205: My Best Friend's Birthday | Fake Doctors, Real Friends with Zach and Donald

It’s Turk’s birthday, but JD and Elliot are a little preoccupied by their significant others. What’s supposed to be a chill night with friends ends in betrayal, and somehow, a laugh. How do they always do that? On the podcast, Zach and Donald are joined by Doctor Dashana Trainor (Amanda Morrow) and Doctor Amara Hadi (Layla Mohammadi) to recount an episode heavily influenced by real-life events. Donald's love of all things steak, Zach's generous spirit, and the Scrubs cast's enduring friendships all take center stage in "My Best Friend's Birthday."

Discussion my once a couple of months "Place this scene for me" request comment:

One of the main cast really like a patient

the patient comments they'd do a lot for a new organ

the doctor or surgeon the patient made the comment to then has a brief fantasy sequence of just taking it from the other doctor they were in the room with

the victim collapses saying something like "Not cool man" or congratulated them for making the move.

Discussion Where should I start in the podcast to hear about the new revival?

Sorry if this has been asked before. I used to listen to the podcast but dropped off after season 3. What episode should I start at if I want to hear about the build up to the new season?

Discussion Salaries of the Docs

Just to make sure I’m not crazy, JD, Elliot, and Turk are rich, right? Like not able to live like celebrities, but they shouldn’t be too worried on paying for things or vacation? I understand Turk has a big family, but he been a doctor for a while and head of surgery; but for some reason, I’m still getting middle class vibes

Scrub Actors JD and Elliot thought

Does anyone else think that JD and Elliot’s child has died. There’s so subtle hints with how they talk about children and how “only they know what really happened” during their divorce.

Anyone else pick up on this or just me?

Discussion I’m sorry, but the revival just isn’t working

I have to say, I’ve been pretty disappointed with this new season of scrubs. I, like everyone here was ecstatic when I found out my favorite show of all time was making a return. But the show doesn’t know how to use the cast outside of JD, Turk, and Elliot, and the comedy is not nearly the same level as the original show.

Let me start with the positives:

JD and Turks chemistry is still incredible. They can bounce of each other perfectly, and still keep a great level of seriousness and silliness that made them stars in the 2000s

Elliot is still the badass with anxiety we all know and love, I’ve been very happy with her character.

The interns are good! I like all their characters individually, nothing insane but they are all unique and likable with some good jokes here and there. Also been a fan of Dubois this season.

The heartfelt moments have been there, JD and Cox, Blake and his patient, and Turks struggles with his mental health have all felt genuine and real.

Now the bad:

The cast shuffling has easily been the biggest problem with this show. I understand that scheduling can be tough(Judy Reyes especially) but it’s just so hard to connect with the characters outside of the main 3 with the inconsistencies in air time throughout the series.

In this new season, we have barely seen Asher and Sibby. Then they bring Asher back in episode 5 and try to make us feel for him struggling when he’s put on call, but he’s barely been in this new season at all, which makes it so much harder to connect with him. Sibby was a slow burn but was turning into a very funny character ridden with anxiety and craziness, and now she’s basically been forgotten this season. They spend so much time in season 1 with Dr Park(Who I liked!) just to get rid of him. Blake has an unbelievable performance in the last episode with that patient who thought he was her son, just for him to no show the next episode, he had momentum! Keep that train going! In my opinion, going with 5 interns instead of 3 was a huge mistake. There’s just not enough time/episodes to fully develop their characters. The 3 in my opinion should be Amara, Blake and Tosh.

Not having Cox and Carla as series regulars is such a killer, they bring such unique qualities that can’t be matched by the new cast. They don’t take shit, they’re hilarious, confident, and they bring heart to the show. You can feel the void when they’re not in an episode, and the episodes with them have such a higher floor. The Cox monologue from S1E1 was incredible, but it turned out just to be a tease of what the potential of this revival could have been which has ultimately has fallen short.

The Gen Z slang is unbearable. “Slapped” “It’s giving” “Slay” “Lock In” “Did we lowkey just eat that?” We get it. It’s 2026 and this is a revival series of a show from the 2000s. I’m 28 years old by the way, so don’t just peg this as an older person not in touch with the new generation. We don’t need all this cringe slang to remind us that “times have changed” and “this generation is so different”. I know it’s supposed to be part of Tosh’s character as the TikTok doctor but it’s incredibly overplayed and annoying in my opinion.

The fantasies have also been inconsistent, I’m pretty sure there were none in the last episode, which is sad because the fantasies are a staple to scrubs comedy element. The episode with the fantasy of Jordan breathing fire was hilarious, but OG scrubs had 3 to 4 fantasies like that per episode, pacing way higher than the revival has done.

In my opinion, they should have used season 8 as a blueprint for the revival. Cox as the chief of medicine, JD, Turk, and Elliot are more serious and have more responsibility within the hospital, and new interns(Denise, Ed, Katie) come in with their own shortcomings and development. I love that season and I think that could have been possible to recreate with the revival.

TLDR: the new series doesn’t work with the cast inconsistencies, and a too large of a shift from the old cast to the new.

First Time Watcher

After finishing The Middle and loving the Mike Heck character, my husband and I decided to watch Scrubs for the first time. We’re on Season 4 and are really enjoying it. I love how they mix the humor with some heartfelt moments.

Anyways, we watched the episode where a patient had a light bulb stuck inside him and the line “Either this kid has a light bulb up his butt or his colon has a great idea” had me rolling on the floor.

Nice to laugh after a long work day.

Scrubs 2026 Season 2 Don't like the new changes

First off love Scrubs glad it back for another Run but in saying that some of the new changed i don't like

Dr Sam Tosh what happened to the Tick tock Doctor this season they changed the Character that she no longer users her computer all the time it was annoying first season but to change one of the main things for her character in season two is confusing

dr. asher green some how them giving the guy a beard is putting me off and me thinking he a who new character to the show this might me just me.

they not showing that JD is the as the head of the hospital much they putting him more on the Main floor all the time that i keep forgetting that he is the head of the Hospital and not just another Doctor

this season is only five episodes in so maybe it me that the changes to the characters is putting me off

This Season is so good

Liked Season 1 and Season 2 has really found its footing. Can’t remember a recent sitcom where I have laughed out loud like this in a long time.

I watch all other Bill Lawrence shows, and as much as I like Shrinking and Rooster, I dont find myself laughing nearly as much as this season of Scrubs.

I know on the podcast Zach talks about how much they have to lose in the edit, but the 21 minute rules of broadcast works in their favour; everything is tight and jokes are punchy.

Also, been watching the podcast and some BTS videos. Think it’s really cool how seriously Zach is taking on feedback and how much of a hands on Executive Producer he has been. Really feel Bill’s mentorship is shining through.

I saw some other posts this week about ratings and just want to note down how much I’m loving this season; hopefully they can continue this hot streak for as long as they wish!

Is Scrubs Revival making anyone tear up constantly ?

I had watched the show back when I was in school, and loved it back then, rewatched it again when I was in my college, thinking I might not like it as much then, but I loved every second of it.
And now I'm 26 and working, just discovered they revived the show, and I went in thinking, yeah, this time, it definitely wouldn't be as enjoyable, but the first episode had me literally crying.

I don't know how they managed to bring back the show with the same essence, comedy and every single trope in the show and made it feel fresh, the chemistry between JD and Turk, the little goofy monologues that JD does in his mind, the love arcs even with younger cast, the janitor still messing with JD and off course, the emotional aspects of the show, every single thing feels so original and unforced like it was just a continuation of the original show which last aired 16 years ago.

Also, can we talk about how none of the actors have aged at all. Idk if it's heavy make up or something but most of em look like they've barely aged.

A very big Thankyou to the creators for reviving this show. I love this show man, hope it goes on forever.

I’m on s2e3 of the reboot and it’s making me laugh hysterically. I might like this might be better than reboot s1. I feel like I’m right back in high school. They really nailed it even with the new characters.

Discussion Fandom & current status of the revival

So we now have 2 or 3 threads about the numbers and a realization that this revival could be easily taken away from us after showing a lot of promise with the launch earlier this year. Aside from what we can do about that by watching it live (for our US fans) and stream it later (for US + a lot of internationals on Disney+ or wherever Hulu is accessible to you), I’d love to understand what is going on here.

So everyone who posts here has a Reddit account and most I would think frequent this particular subreddit. I can also safely assume you are a fan of Scrubs if you had put in the time to not only stumble upon these threads, but also to respond. Now I’ve seen many fans claim that they had no idea a 2nd season had started until the 3rd episode, last few days / week or actually because of a particular thread posted in the last 24 hours or so.

Now on top of this being very odd for people with a Reddit account who follow the revival to claim, since there’s so many ways to follow Scrubs news (Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, rewatch podcast, TikTok) there’s the bigger issue of people feeling the need to react to not the best viewing numbers and subsequently turn their dislike, anger and or fear of the revival getting cancelled, into an excuse to say the show should not have returned this soon, that the quality is shit, even last year fell off so they don’t even care that it’s still on and the like.

Now imagine if fans talk like this about a show they claim they love, what do we expect for new fans to think when they read all of that? And what do we think happens next? The show to magically become something you like and praise again? And what do we feel it helps for ourselves and our fellow fans when we allow our own negligence to follow the show close enough to realize it has started again to lash out and almost out of spite claim you won’t watch it or will just wait to binge it, since you dislike the weekly schedule and not worth it to follow weekly?

Now, I am not saying you should watch it simply to up the numbers since we don’t even know how it’s doing internationally. or that ABC cares. And if you are not even interested in it anymore then please just acknowledge you are no longer a fan of the revival and of course we can respect your opinion, but don’t be surprised if we don’t value it in regards to the revival, since there’s clearly enough in it hat should at least make you interested enough to follow it and not dismiss it all together.

For those who followed the revival’s 1st season and thought it was bad, I’d sincerely ask you to reconsider since it’s improved in a lot of ways. From color grading to camera depth to allowing more screen time for the OG cast and less of the interns. And to those disappointed that they found out too late that a second season would come in 2026 and possibly even feel it’s too soon, I’d urge you to at least own up that it’s also your own responsibility to follow and that there’s no point in wasting energy on it being different.

The second season is here, it’s in full swing and the creators have taken our feedback and improved it. Has it been perfect? No. Does it have flaws and things we understandably can dislike or even be upset about as it doesn’t live up to expectations or not align with the previous iterations (that we liked)? Certainly. You are allowed to feel about this show or say about it what you want. I just hope people think twice about what they are saying, how it reflects on them, their fandom and what it says about what you wish for the future of Scrubs.

Truth of the matter is, the show is happening, right now. We should count our lucky stars we even got a revival in my opinion. That we have not just Turk and JD, but also Elliott on as a regular. That we get at least half of the 19/20 planned episodes this year with Carla, at least 7 with Cox who’s been given a great storyline to keep him around, that we have Hooch, The Todd and The Janitor still around.

We should be happy that we have a group of interns who can go toe-to-toe with any of the past groups. That we have Bill involved, Tim Hobert and Aseem Batra as show runners and or writers. That ABC allowed for a full rebuild of the hospital as it was etc. That we have Christa Miller picking out the music, which is a wonderful score to sell the emotion just like old time. That they are really trying to nail this revival and staying true to the show’s original run’s roots. It’s getting a lot of possible feedback from critics and named as one of the few revivals doing a good job at bring back the formula and still knowing what made the show tick and land with (most) fans.

And just like the second season improved on took fan feedback into account, they can do that again for a 3rd season. So even for that reason you might want to give it another chance and see if it lands and just express - preferably in a constructive way - what you like and dislike, what can be improved, what you wish for etc. And consider this, if this is the final season, then that’s it. The show is off the air and we get nothing like it ever again. Might as well enjoy the ride, even if a bumpy one. And you can always pretend this is just an alternate universe or a what if scenario, like the Med School season, and that the original season 8 ending is still the official one.

So all in all, do as you please, but read through the most recent threads about the viewing numbers and tell me that it’s not messed up how many people blame a combination of the show’s creators, ABC, Hulu, Disney+ with completely lack of self-reflection for the lack of better numbers and for you to not know there was a second season happening right now. Please consider other fans and how our opinions on it, like an echo chamber, could basically cause all this negativity to make fans dislike the fans and or the revival simply because of it.

And think about what this tells you about your fandom and state of the revival when you don’t put in the effort to follow and or watch it, yet have all these opinions about it that do not reflect the quality, does not respect the people involved in the revival and does not do us any good in the continuation of it.
