We're making a folk-horror short film entirely in Cornish — launching our Kickstarter on Monday!
Hi everyone!
I'm Andrew, an independent producer based in South West England, and I wanted to share a short film I've been developing with our writer/director, Tommy Creagh.
It's called Pewas Uter (Uter's Prize), a contemporary folk-horror short set in Cornwall, UK, which we're planning to shoot in February 2027.
The film follows a young man who becomes piskey-led during a traditional Cornish hurling game, forcing his father to confront an ancestral debt.
It's inspired by the Cornish droll of Uter Bosence and the piskeys, as well as the centuries-old hurling tradition in St Columb Major.
One of our biggest creative decisions is to make the entire film in Kernewek (Cornish).
It's a revived Celtic minority language, and we want to help demonstrate that it has a place in contemporary filmmaking. We're learning the language ourselves and working towards a properly translated screenplay with support from Cornish speakers.
From a production perspective, it's been an interesting challenge. We're balancing a relatively ambitious shoot involving traditional hurling, a culturally specific story, and the practicalities of producing a film in a language neither of us grew up speaking.
Our current production budget is approximately £26,000, and we're launching a £16,000 Kickstarter on Monday 19 October at 4pm UK time to help finance it.
We've been fortunate enough to receive a Kickstarter Projects We Love badge, inclusion in Witchstarter and support through the Kickstarter Culture Fund.
If anyone would like to take a look at the project or follow along ahead of launch, here's the campaign:
I'd also love to hear from other short filmmakers:
Has anyone here worked on a film in a minority language, or one requiring extensive collaboration with a particular cultural community?
And for those who've crowdfunded shorts before, did you find it more effective to emphasise the story itself or the wider cultural significance of the project?
Would be really interested to hear your experiences.
Thanks for reading!

Your short doesn't need a bigger budget. It needs a call sheet.
Shorts live and die on organization. You're moving fast with a tiny crew and borrowed locations, and a proper call sheet is the cheapest insurance you can buy. Costs nothing, and it does more for your shoot day than half the gear people stress about.
If nobody's broken it down for you: the call sheet goes out the night before and tells everyone where to be and when. On a short it's usually the director or the most organized friend making it, and doing it well is the fastest way to look like you know what you're doing, even if it's your first time.
I'm a working AD and I give my call sheet template away free, PDF and Word. Drop a comment and I'll DM you the link.
What makes it different from the generic ones: hospital info, weather, company moves with real times, meal times, and safety notes. The unsexy fields that actually save short shoots. Nobody frames the call sheet, but everybody remembers the shoot that didn't have one.
Good luck out there — happy to answer AD questions in the comments. No question too basic.

Mimic | Indie Horror Short Film | Produced by 21West Productions
The Appalachians have deep-rooted beliefs, whispered through generations. Locals pass down strict rules to their loved ones—taboos intended to keep the mountain’s ancient, hungry inhabitants at bay. They say the woods watch, they say the wind mimics, and they say that if you stray from the path or break a single vow, you invite something from the mountain. This is the story of one such invitation.

Short films on YouTube
Hello, I’m a substance use counselor/therapist running groups and am always looking for a short film available on YouTube that really feels ground breaking in a good way, shakes people up about their reality or establishes hope. I love the idea of short films in a group setting because most people have a short attention span. Any ideas are welcome!
