šŸ“° News Elon Musk's SpaceX Gets US Contract to Expand Ukraine’s Access to Starshield (2024)

Article from 2024. Many people on this subreddit seem unaware of or are deliberately spreading capricious lies that Ukraine did not have nor ever had access to Starshield, the military version of Starlink which SpaceX describes as "Secured satellite network for government entities".

From the article:

"The contract means that 2,500 Starlink terminals already in Ukraine will get access to Starshield, a classified and encrypted signal over Starlink that’s more difficult to hack into or jam. That number is in addition to the 500 that were previously connected to Starshield.

ā€œA total of 3,000 terminals are provided service via the two contracts,ā€ according to a statement to Bloomberg News from the Space Systems Command’s Commercial Satellite Office. The contracts share a common purpose ā€œto facilitate internet connectivity in Ukraine,ā€ it said. ā€œBoth provide service into 2025.ā€

Ukraine has access to both Starshield and Starlink.

https://www.nytimes.com/2026/10/22/us/politics/starshield-outage-ukraine-musk-trump.html

While Ukraine uses both Starlink and Starshield for internet connection on the battlefield, its leaders say that Starshield is particularly vital because it offers clearer communication at faster speeds than Starlink, along with higher security.

Furthermore, Starshield is not a completely separate network from Starlink, despite having some of its own satellites. The U.S. Space Force has confirmed that Starshield operates over the broader Starlink network:

ā€œThe Space Systems Command Commercial SATCOM Communications Office procures Starshield Global Access services over the Starlink Satellites/network,ā€ a spokesperson for Space Systems Command told FedScoop.Ā

https://fedscoop.com/starlink-outage-impacted-starshield-its-defense-communications-service/

Also, see this:

Who controls the Starshield accounts that Ukraine is using?

The U.S. government owns the physical Starshield satellite constellation that SpaceX operates, but that isn’t the infrastructure that Ukrainian forces are using. Troops there use a kind of ā€œStarshield as a serviceā€ā€”infrastructure owned and controlled by SpaceX.

ā“ Question About to cancel Starlink for TMobile 5g internet

12 Upvotes

Just curious of any other thoughts. I have TM 5g now at my main residence and at my student child’s rental in Colorado. It has been great and cheap.
I have Starlink at my lake house in a highly rural area as I had no other option originally than HughesNet (terrible) I was an early Starlink customer and only real complaint is frequent outages in heavy rain (Texas gulf coast).

I noticed last week that Tmobile 5g upgraded near me. Download speed over 1500 mbps on phone and now about 1000 Mbps in 2 week trial via router.

Starlink speeds have degraded some over 3 1/2 yrs of usage. I sometimes get over 400 Mbps still but usually around 200 Mbps. Starlink has raised monthly cost over time from $105 to now $130. Tmobile cost expected for their middle tier around $60.

I expect to change as this will pay back Starlink hardware in about 6-7 months and be more than half cost going forward.

Any others see similar reason to cancel Starlink?

šŸ“¦ Starlink Kit Starlink Mini Kit delays

3 Upvotes

Anyone else order a starlink mini kit this month? (Or last) I’ve been waiting a few weeks now for it to ship, no tracking updates and just keeps kicking my delivery back another week once it reaches the end of my estimated delivery window.

It’s frustrating to order this specifically for the purpose of a trip and totally whiff on timing. Any luck cancelling unfulfilled orders and going to Best Buy for pick up?

Caso eu pague a starlink mini, vai dar conta do recado?

Se não for, o que é necessÔrio fazer ou pagar? Pois o standard é caro, deixa só idealizar os valores em comparação:

* Starlink mini 15000mt;

*Starlink standard 25000mt;

*Router mesh pequeno 4500mt;

*Routers normais(TP link e outros) bons nesse caso, 6000mt(max);

Eu jÔ calculei os valores de cada orçamento ( de cada situação), mas quero vosso ponto de vista.

*Starlink mini+router mesh=19500mt

*Starlink mini+router normal=21000mt

ā“ Question For those who used to have Xfinity, how much difference does the switch make?!

3 Upvotes

No matter where you live in the country, was wondering about whether or not this is an upgrade from the fiber based model that most people have been using for ages now. Are there really technological advancements going over to this brand or will it repeat the same pattern as live TV with the satellite vs cable situation??

šŸ’¬ Discussion Urgent appeal to Starlink: Support connectivity in Libya by officially opening service and halting geofencing restrictions

• Upvotes

Hello everyone, As many of you know, people in Libya face severe connectivity challenges due to fragile local telecommunications and frequent power outages. For countless freelancers, students, families, and remote workers, Starlink has become a vital lifeline rather than a luxury. Recently, strict roaming and regional restrictions have put many users at risk of sudden disconnections, threatening their access to basic work, education, and global communication. We have launched a petition urging Starlink and SpaceX to officially support Libya, approve legitimate access, and lift restrictions on existing kits currently keeping communities connected. Please take a moment to sign and share the petition to help our voices reach the Starlink team: https://c.org/sXYMgpGDVL Your signature and upvote mean a lot to us. ā“ Question Massachusetts - outages / challenges?

1 Upvotes

Our current internet provider is experiencing outages more frequently than ever before. Seemingly without warning and non-weather dependent. Unfortunately, we live in an area with only the single option (outside Starlink)

For folks in New England/Northeast, what type of outages do you experience, if any?

We are a WFH family so outages are damaging to our professional lives.

Thank you for your time,

ā“ Question suggestion for true global phone

0 Upvotes

Is there a way for Starlink to come up with a true global mobile plan?

I travel as a missionary and spend time in different countries. I would love to have one Starlink mobile plan that works across countries without needing to change SIM cards, purchase local plans, or deal with complicated international roaming arrangements.

Such a service would be extremely valuable to international travelers, missionaries, businesspeople, and anyone who regularly moves between countries.

I believe a simple, reliable global phone plan could be an exciting next step for Starlink.

Customer would not have to do anything as they travel.Ā  Starlink does the work behind the scenes as customers move from country to country.Ā

ā“ Question Is Starlink good for gaming and streaming?

0 Upvotes

I’m considering getting Starlink because my only internet option is satellite internet with around 30 Mbps download and 10 Mbps upload, but it’s unstable and too laggy for streaming.

Would Starlink be reliable enough to stream on Kick while playing online games? Is it worth the money? I’d appreciate real experiences from Starlink users. Thanks!

šŸ“¶ Starlink Speed Starling giving me giving me 150-900ping despite normal speed tests.

I’ve had Starlink for around a month or two and I’m on one of the more expensive packages.
I was already having connection problems, so last Friday someone came out to supposedly ā€œfixā€ it. It clearly isn’t fixed.
My Starlink speed test can show 111 Mbps download, 18 Mbps upload and 22ms latency, which looks completely normal.
But when gaming, especially Fortnite, my ping randomly spikes to around 400–900ms, sometimes with packet loss as well. Earlier Fortnite showed 469ms ping, 2% download packet loss and 7% upload packet loss.
Normally I’d expect roughly 30–35ms on the Europe servers.
That’s what I don’t understand. The Starlink test can say 22ms while the actual connection during gaming becomes completely unusable.
Considering I’m paying for one of the more expensive packages and already had someone come out to ā€œfixā€ it last Friday, this is getting ridiculous.
Has anyone had this issue with Starlink? What should I be checking to figure out what’s causing these massive spikes?
Screenshots attached.

šŸ’¬ Discussion 1 year into starlink, good internet but wow the equipment is awful

0 Upvotes

As the title says.. I’ve had 2 satellite dish just randomly stop working, took 1 month for both replacements. Now my router just randomly stopped working, it’s going on 1 month for a replacement for that as well. It sucks cause I get great speeds and happy with the product but it’s always breaking down. Has this happened to anyone else? I pretty much rv full time cause of work, anybody know of any alternatives?
