My 2015 Silverado has been having an intermittent starting issue, particularly after sitting unused for extended periods.
When I turn the key, nothing happens. No cranking, no clicking, nothing. Usually, after turning the key 3 or 4 times, it finally starts. Once it starts, I can shut it off and restart it without any issues.
I took it to my usual mechanic, and they diagnosed the problem as a bad starter. They quoted me $1,150 to replace it, which seems excessive.
The mechanic explained that they recommend using a name brand starter rather than a cheaper aftermarket one because they've seen the generic starters fail prematurely. I understand paying more for quality parts, but when I looked online, I found starters for around $350.
When I questioned the price, he explained that their labor rate is $200 per hour and the job takes approximately two hours. That's $400 in labor plus roughly $350 for the starter, bringing the total to around $750. Even accounting for taxes and additional fees, that's still a long way from $1,150.
Am I missing something here, or am I being overcharged? I've been going to this shop for a while, but this quote has me seriously considering finding another mechanic.
Thanks.
