Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty surgery (UPPP)

• Upvotes

I’m 3 days post op from this surgery and god it’s been brutal 😭 the first day wasn’t too bad but I’ve barely been able to eat anything, just been mostly sipping water since they said to stay hydrated. Has anyone else had this surgery and dealt with this pain before? And did it help your sleep apnea symptoms once you healed?

Scheduled for home sleep apnea test

• Upvotes

I have a home sleep apnea test scheduled in about a month.

What was your experience with the test, and did your results lead to a CPAP prescription?

Mask Help?!

So I got a machine (ResMed AirSense11) end of May. I was wearing it every night, consistently. Then, I got a tooth infection. The air hitting my tooth hurt a LOT. It was excruciating. There's no available dental appointments in my area. So my options were to take antibiotics and hope it went aaway, or try to go at 4 in the morning ,waiting outside in the dark, and then sitting in a waiting room for about 4 hours until I could get it pulled at emergency dental. I was in agonizing pain and I have disabilities that mean someone would have to come with me that entire time, and understandably people aren't generally available at the time, nor arw they available for such a long waiting period.

So I waited it out, which was a couple weeks, along with the first few days that i thought it was just sensitive teeth, and I didnt wear the machine because i was literally not sleeping. Eventually, the antibiotics work, and I start wearing it again. And yet, insurance sent the mailer to take it away from me.

Last week, a family member accidentally broke the short tubing in the front of the mask off because they yanked it from under something, not realizing it was under something. We call the company, they say they can't send a replacement piece because I have to get reauthorized due to failing the compliance standards. What ensues next is a LOT of back and forth. I call insurance, they say I need to call the sleep study team. I call the team, they say I need to contact the compliance department. The compliance department says I need to call the machine company again. The machine company says I need to call the local number. The local number says I need to buy a new mask frame, because my insurance says I'm eligible for every BUT a new mask frame after 6 months. I can't get a new mask frame until next summer. The compliance department said" insurance will cover your machine if you're 70% compliant", but couldn't even tell me if I'd be reimbursed! My compliance was 56% 🙃. Looking on ResMed, I don't even see my exact mask frame, and the things I'm seeing are saying like $80 to $100 and I don't see the tubing on any of them. I don't know what to do, and no one I call seems to know what to do either. It's so stressful, especially because I've notice a difference in my chronic migraines since I started using it.

My sleep apnea has almost disappeared after 4 months on Mounjaro

I wanted to share my experience because the improvement in my sleep has been incredible.

I started Mounjaro about four months ago, mainly for weight loss. I went from around 80.5 kg to 59.4 kg, losing over 21 kg.

One of the biggest unexpected benefits has been my sleep apnea.

Before, I struggled with sleep apnea and rarely woke up feeling properly rested. Now, my symptoms have almost completely disappeared. I sleep much better, wake up refreshed, and feel a significant improvement in my energy levels.

I also underwent sleep apnea surgery last year, so I can't attribute the entire improvement to Mounjaro. But the difference I've noticed during these four months, alongside the weight loss, has been significant.

I haven't had a repeat sleep study yet, so I don't know whether my apnea has objectively resolved.

Has anyone else experienced a major improvement in sleep apnea after losing weight on Mounjaro or another GLP-1 medication?

I'd be interested to hear whether your improvements were confirmed by a sleep study.

Sever Sleep Apnea and Tonsillectomy

Has anyone ever had their tonsils removed for sleep apnea and did it help and did it stay that way.

I am 29, healthy 6'4 205lbs and was diagnosed with severe sleep apnea. Had some issues getting sick and getting strep 4 years ago and was told i have mild sleep apnea then. Some lifestyle changes (less drinking and priortizing sleep) kepy me from getting sick but my SA has gotten worse. Partner will have to sleep in separet bed and dont feel that great in the morning. Between three options and dont love the idea of surgey but curious if anyone else here has done it and how has it benefited you?

Doctor mentioned i can do one of three things.

  1. CPAP (dont love this, feel as though its the most instrusive from a long term lifestyle
  2. Oral device- seems the easist and most convient
  3. Getting tonsils removed (I have large tonsils and with my prior strep history would make me qualify. this is the most drastic option and one i woulldnt take likely. Long term benifits are intersting but does not seems like a fun procedure)

Same mask year long?

My father-in-law started using CPAP to treat his sleep apnea. I recently learnt that he has been using the same mask (F20) for the last year. He said he does wash, wipe and sterilize his mask periodically. However, using it for this long without replacing regularly like Resmed recommends seems like a health hazard. Any doctors here or long-time users who have thoughts about how unsafe this might be? Worth pushing him to change the mask more frequently or let him continue with the practice. I believe his motivation here is to lower the cost of supplies.

Kratom helps for sleep apnea my gf has

In short, she has diagnosed apnea and narcolepsy. She doesnt have the events everyday, but when she does, its horrible.
I was desperate what to do excluding the device for apnea (dont know the name)

I use kratom, she couldnt sleep, i give her like 1-2 gs, boom. Apneas completely gone (all 4 times i give her kratom, it stops). Maybe like 1 short event in 10-15 minutes. (cca i cant tell exactly)

This isnt an advice for anyone to try it for sleep apnea. Im just sharing my experience.

Enjoy your evening guys

edit: “harm reduction” - i use kratom heavily, its very bad for body, motivation, libido and the withdrawals are worse then from meth.
I added this because its actually the only drug i use heavily, and its 100% NOT WORTH IT!

A follow-up post

Hi, everyone. I was expecting to do a follow-up post in 2-3 days since that's when I thought my test report would get in my hands but I got it today morning, so a follow-up post I thought would be good:

(This is the first post by the way: https://www.reddit.com/r/SleepApnea/comments/1x99i2o/sleep_apnea_ocd_depression_anxiety_and_social/ )

Firstly, these are the results from my first and second test (I read the rules and I guess me using a table created by ChatGPT -of course based on my results- is okay, right? I can delete it and create a table of my own but I decided to give it a go like that for the ease of use, please let me know if I need to change it)

These are the results, and I also apparently slept only 2 hours 37 minutes this time, which checks out because I had some (but not too much) trouble sleeping due all the electrodes (I guess that's what they are called in English, right?) + the device itself was a bit too much but I still got some sleep in that night)

I also got prescribed a CPAP device and a mask by a 4-doctor-health-commission, but I don't know if 14.5 AHI is healthy enough. ChatGPT said I got this 14.5 AHI with pressure level 13, but apparently I had 0 AHI on both 14 and 15 pressures. I consulted my doctor to see if 14 or 15 might be better and I'm waiting for her reply, but she might not be able to tell much since she is a neurologist and we moved to another city that's far-away, so consulting the 4-doctor-health-commission is impossible. I will get an appointment from the hospital here if needs be to consult that, but appointments here take time so I wanted to ask the users here about what they think. Also, don't worry, I won't do anything on my own, I'm just too curious and waiting is hard so I just wanna know

Thanks for reading and thanks for replying if you do! I can also provide more info if needs be

Have you had your adenoids removed?

Both of my daughter's had to have their adenoids removed by the age of 10 due to them blocking their nasal passage so severely. Neither had/have a weight issue. Now as for me, I am very overweight and was wondering if my adenoids could be a big factor for my apnea. I also have chronic allergies so my nose is congested almost constantly. I'm a heavy mouth breather because of this too.

Just wondering how common it is that they need to be removed for others suffering with sleep apnea? Did it make a big difference for you?

CPAP Club- Thank you!🎉

I remember seeing a thread here about walking through the airport and seeing other people with CPAP bags. The poster said it made them feel like they were part of a club. And people posted agreeing with them and sharing little stories about it.

I wanted to thank that person and all the kind people on this board. I’ve had a few medical diagnosis. But, I don’t feel like other people with these ailments are that helpful with advice. Sometimes I don’t think they understand my question and sometimes I feel like they catastrophize. But, I found the OSA community to be so supportive and positive well still allowing people to be honest and scared. I’m still new on my journey. And, I’m learning a lot from you guys. Thank you so much club OSA!! 💪🏽 😴 🥰

Just starting my journey, even more exhausted

Hi all,

Was diagnosed with mild OSA, but my symptoms have been pretty severe. Insane brain fog and fatigue, which I think is also exacerbated by my ADHD.

Just got my ResMed AirSense 11 and P10 mask two nights ago, but been feeling even more exhausted since using them. I haven’t downloaded OSCAR yet, but I’ve read on here perhaps it’s a good resource?

I’ll be seeing an ENT next week which will hopefully shine some more light on what exactly is causing my OSA, so maybe I’m a little premature with this post, but I’m 30F and not many people I know irl can relate.

Any success stories would be immensely appreciated :,)

At a loss with CPAP, Afib and Covid

As the title says

Seeking guidance from the community as a first time poster. 31 yr old male in BC Canada. Have a afib history, 2 abalations the most recent being last October. My afib has always been between 2 and 4am never the day time, after 8 years of pushing I finally got a sleep study. 24.6 AHI.

Diagnosed and informed I needed a machine, got one, the respirologist refused treatment because I didnt buy the machine direct from him, I wanted the lowenstien for both price and performance. Claims hes not allowed to provide help to someone who didnt buy a machine from him.

Family doctor gives me a basic 5 to 15 perscription, that is then reduced to 12 as I find myself gasping for air in the early hours and ripping off the mask.

Told ill adjust to it, keep trying, keep ripping the mask off daily in the early hours.

Contract COVID, after 7 days of horrendous sleep and suffering my afib returns today, almost a year post ablation and 5 months since my last occurrence. At this point the CPAP machine seems borderline useless if I cant keep it on my face especially in the hours where im going into afib.

If you read this far, what would your guidance to me be given the circumstances?

Need some advice - day 3 of using Oscar

Thumbnail gallery
2 Upvotes

I just got Oscar set up a few days ago. I know I need to have more data to get an overall picture of things, but I noticed something consistent across just 3 days already that I have a question about.

As you can see my OSA events are zero or practically zero across all 3 days, same with Hypopneas. What I noticed though is the high amount of "Clear Airway" events, in purple, pretty consistent across all 3 days.

When I did my sleep study, it was one night, at home, with a chest monitor and finger oximeter. The doctor told me I had mild OSA with 15 AHI. There was no data on the sheet he gave me besides my diagnosis stating my AHI was 15. I did not see any detailed data or graphs, so I'm unsure how much of that was actually OSA vs H vs CA, etc. I would be curious to know if it was all OSA or a mix or what. I would imagine if it was mostly CAs then they wouldn't diagnose me with Obstructive Sleep Apnea and put me on cpap and instead actually talk about brain signals and breathing and central sleep apnea and such..but none of that was brought up so I just assume my sleep study was all OSAs...idk.

It's my understanding CAs are all events where I just stop breathing entirely, different to OSA. I have read some posts in here where people say that you could show little to no signs of OSAs once starting therapy but then develop temporary high CAs as an adjustment to therapy that will go away after a couple months. If all of my events pre therapy were truly OSAs, that would mean that CPAP is working and most of my OSAs have gone away thanks to therapy, and I've most likely developed this influx of temporary CA events.

I've been on CPAP for about 1 1/2-2 months now, with the last 3 ish weeks being able to properly use therapy with a comfortable mask that works for me now. It took some time to find a mask that worked for me so my usage and fiddling with masks in my sleep was kind of inconsistent up until about 3 weeks ago, and I haven't been using Oscar long enough yet to see if these CAs dissipate.

*Also for reference, I was on APAP for the first month of therapy and then at my follow up 2 weeks ago, my doctor set me to a set pressure of 11. I have another follow up in 2 weeks to evaluate CPAP and decide if the pressure needs to be adjusted or if I should go back to APAP or what. I was personally planning on trying to record at least 2 weeks of Oscar data on CPAP at 11 pressure and then switching to APAP myself to record 2 weeks of Oscar data to be able to compare and get input on here to get my perfect settings dialed in, BECAUSE...important info here...when I was on APAP, my AHI # was incredibly low every night, ranging from 0.8-1.8, and never more than 1.8. I'm unsure how much of that was OSA vs H vs CAs since I didn't have Oscar then, but since switching to CPAP at pressure 11, my AHI immediately went up from the first night on, to a range from 2.8-4.7, and I cannot get it any lower than the high 2s, with it averaging in the mid 3s now. And now that I'm seeing the last few nights of data in Oscar, that number is only really coming ALL from CAs...so I'm curious to see if my CAs go away or lower when I go back to APAP...I'm even tempted to switch back to APAP just for a few nights before my next appointment so I can see the Oscar data and compare the CA events to see if they go down, even though my doctor will be able to see I switched back to APAP lol. Who cares.

any input and advice is welcome, thanks!

Transitional sleep apnea

I essentially cannot sleep at all. It’s a miracle I get a minute of sleep. My body loses the ability to breathe when I’m transitioning into sleep. Almost like the second I close my eyes i can’t breathe and my body also goes numb and restless. The only time it stops is when i’m on my period. It’s beyond torture. Anyone ever experience this?

Persistent breathing difficulty after uvulopalatal flap (UPF) surgery

hello everyone,

I'm looking for advice or experiences regarding persistent breathing difficulties after uvulopalatal flap (UPF) surgery.

On January 26, 2026, I underwent a sleep study (PSG) at a local clinic and was diagnosed with moderate obstructive sleep apnea (AHI 22, minimum oxygen saturation 77%). I initially tried APAP therapy but couldn't tolerate it.

I subsequently underwent UPF surgery and tonsillectomy at Korea University Anam Hospital on July 23, 2026.

It has now been almost three months since surgery, and I have been experiencing persistent breathing difficulties. My main symptom is an inability to take a deep, satisfying breath, accompanied by a strong sensation of tightness or tension in my soft palate.

My surgeon suspects postoperative sensory changes, possibly involving the soft palate indirectly. However, I suspect that the uvula being folded and fixed upward during UPF may have restricted the natural movement of my soft palate, making inspiration difficult.

Interestingly, whenever the tension in my soft palate temporarily decreases, my breathing becomes noticeably easier. However, the discomfort eventually returns.

My operative report also mentions "uvula elongation," indicating that my uvula was elongated before surgery.

While reviewing the medical literature, I found several statements that seem relevant to my hypothesis:

1. Powell et al. (1996)

"In patients with excessively thick palates, the doubling over of the muscular uvula may interfere with palatal function"

A Reversible Uvulopalatal Flap for Snoring and Sleep Apnea Syndrome.
Sleep, 19(7), 593–599.

2. Zhou & Hsia (2015)

"There is no absolute contraindication, but relative contraindications include patients with excessively long or bulky soft palate or patients classified as Friedman stage III."

The Uvulopalatal Flap.
Operative Techniques in Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery, 26(2), 78–84.

3. Verse, Pirsig & Maurer (2010)

"A too thick uvulopalatal flap may lead to dysphagia, articulation impediments, and obstructed breathing."

Palatal Surgery.
In Surgery for Sleep Disordered Breathing, 2nd edition, Springer.

Based on these references, I'm wondering whether my soft palate or uvula may have been too long or bulky for UPF, resulting in excessive tissue tension or restricted movement after surgery.

Most of my yawns get cut short before I can complete them. Only when I manage to yawn fully do I feel like I can take a deep, satisfying breath

I'm not suggesting that the surgery was performed incorrectly. I'm simply trying to understand whether the anatomical changes caused by UPF could be contributing to my breathing difficulties.

Has anyone experienced similar breathing difficulties or a sensation of restricted soft palate movement after UPF or UPPP surgery?
