My mother grew up very poor in the 50s, so she would go thrifting with her mom. Most people only used thrift stores at that time. If they were indeed very poor. My mother met my father as teenagers and then got married. He made good money and my mother did not need to go thrift shopping anymore out of necessity, but she still did it anyways.
So when I was a kid in the 80s, I used to be so excited when mom would take me to goodwill, despite knowing that it was for poor people..., (according to society). But I couldn't believe all this cool stuff was donated because people didn't want it anymore. And now I could pick it up for .25 cents.
As an adult in my late 40s, I have used thrift store shopping since high school in the 90s and have used it to decorate any new space I move into. I use it for gift shopping. 90% of what I own is secondhand. I love having something unique... i have a really eclectic wardrobe, and I get a lot of compliments on it. I tell them it takes years of thrifting, to collect enough, really cool pieces to have a fantastic, put together wardrobe because it it's all mis-matched from different decades and unique rare pieces.
I prefer to help the planet. Not purchasing more things. You're saving money is the biggest bonus. It's a fun hobby because many people enjoy tinkering around looking at all kinds of mixed up odds and ends that are available for sale that have a history before you even got to them.
I have a maximalist, home, and when you come in, it's like walking into a curiosity shop, Its decades of collecting treasures...I love it's vibe and I've done it inexpensive and over time.
For The past 20 years, my 80 year old mom and I have gone thrifting weekly.
I'm curious what's your history with thrifting???
