Meta r/StarWars Official Watch Order Discussion Thread

So we haven't had an official watch order discussion thread in many years, so we figure its time to update the one in the FAQ. There are various other links in the FAQ, the Wookieepedia timeline of canon media, and various other discussion threads and topics over the years including a link to just searching the sub which people find challenge apparently. Also as a reminder, the Wookieepedia timeline of canon media can be sorted via the table on that page by release order or chronologically (if you decide to go that route).

A lot of the new Disney+ content brings new eyes to Star Wars all the time, and new movies will eventually too. We want to get a bit more aggressive with automod removals and referrals to the FAQ for these questions about watch order. So let's hash it out here in the comments. We will sticky this for a while and eventually it will just be linked in the FAQ along with the other topics and maybe in the sidebar too. And like some of other stickies about rules, spoilers, and new episode discussion guidelines, we may trot out this link and sticky it from time to time.

As a general rule the sub typically recommends for new viewers to watch in release order, especially for the movies. This is the semi-consensus from the fandom, and you will routinely see this as the most upvoted and posted response.

With that being said what we would like to do here also discuss other options, and possible orders to also toss in the TV media as well. Should you watch Andor first and then Rogue One before the OT? Should movies like Solo be done in release order or chronological? Should you watch The Clone Wars TV show before the PT? So on and so forth...

So lets have a solid discussion about this and make it a solid resource for those who may be new to Star Wars.

I’m not particularly into Star Wars itself, but my bff is in a guild and he can swoop one of his many light sabers around like a fucking ninja.
I’ve seen the original 3 a handful of times and fell in love with the Jawas.
I’m a 6’ woman, so not the perfect costume, but I could NOT be a Jawa! 🥰

What’s a jawa’s favorite pasta? Linguini
What’s a jawa’s favorite swimsuit? Bikini
What’s a Jawa’s favorite vegetable? Zucchini

TV Jon Watts Was Working On A Secret "Western-Style" 'Star Wars' TV Series Before Being Tapped To Direct Episode X (EXCLUSIVE)

The series had a full writers’ room hired in January and ran through August of this year. The series was going to be 8 episodes long. Skeleton Crew co-creator Christopher Ford (Spider-Man: Homecoming) and Watts were developing it as a “western” series, much like how Skeleton Crew was a swashbuckling pirate adventure set in the Star Wars universe. It’s unclear whether the series was put on the back burner while he works on Episode X and will be picked up later, or if it’s been quietly canceled.

Fan Creations Pumpkin contest results!

Post image

Ok, well to start off I did not win.

I'm honestly really bummed about today. I honestly don't care about winning. I had fun making it. I made it for me. But I'm bummed bc this years contest just didn't hit like previous years. I can't remember the reason for it but there was no contest last year. And I think that absence really hurt. Bc in the last 2 years we've added a lot of staff that weren't really familiar with the contest. And a woman named Peg who was renowned for this contest retired. So there didn't end up being that many over the top entries like we usually have. Also, this is a resident clinic. Residency in family practice is 3 years. So 2/3rds of the residents had never seen the contest. So most of the entries were honestly really basic. There were 3 entries that were really good. Actually 4 but i'll get to that. There was a witch that wasn't bad at all. And the other really great entry was the winner. Two girls at the clinic are best friends and they were roommates until recently. So they made theirs together, and as a scene. It came out really well and they deserved to win.

What I think bothered me the most was that they gave me an award for "most creative". Which kinda feels like "Well there was two really good entries and we don't want one to feel like they lost". But I would have preferred to just lose lol. It's kind of like a participation trophy. And if they were going to give me an award, most creative was wrong bc theirs was definitely more creative.

So I'm sorry bc I was so looking forward to this post and when I saw the pumpkins (before the contest was judged) I was thinking "damn it, I'm gonna let like 7k people down on reddit". All I can say is normally it's got way more good entries. Maybe next year will pick up again now that people have seen. We'll see. I would like to thank everyone for all the really nice things they said. And idk who that one guy was that was really making sure I knew he hated my pumpkin, but that guy will be pretty happy with the result lol.

I hope you all have a great weekend. Here are a couple of pictures of all of the submissions. And the winner is the two puffer fishes.

General Discussion Anyone else feel like Jango Fett is an incredibly important character to the lore of Star Wars, yet rarely gets any recognition?

Post image
299 Upvotes

He's the template for the entire Clone Army, there's literally millions of him around the galaxy decades after he dies, he was considered the greatest bounty hunter in the galaxy while he was active, managed to go toe-to-toe with Obi-Wan, yet despite it all he's rarely brought up. He never gets a single flashback scene in the Clone Wars show and you can probably count on one hand the amount of times his name is said, the Clones don't seem to care for the fact he fought for the Separatists, none of the Jedi seem to care that their army is a Clone of a man fighting for the other side, he gets basically no new media at all and hasn't been in a show or video game in ages, like what am I missing here? I know Boba is obviously way more popular but surely Jango deserves some love too, right?

General Discussion Super stoked that Ahmed Best got to return to Star Wars as Master Kelleran Beq. He absolutely deserved a turn as a badass, and holy hell did he deliver.

After seeing him in action in The Mandalorian, I'm torn between wanting to see more of his character as Beq, or leaving it as it is. He's such a formidable Jedi in combat, I'd love to see more, but I also don't want his character to be overused as so many others have. Sometimes a little mystery is good. That said, I think there's some opportunity for Favreau to wrap up his storyline in an appropriate (and probably heartbreakingly heroic) way if we get another season of The Mandalorian. I also wouldn't mind if they did more written material with him!

How did you feel when you saw the episode about the Ghorman Massacre? I remember—I don't know—it really left a mark on me; I knew the Empire was ruthless, but right then... that was when I realized just how savage they were.

Movies Timeline of how Count Dooku was a last minute idea and the crazy sith concepts that came before him

Count Dooku as we know him actually didn’t exist at all until Lucas cast Christopher Lee in spring of 2000. This casting sidelined previous, completely different sith ideas created for Episode 2 between the weeks before Episode 1 and early 2000. See detailed timeline below!

.

Reference material:

The Art of Attack Of The Clones (video showcase) page 110-119, with the character development timeline corroborated by an info-heavy casting leak about the shape-shifter character, presented through two Aintitcool blog posts:

Star Wars Archives I-III (video showcase) page 330-331, with Sith Lordess concept art dated May 12, 1999.

  • Imgur and Pinterest hosts with higher resolution of May 12 concept art.

.

Dooku’s origin and full timeline

The search for the new sith for Episode 2 is described as a “yearlong journey”. The earliest sketch for a new sith for Episode 2 is Iain McCaig’s “Sith Lordess” dated May 12, 1999, the week before Episode 1. The official Lucasfilm announcement for the casting of Christopher Lee came 14 months later on July 11, 2000, a couple of weeks before Episode 2 started filming.

When development for this role started, the sith character seems to have been a completely blank slate. The concept artists pitched at least visual ideas to Lucas who changed the direction every other month.

“We tried everything possible for the sith. We ranged across the board from android to Hannibal Lecter.” - Iain McCaig

The concepts shown and described in concept art books can be summarized on this approximate timeline:

May 1999

  • Female sith
  • Female sith Medusa style
  • Female sith warrior
  • Female cyborg sith
  • Female sith Ventress-like
  • Witch sith

August 1999

  • More cyborgs

Late 1999 – Early 2000

  • Male shape shifter

This character is described by McCaig as “a shape shifter that would literally move around between sexes and races and all kinds of things”. This is corroborated by a casting leak from Japan that describes an evil shape-shifting character bossing over hired assassins. The leak also describes a solid contract for the Japanese actor to feature in both Episode 2 and 3. The leak was posted on April 17, 2000, so the timeline matches. The concept must have been a serious contender for a long time with actual auditions taking place sometime between New Year’s and April.

Spring 2000 - final concepts

  • Old female sith
  • Concept based on Christopher Lee

At this time, Lucas had moved away from Shape-shifter being the big bad. Lucas said that he would pick either McCaig’s final "old female sith" concept or “a completely different character based on Christopher Lee”. Lee was eventually cast and the choice was made.

Character merging

Despite being out of the running for main villain, it’s plausible that parts of the Shape-shifter concept was instead transferred to other new characters. Zam Wessel, Jango Fett’s assassin, is a shape-shifter.

Speculation can also point to Dooku’s name simply being inherited from his Japanese predecessor. In Episode 2, Zam and Jango both use weapons involving poison (venomous bugs and a poison dart). If similar weapons were used by the assassins in the timeline when they were hired by the Shapeshifter, the weapons of choice may be connected to their employer. Doku (毒) is Japanese for “poison” (although Doku (独) also means “single” or “alone”, also a fitting theme for the rogue jedi we meet in Dooku).

One of the poisonous weapons themselves could possibly be traced back to the person at the top of the chain of command by looking at its design and Dooku’s ship. The drone carrying the venomous bugs is of similar design as the ship. However, it’s possible that the design was just inspired by already finished ship designs without much afterthought.

Confirmed in the reference books is how Dooku's curved lightsaber was inherited from one of the first female sith concepts. The first "Sith Lordess" sketch obviously inspired the jedi Shaak-Ti, and the early cyborg designs may have inspired General Grevious's design for Episode 3.

Conclusion

What we know from the timeline is that there was always supposed to be a villain in Episode 2 in a relatively minor role. The villain was working with assassins from at least late 1999 with the Shapeshifter concept, and was supposed to survive Episode 2.

With how the sith character shifted wildly between concepts, they were probably always intended to have a rather short-lived role and no meaningful character arc. The character was probably always meant to work in the background of Episode 2 and be introduced towards the middle/end of the movie, probably with a lightsaber duel and be killed early in Episode 3. Since the first concept sketch for the character is dated to before Episode 1 premiered, the character likely has little to do with the rewrites in response to the Episode 1 backlash.

Parts of scrapped concepts eventually made it into the final film. This includes Count Dooku's lightsaber design, jedi Shaak-Ti, Zam Wessel's shapeshifting and maybe even Dooku's name.

Movies Visited the new George Lucas Museum of Narrative Art….

Post image

A massive museum experience. The Star Wars-related stuff was relatively small compared to the rest of the museum, but I had zero complaints.

This place was full of all the things I’ve always loved: 20th century illustration art (Pyle, Flagg, Leyendecker, Rockwell), comic book art (Jack Kirby, Neal Adams, etc), Frank Frazetta paintings, and a bunch of other delightful things. I stood before a self portrait by Frida Kahlo, and then walked right around the edge of the wall and came face to face with original Mad magazine cover paintings.

There was a point when my wife and I had to take a break and go sit down in the cafe downstairs before returning to continue. It took us almost six hours to experience.

There was a moment when I thought we were wrapping it up, and then I looked ahead and realized there was more rooms up ahead. It was almost overstimulating.

When we were done, we went out into the garden and sat down by the lifesize sculpture of Jabba the Hutt being strangled by Leia, where I thought about how I had just seen the original Millennium Falcon model and landspeeder and couldn’t believe it still.

I’ll be going back for sure.

I had a strange feeling while I was there, and I couldn’t quite define it. It was a sort of melancholy feeling. I think it’s because I realized that it’s all gone; all the things that are in there are part of something that’s gone. When you realize that what you love is now in a museum, you kinda feel like you are too.

EDIT: Check out my video on youtube for setup help @jaffaquake!

Original: I made my own custom mapper for my flight sticks which converted them into controls similar to Star Wars: Racer Arcade.

Ended up updating it over the last week to support more gear including standard HOTAS, rudder/driving pedals, driving wheels and handbrakes. Been a ton of fun to use :)

General Discussion Alternate Rebellion Symbols

Post image
8 Upvotes

One of my favorite tropes in Star Wars is seeing alternate designs for the Rebel Star Bird, and I’d like to see more of them anyone know any good examples?

Cannon, legends, or even jsut fan art?

I love seeing the variants

Like the starbird in Rebels, The Trident in Andor and more. What do you all think about them?
