-to-week in theory and analysis videos and threads were either complete accidents or simply logistical necessities on set.

Malcolm in the Middle Life's Still Unfair: In the short revival of the show, Hal is having trouble sorting his feelings since his anniversary with Lois is coming up and she forbade him to do any thing (in contrast to his normally outlandish romantic gestures) so that she could plan the whole thing and give HIM a worthy celebration; in addition discovering that all the "quality" time he recently spent with his son Reese was nothing but a cruel ploy to record him in embarrassing situations and upload them for the world to see. Due to this he finds himself heartbroken, unstable and even sexually frigid (something that is not normal for him). His friend recommends a small "clinic" for micro dosing with hallucinogens ran by Richie the town's resident junkie, which could help him look into himself and sort his feelings. Before Richie can explain the whole process, Hal swallows the entire bowl of pills (a dose he describes is enough for 15 elephants). Hal is then locked in a room with a chair and a bucket and proceeds to wriggle naked for a whole day, suffer ego death and come out as a calm and more understanding man.

Fiction: Twin Turbo's victory using her signature breakaway style during Umamusume Season 2; she might not have won a Grade 1 race, let alone be anywhere near the legends of the turf, but her hustle was enough to motivate Tokai Teio and reignite her spirit for racing

Real life: Johann Zarco became the first French motorcycle racer to win on home soil in 71 years, while at the presence of his parents in the paddock; he was never a title contender, nor a race winning threat, but this single win meant the world to him

  • Brienne of Tarth (Game of Thrones)

Tall, muscular, and covered up to her neck in plate armor. Game of Thrones did Brienne justice in terms of her visual appearance for the show, and I'd argue she stayed true in terms of writing to the very end as well despite other characters losing their uniqueness.

  • Shield Maidens (Vikings)

Lagertha and the shield maidens from the TV show Vikings wear light chainmail and leather armor, with a sword and shield aiding them in their ability to protect themselves. Despite the show's historical inaccuracies, this is one thing I find to be very satisfactory.

  • Apollyon (For Honor)

Truthfully all of the armored women in For Honor fit this trope, but Apollyon is perhaps the only one that has such thorough protection. Even the most lightly armored warrior in For Honor is covered up to their neck, and the majority are armored above that.

  • Albedo (Overlord)

For a series that is known for it's fanservice, most of the female characters don't actually have skimpy armor and instead wear practical armor sets. Albedo is perhaps the most surprising example, as her default outfit is barely an outfit at all and rather rags attempting to cover what little they can. Meanwhile her combat armor is a complete plate set from head to toe.

  • Kisara (Tales of Arise)

In a game series also known for impractical female armor, Kisara is covered up to her neck in royal plate armor, and she wields a shield as tall as her and a sword to aid it.

  • Brigitte Lindholm (Overwatch)

Overwatch is a mixed bag for this trope, though Brigitte meanwhile is a squire to Reinhardt that has excellent armor in some of her cosmetics/skins.
