We are dedicated to providing a supportive, empathetic, and practical place to talk about student loan debt and all the difficulties that often surround our debts.

That said we do not permit any type of debt shaming, personal attacks, insults, guilting, gaslighting, bullying, harassment, threats, intimidation, trolling, or otherwise attacking others / maliciously unhelpful commenting/behaviors. These will result in a permaban

This also includes statements about telling people to simply pay more, get a better job, trying to change the past (or asking why someone didn't make different past choices), or otherwise telling others how you would live their life. We're focused on the present here and on supporting people where they're at, not where you think they should be.

We also do not advocate for or allow "lender defenders" so to speak. It is one thing to provide useful practical information on how to fill out paperwork or loan paperwork questions, it's another to come and try to defend an industry that quite frankly is part of the reason many are feeling hopeless and stuck. We serve and protect borrowers' interests from a person first approach. We are not here to defend lenders or assist lenders.

Those with active affiliations to the loan industry must clearly identify themselves as such in any initial post or comment. We do not require disclosure of company name, names, or location, but a simple acknowledgement that you are affiliated with the loan industry is required. This is to prevent conflicts of interest and to ensure information provided to our users is given in the best interest of the user being replied to.

Additionally, due to the sensitive nature of the complexities of student loan debt, debt shaming culture, mental health considerations, and the intersection of these variables; we adhere to a very strict moderation policy.

We do this not seek to silence opinions but to provide a space where there is respect and careful consideration given to the difficulties individuals may be experiencing when seeking student loan support, feedback, advice, or information. Given the very real concerns, depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, hopelessness, shaming, and pressure that for some comes along with student loan debt, we will do everything in our power to ensure that users will be provided a safe environment to discuss student loan concerns and issues. Regardless of what those concerns may be given one's individual situation and experience.

The rules listed in the sidebar also apply at all times. Please do contact the mods promptly if any concerns arise.

Remember you are not your debt. There is nothing wrong with you for taking out loans or choosing your major/career/life goals. You are not somehow less of a person or undeserving of respect or compassion for having student loan debt. There is no shame wherever you are with your education, career, life, or student loan debt situation. We've got your back here.

My deadline to switch off SAVE is 11/9. Is there a reason I should be reluctant to sign up for this plan?

Post image

I make like 38k a year. I'm confused by this whole mess. Initially my instincts were to ride this out because I found it odd that the Feds weren't just kicking me off SAVE right away. It occurs to me that maybe there are legal challenges I'm not aware of that would render the government unable to actually kick us off SAVE. That said I've seen people saying they were kicked off and enrolled in the standard repayment plan automatically. I just haven't seen very many. Ive also seen people saying they got a 30 day extension, but that doesn't appear to be a guarantee even though the Feds appear to have said it is.

My instincts are now telling me to hedge my bets and take the IBR plan and just start making payments. RAP is $96 a month but goes until 2046, and I just don't really trust it because it's Republican's baby. IBR seems like the safest option. I just wanted input from other people that know more about this than I do. Do you think I'm making the right decision by applying for IBR? I just don't think that I'm willing to play chicken with the Federal government anymore.

My loans are in forbearance, but I keep getting told to pick a payment plan.

My loans are in forbearance until November 2029, but I keep getting emails and phone calls telling me that I need to set up a payment plan. Does this mean that, if I set up the payment plan now, it won't go in effect until the forbearance is up? I'm worried that if I choose a plan, then it will cancel out my forbearance and I'll have to start paying now (which I can't afford).

Mohela and PSLF Question

Looking for some advice on how to handle a recent change. For some context:

I've made roughly 100 payments towards PSLF and I'm on an IDR plan, which had my monthly payment at $36.19. I've made consistent payments every month and nothing has drastically changed with my salary (I'm a 5th grade teacher). Back in July, I got a message from Mohela stating that my monthly payment would increase to over $600 per month. I was miraculously able to get ahold of somebody to speak to to dispute the increase. They placed me on "administrative forbearance" while they looked into it. Through that time, I continued to make my $36.19 payments. The administrative forbearance period recently ended, and I've since gotten several different notes from Mohela with varying amounts listed as being owed. All in all, it seems as if my November payment will be in the $600+ amount. I haven't been able to get ahold of anybody that can give me more information... every time I call, I get rerouted a million times until I'm placed on a 5-hour hold or they auto hangup.

So my question... do I have any recourse in keeping my payment at a similar amount to the $36.19? I'm so close to my 120 payments but the jump to over $600 seems extreme. Can I keep making lower payments or will that defeat the purpose and not count towards my PSLF?

Any advice is much appreciated!

80k in student loans

• Upvotes

I'm in graduate school right now and when I graduate in 2028, I'll have about 80k in loans.

Right now I have about 56k. Out of the current amount, 56k is unsubsidized and 20k is subsidized.

I make about 60k a year right now and when I graduate I'll start working as a speech therapist and should be able to make at least 80k a year.

I don't even know where to start or when.

Devastated

I decided to go for a career with Keiser University. I signed up for my Associates Degree in 2009. Passed and got my diploma. The school promises that you’ll get a job with $13.00/hr pay or more. For 2009, that’s awesome. Jobs were hiring at $9/hr and was told time and time again that Medical Assistants don’t get paid much. So I decided to go back to school to further my education. I should’ve stopped there but all I could think was getting a Bachelor’s degree so that I could provide for my daughter.
I was one month away from graduating and getting my Bachelor’s degree but the school wouldn’t let me pass the last class. I asked for Tutoring as they offer free tutoring but the Tutor told me to “figure it out myself “. I tried getting outside tutoring but no one was available even reached out to the teacher and he wouldn’t answer my emails. I tried everything. Then I decided to continue my schooling elsewhere and finish with another school. THE CREDITS ARENT TRANSFERABLE!!! If I signed up to a new school, I’d have to start from scratch and still pay Keiser University. I reached out to the Education Department. They mentioned about a program that they had that was the Borrower’s to Defense. I applied and with time, all of my federal loans were canceled. But my private student loans for my Bachelor’s degree are still lingering. I have a part time job where I don’t make much money. I tried reaching out to Keiser University but they ignore me. Telling me that I must uphold the Promissory Note. But if my private loans aren’t attached to a course or a degree, what am I paying? Wouldn’t the school have to return that money? I need help. Please. I feel like I’m drowning.

Looking to hear from other's who have gone through the disability discharge route with either federal or private student loans

Hi everyone,

I was just wanting to see what others experiences have been when it comes to total and permanent disability discharge, whether private or federal. I am seeking this route as I have been unable to work due to multiple health conditions that I have and I was just hoping to hear what your experience was like applying, what the response was from your lender, and the outcome of the situation, if anyone is open to sharing whether they were successful or not. I do have probably over a thousand pages of medical records at this point if they needed them for any reason as supporting documents.

I also have both private and federal student loans.

Because I've not been able to work and my spouse has been helping me pay them, I feel really awful because I have quite a lot of debt in my name and I hate for them to be financially responsible for them forever (they are all in my name only, he is not a co-signer or anything). I attended school in the hopes of having a career and being able to contribute financially for both of us but that hasn't been the case for the last 2 years.

I appreciate y'all's time, thank you so much!

Question re: student loan tutor

I’m completely baffled by my student loans and am battling an illness so I don’t have the time or capacity to figure things out right now. I’m hoping to find someone to just manage all of it for me, so what money I do make isn’t garnished.

Someone recommended student loan tutor as they manage everything. I’m willing to pay on an income based repayment plan and after doing some digging it looks like this company gets loan payments to basically zero, by having you change a paycheck. Is this true? How is this legal? I’m confused, if a large company is doing this, it can’t be illegal, right? Due to liability?

I guess I’m just trying to understand all the options and was curious about opinions and experiences. I’ll probably see if I can find a cpa to help.

SAVE ENDING

I have been avoiding everything to do with my student loans. I know it’s terrible but I just get overwhelmed and frustrated. I just received an email from nelnet about my save repayment ending in 90days. What should I do? What plan do I pick? I did not finish college or graduate and I don’t make much in the current job I have.

Glad to hear representative Khanna is an ally in this, and it’s great to see him make a public statement! even the good guy seem to be brushing this issue under the rug, but millions of working families are about to have to choose between paying the electric bill, or groceries or sending money to Linda McMahon……and we vote!

Refinancing in the UK

Hi! Has anyone had any success refinancing their Prodigy Finance loan in the UK? I live and work in London on a skilled worker visa. I always thought Lendwise was an option but they rejected me saying I need Indefinite Leave to Remain - basically need to be a UK national! That is still far off for me. :( I see SoFi comes up but they are US residency only. If anyone knows of any other providers please let me know 🙏

Loans after obtaining Bachelors

Hello everyone, I was curious to know if I could still get any help from Fafsa once I obtain my first bachelor's degree? I have heard that the pell Grant, and I believe one of the other loans becomes unavailable. I was just wondering, just in case I decided to go back to school in the future.

Was on REPAYE and with Aidvantage, now can’t find records of my loans

Hi all! I began with Navient in 2009-2012, then had my loans switched over to Aidvantage within the last decade or so? I have no idea why it happened (they might have told me why at the time, but I can’t remember). All I know is I pay Aidvantage now instead of Navient. Cool cool cool.

Anyway it seems since I was on REPAYE that the Biden administration was set to forgive at least a partial amount of my loans. I received notice in the mail and have records downloaded, which show all my previous payments, loan forgivenesses, etc.

However, it seems StudentLoans.gov is listing my loans as unpaid. Fine, whatever. I know admin changed, so I wanted to look further into this—obviously—especially since some loans aren’t fully paid or forgiven yet.

Here is the issue. Even actual payments I’ve made towards my debts are nowhere to be found now. When I go to login to Aidvantage, it says my account does not exist. My previous login won’t work! I called and they cannot find me either.

So then I try to go to Aidvantage from StudentLoans.gov, and it brings me to a page saying that my Aidvantage loans are now being serviced by MOHELA. Well, I can’t find an account over with MOHELA either?

Essentially, the loans showing on StudentLoans.gov won’t actually bring up the accounts, and loans that need to still be paid off currently show they are in forbearance.

So who do I contact from here or has this happened to anyone else? I don’t know what the heck is happening, though I am glad I saved records of my previous payments. I was considering not touching my REPAYE plan until they forced it themselves (switched me onto a different plan), but I can’t even find the servicer now?

Also, I never received notice that Aidvantage switched me to MOHELA. I literally have emails from over the summer sent from Aidvantage—and now it seems I don’t exist? Which is obviously not true, but what gives?
