Real self-love is something most of us were never taught.
We were taught to be good, helpful, successful, and considerate of others, but not necessarily how to listen to ourselves, understand our own needs, or make them a priority. So we grow up looking for love in all the wrong places. In approval, relationships, achievements, and being needed. Hoping someone else will finally give us what we have not learned to give ourselves.
But self-love is something we practice, not just something we feel.
Here is where we start:
- Pay attention to your needs. You can't meet a need you haven't learned to recognize.
- Ask yourself every day: “What can I do for you today to make your life a little happier?”
- Actually do it. Make your own needs and happiness a priority, not an afterthought.
- Set boundaries. Stop saying yes when you really mean no.
- Keep promises to yourself. Build trust with yourself through your actions.
- Ask for what you need. Don't expect others to read your mind, but don't be afraid to receive love and support either.
Real self-love is taking responsibility for your own well-being instead of waiting for someone else to make you happy.
