All Snake ID Requests Should Be Submitted to /r/WhatsThisSnake

Hi everyone! I wanted to let you know that we're now going to redirect all Snake ID requests to the curated place for them, /r/whatsthissnake. As /r/snakes and /r/whatsthissnake have developed side by side we find ourselves in a position where we are running two parallel subreddits, but with slightly different rules. We hope is that this streamline into WhatsThisSnake will be gentle - we don't want a snake to go unidentified because we're learning how best to handle IDs. There is going to be a transition period where we still get a lot of ID requests here, so please do your part to kindly help !redirect people in need and by reporting jokes, misinformation and other problematic comments.

This spring Reddit is more popular than ever and it is hard for the moderation team to keep up. When I founded /r/whatsthissnake 12 years ago, with on average one request every day, I never imagined we'd have 150K members and 20k people a day browsing the subreddit. In the past, we've made a number of incremental changes that have been so helpful they have been instituted other places on Reddit, from introducing the term "Reliable Responder", to developing the bot and tweaking our community resources so that every Reliable Responder can choose to perform mod actions. We hope that these changes will allow us not only to maintain the level of quality provided but to reduce workload on the moderation team, because honestly, moderator burnout is a serious problem. They are doing this for free and you would no believe the abuse they receive here - not just from me, but from the users too. If you see a moderator or other flaired user in cleaning up a thread, espcially in these busy, snakey spring months in North America, throw em a thanks.

Moderator Announcement Rule Change - Posts concerning individual or private ownership or care of medically significant species are not allowed. Posts involving animals in zoos, institutions or accredited breeding facilities are allowed with proper contextualization.

It’s a fact of life that no matter how much context we provide to our posts, when someone sees something interesting, they want to imitate it. Each day /r/snakes puts around one hundred thousand impressionable people face to face with snake related images, text and ideas. Faced with this responsibility, and with an increasing number of recent, low quality posts concerning medically significant snakes, we have to choose the right level of content we allow.

Recent low quality posts concerning captive venomous care include improper use of personal protective equipment, poor quality/security housing, very inexperienced keepers asking (and receiving!) advice on how to keep and breed their first venomous snakes and straight up animal abuse reposted from social media. Many of these clearly rule-breaking posts are removed before you see them, but a growing number of posts are clearly low quality, irresponsible content but don’t explicitly violate the rules. Over the past three years the mods have debated a rule change and we have decided to only allow posts involving venomous snakes if they are from an accredited zoo or institution. In short - we’re going to remove posts involving the private care and ownership of medically significant snakes.

Many modern herpetology texts recommend against individual private ownership of medically significant snakes. We don’t take a stand on what anyone wants to do legally, ethically and with their own time, but we do have to regulate what is posted, shared and thus propagated here. In short, we don’t care what you do, but don’t post it here. Besides being a lighting rod for the low quality content discussed above, private ownership offers unique challenges that are better suited for an institutional or team setting. Snakes are escape artists as well as attractive nuisances and must be contained outside of personal residential spaces in secure, locking enclosures to prevent both snake egress and human ingress as well as secondarily in a sealed room or facility behind a windowed door with no items on the floor under which an escaped snake can hide or avoid detection. It takes a team to execute an envenomation plan and the cost of antivenom is beyond that of most private owners, has a short shelf life and when antivenom is borrowed from institutional stocks it puts those keepers at risk.

Zoos and institutions don’t always do it better, but the onus is on them to provide best practices in care. If we limit posts to places where a team of people works together to provide a standard of care, usually for the right reasons, we can limit what we propagate on the platform.

We do not recommend any other available subreddits as well-moderated sources of captive venomous keeping. The most popular places on social media dedicated to this are inundated with low quality posts and comments and even when they outright ban irresponsible behavior, examples of the low quality content we remove are highly upvoted, and content is often sensationalist, psychopathic or disturbing. Please don’t suggest a specific place in the comments of this post. We’re aware of the options and we’re choosing not to redirect or name other online spaces.

Posts on wild venomous species are still allowed as usual with a species name and a location, but please be sure to see Rule 6 (unchanged) on what amount of contact and PPE use we find acceptable for sharing online.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER

Pet Snake Questions Not sure if this is something I should take my guy to the vet for or not, any advice?

Hello, there’s no excuses but long story short I’ve been having some difficult events in my life recently and have moved houses as well so I haven’t been inspecting my snake as closely as I should have, rosy boas can commonly refuse to eat in winter months, I had tried feeding him several times but he refused each time, when before he’d had no issues, so I figured to let him be and not stress him out by holding him, though I really should have checked on him earlier as I’ve unfortunately noticed some dark patches on his face, my worst fear was mouth rot, and that’s what I immediately assumed it was, and they’ve gotten a tiny but darker since this photo but what I’ve realized after holding him is that it appears it’s actually layers of some stuck shed but only on his nostrils and eye caps, rather than his whole body. I gave him a warm soak and hoped to remove these gently with some tweezers but unfortunately they’re quit difficult to remove and I was only able to remove one nostril before he got too upset and uncomfortable, so I decided to stop there for today, however what does really concern me is that I’m not sure if I’m seeing extra saliva in his mouth and some clicking noises, but I’m wondering if that’s just due to the nostrils, or if he does actually have a bigger issue in his mouth, as well as the darkness in his vent (I think that’s what it’s called) now the darkness did significantly improve after a humid soak, so I’m wondering if it’s just dirtyness from the humid hide which I provide to him for shedding which I’ve now cleaned or if these are symptoms of a greater problem that does actually require vet attention. Of course if he needs the vet I will absolutely go but the costs here are extremely expensive so I would prefer to avoid it if it’s possible to treat him at home, if not I will take him. If anyone has any advice for my situation and would maybe be willing to dm me as I may have more follow up questions that would be amazing, but responding here is fine too.

Pet Snake Questions How to find a lost pet snake?

My 3 month old file snake escaped her tank in the middle of the night. I was stupid and left a gap big enough for her to escape from through the top of the tank. She was about to shed, and day she escape was her feeding day. Its been two weeks and we've tried almost everything. Left hides with heat lamps on top, left pinkies out at night, grocery bags in corners against the walls in hope of hearing her, lines of flour to see the general direction she went, checked and broke down damn near everything in my house besides one roommates room because she for some reason wont left us check out her room and nothing. And im extremely distressed. She hasn't eaten anything for a long while, in shed, and its becoming winter. Im scared and want to find her soon. So please, any tips or advice would be much appreciated.

Pet Snake Questions Need tips for stuck partial shed

I have a 3 year old Cali King that's beginning to shed around his face and his one eye is really cloudy. Is there anyway I can help him? Thought of doing a warm water soak in a container in shallow water? I've got his heat lamp pointing towards his water dish and he's been soaking in it already. Also have a humid hide with the sponge moss inside and spray it once or twice a day.

Hi! I recently acquired a corn snake and a milk snake complete with tanks etc. I have gotten permission to keep them in my elementary science classroom but I’d like to find a way to lock the enclosures. I have clips already but these aren’t full proof if an enterprising high schooler wanted to open the tanks for a prank or something. Thanks for your advice!

Pet Snake Questions MBK vs black african house snake vs ??

Post image
2 Upvotes

hi! i'm looking to get another pet snake that's pretty handleable and larger than my hognose, and i really like black snakes. they're absolutely beautiful. i've looked at my options and it's generally come down to mexican black kings or black african house snakes. (i did research on sunbeams but since most are WC and they burrow 99% of the time and theyre so high stress so i decided against it fs.) so here's what i like about them and i need help from yall who have them!

i like MBKs because of their size, although i'm worried that they might be a bit too big since i live in an apartment and i'll be moving every year for at least the next 2-3 years so space is limited. i love how they look and ive seen people praise king snakes for being so easy to take care of among a lot of other things. my other big concern is with potential handling, i know they musk too. i'm sure it depends on the snake and how socialized they are, but it doesn't sound too fun lol.

on the other hand, i really like BAHS' because theyre also beautiful and i love the almost boa or python look to them. ive heard theyre a generally intelligent snake, and they're also just super cute. i wonder though: 1. do they musk at all? (is that a dumb question lol?) 2. how big do they genuinely get? 3. do they tend to get stressed out easily? ideally i want a snake that's maybe 3-4 feet long, but i've seen a lot of mixed things. online people seem to regard them as pretty easy/forgiving to take care of which is great, but i'm unsure if they're just too tiny!

unless, of course, theres some alternative that yall think would be better? i looked at black milk snakes briefly and while they are beautiful too, i fear they genuinely are too big for what i'm looking for at this time.

much appreciated for your time reading this 🙏

General Question / Discussion What do you do if pests get in the tanks?

Post image

Hello! I recently just moved and I seen to have developed a small problem with roaches. How do I get them out of the tanks linings and still keep the tank safe for my snakes?

More info: snakes have been moved to TEMPORARY carriers that are free of bugs. Bugs are not at the place I just moved to, and I am attempting to keep it that way. Bugs were picked up in a stopover situation and hopefully will not continue. Tanks are currently sitting in the cold outside of the apartment.

Thank you for any advice!

Pic is snake tax of my milkshake :D
