Soil for Kenyan sand boa

Post image

I’m currently processing a bag of timberline top soils for my snake. I’m getting out the big chunks of wood and rocks. Hopefully the picture below is a good look at what the texture is. Is it safe to have small pieces of wood in the tank?

Hello!

I’m getting a Kenyan sand boa soon. I was wondering if using aluminum clamp lights are okay for the snake instead of buying reptile specific ones?

Thank you!

My new worm has made it safe and sound 🥰

I've been on the hunt for a good paradox baby for a minute now that would be light colored and FEMALE. I do not own too many males in my collection (it's gotta be special if I do a boy)

I currently own an Anery Stripe Kenyan Sand Boa named Nephthys so the fact this Paradox Snow STRIPE popped up on MM I knew I had to have her!

Welcome Isis named after Nephthys sister in Egyptian mythology since all my snakes are named after god/dess 🫶

This happens 2 out of 3 feedings. The water bowl is dirty because even though I changed it today, she likes to drag dirt into it

Another gender question! 🙏🏻🐍❤️

Sorry to be adding to the slew of gender guessing games here, but we fell in love with a Kenyan sand boa at the local reptile shop and they haven’t sexed it (and won’t).

They’ve had it for over a year and I’d say it’s about 13-15” and a petite lil thing, though I know that doesn’t say much at that age.

Here’s a pic of the tail we took today — we would really appreciate your best educated guesses.

Tank Upgrade

Just upgraded my KSBs habitat and it my first DIY vivarium where I made a substrate mixture and created a background. Her old enclosure was a glass tank with aspen base with some small rocks, bark pieces, moss and wood furniture. I’ve upgraded to a pvc tank and added a lot more furniture, moss and fake plants. So far she seems happy and is giving everything a good long sniff. I had to share because I’m so happy with the outcome! Tank dimensions are 36x18

Please no rude comments, just wanted to share a happy upgrade post

Save me from my over thinking

I am getting a bioactive terrarium set up for a Kenyan Sand Boa. Don’t have him yet, trying to get it all dialed in first. I know the hot side needs more clutter and will be getting more. Ignore the readings on that thermometer/hygrometer- it was right after adding/misting the soil and before the heat was on.

The main thing I am not understanding is where the hell do I put my thermostat probe? I have it resting on the basking spot (cork bark), but I know it can’t be left there loose because it will be knocked over.

I have the dimming thermostat set to 93 degrees. Temp on the cork bark is 90-95 degrees depending on the spot (taken using an IR thermometer). Ambient air temp is 80-83 in hot area and 74-77 on cool side. I feel like those temps are a bit low?

Basically trying to figure out how/where to put the thermostat to regulate all of this properly.

Heat source is a 50w halogen basking bulb from Arcadia.

I’ve read everything from hot glueing it to the bark to letting the probe dangle in the air below the bulb to attach it to the back glass. I just want it to do the job of not overheating the basking spot.

Any help/advice appreciated!

This has never happened before and he’s acting like his usual self but his chin has never been this swollen. Any idea what it is? I plan on trying to get him into the vet tomorrow if they can him but it’s not a guarantee. It doesn’t feel hard or like something is stuck and I’m freaking out

Just bought this cutie pie! He's so curious and active. Breeder says he handles well, but I'm gonna let him settle in a bit before testing that. He is interested in investigating me though, and when I put my hand in the tub he'll come right up to check it out.

He is 5 years old and about 145 grams, and we will be starting a diet because of his body condition (the spine divot, the bit of space between scales, and the rolls when coiled).

He's got some stuck shed on his tail and it looks like there's some in his fat rolls too, so right into the humid hide he went. And then he came right out and started making himself a tunnel lol

So obsessed with him

My Sand Boa hasn't had a proper shed in 8 years

I've owned my kenyan sand boa Chubs for over 8 years now. He's healthy, his enclosure is at a proper humidity, and he eats regularly. I weigh him every so often to ensure he is neither overweight or underweight. However, in 8 years of owning him, he has never had a complete shed on his own.

I've tried leaving a humid hide in there for him and spraying it when he looks like he's about to shed. I've left lots of objects he can safely rub on to get the shed off. Nothing works.

Every time he sheds, he gets all of the skin off of his face, and stops there. I've left him alone to see if he would deal with it on his own, but the skin dried out, and I had to give him a soak and get the rest of it off myself. It's been 8 years and it's the same routine every time. He gets the shed off of his face and eyes, and ignores the rest. I have to help him.

I would love for the guy to shed on his own so I don't have to stress him out and spend an hour or more de-shedding him every time. Has anyone had the same issue? How do I fix this?

Shy Baby Sand Boa Advice?

Hello everyone!
I recently got a baby sand boa, and she is extremely shy. Anytime she’s active at night and hears me nearby, she burrows into the substrate. When I try petting her back before holding her, she hurriedly slithers away. I know shyness is normal and I must let her settle into her new environment, but I want to eventually get her used to being handled.
From the few times I held her (which was at the pet store), she was extremely wiggly, but would try to settle after sometime. However, the pet store said she was relatively good being handled. My guess is she’s around three to four weeks old, the pet store unfortunately did not have an exact date. We also are not 100% certain without a doubt she is a female, we just think she is based off her tail. Also, she is yet to have her first meal with me, since I just got her last Thursday 10/8.
This is my first pet snake; however, my roommate with reptiles (and biology major) has been guiding me along. I did my research and still actively doing so. The fact that my baby girl is so anxious is making me anxious!
Is there any advice anyone would recommend, or is it just a matter of playing the long game?
Thanks!

How’s my tank setup?

I still need UVB but I’m working on that. A few months ago I upgraded my Rough Scaled SB’s tank size from a 10 gallon to a 30 gallon (the one in the photo) and added more substrate 50/50 coconut fiber and play sand. What else could I add? Underneath the log in the center there’s sphagnum moss too :)

Nephthys my Anery Stripe Kenyand Sand Boa SECONDS after shedding I just had to pull her out and get pics of her in natural sunlight 🥰

Since she's a burrowing species so I don't get to see her much but when she's out she's sweet as can be and just sits like a potatoe lol

Worrys about eating and weight

So muppet has refused his 4th meal in row and I am beginning to get a bit worried. We used to feed every week, we tried this 3 times and now waited two week in between feedings. The mice are warmed up, brained fuzzys or pinkies. He has eaten both before. We just unsuccesfully tried feeding him in a box. He is 33cm 1 year and two month old and weighs 44g. We were thinking the issue might be that he is simply too fat already. The warmest spot in his enclosure might be a little to cold, its 31 C.

He is very active and interested in humans and shows very little fear response, he does seem to be slightly afraid of his food though. He is out and about multiple times during the day and he activly tries to crawl up my arm if I put it in his enclosure.

My questions are:

How woried should I be? And should I try anything else beside being patient?
