Resources / Literature Frequently Asked Questions- r/schizophrenia

Welcome to r/schizophrenia!

Our subreddit rules are in the sidebar, we ask that you read and follow them. Feel free to post anything on-topic that does not violate these rules. We have a relatively comprehensive overview of how our rules are applied in reality available on the Rule Clarifications Wiki page.

For those who are new here, we have our Community Notices page which we would suggest users read. We also have our Creator Wiki for our participating artists and content creators- all of them have a diagnosed psychotic disorder.

Many first-time posters to this subreddit are concerned that they might be developing schizophrenia or they are concerned about other people who have- or may have- schizophrenia. We have resources available to answer these questions contained within the comments; if your question is completely answered by the information already given, it will be removed.

If you are here asking about advice for a family member, asking if a family member has schizophrenia or venting about a loved one with schizophrenia- it will be removed, and you will be directed to the appropriate community for that type of post, r/SchizoFamilies. Please read the rules of their subreddit before posting.

Mental health is complex. No symptom of schizophrenia is specific to schizophrenia alone, and there are many more common causes of those symptoms- especially in the prodromal stage. If you are experiencing an emergency, please call your doctor or local emergency services. We have a compendium of Crisis Lines available and may suggest r/SuicideWatch if you are experiencing suicidal thoughts and would like the most prompt attention.

Art I live with schizoaffective disorder and I paint my illness. This one is called "Awake": the hidden beauty of vulnerability.

For a long time, I saw my vulnerability as a weakness to hide. With this painting, I wanted to show the opposite: what's fragile and raw is often where the most beautiful things are hiding.

What do you see when you look at it?

Seeking Support I‘ve become a victim of extreme ridicule

Post image
57 Upvotes

It‘s not Schizophrenia, someone is purposely ridiculing me. Since I‘ve been diagnosed there have been signs popping up everywhere in my city. Usually the places I go. It‘s advertisement for some sort of children’s show with a unicorn on them. Called „FurziPups“. It started where I used to live. Hung up on lanterns like an add for political parties before a vote. I moved recently, but the advertisement has now followed me to my home. That means they stretch across the entire city.

I don’t know how to talk about this. Every thing I imagine saying sounds like I‘m delusional, and I think that’s the whole point. I am a victim of someone with the means to spread terrible things about me. I am very scared. I‘m not imagining this. I feel like nobody can help me escape this. What can I do?

I‘ll added a picture of said add above.

Progress / Good News ☀️ so grateful for every step toward relief

Schizophrenia can feel so heavy, lonely, and overwhelming. I want to be realistic: there are no perfect solutions, no 100% quick fixes, and recovery is rarely linear. So many people are still quietly struggling or suffering behind the scenes every single day, even when it’s completely invisible to the outside world.

But precisely because this journey is so tough, I feel gratitude whenever I see someone find even a fraction of genuine relief and stability. Every bit of progress is a huge victory.

To anyone currently feeling a bit better: I am so deeply happy for you. And to anyone still fighting in the middle of the storm to get there: I see you, and I hold so much hope that you find your relief soon.

Rant / Vent I hate that I'm told this is the best its gonna get

• Upvotes

I have schizoaffective disorder bipolar type. My bipolar symptoms are controlled pretty much through meds but I still get psychotic symptoms like hallucinations and delusions and paranoia. These symptoms are transient and not present 24/7 so my psychiatrist is happy with my current state and says there is no more to be done but I'm miserable.

I hallucinate something alive moving inside my body and it makes me feel crazy. I've grown attached to it and long to feel it again but when it doesn't move I feel so incredibly sad and empty. I have periods of extreme paranoia where I think my meds r poisoning me, my friends are conspiring with a mysterious group of ppl to hunt me down, ppl can read my mind and there are cameras watching me.

I can't take that this is just what I need to accept as my new normal. I'm only 22 I don't want my life to be like this.

Community Improvement / Ideas Suggestion: Adding a dedicated Recovery flair.

While we do have flairs like Progress/Good News, I wanted to ask if introducing a dedicated Recovery flair would make sense. Recovery in the context of schizophrenia isn't just about a single good news moment or linear progress, it's a complex, ongoing journey of rebuilding, finding small reliefs, and learning to live alongside the illness.

Having a specific Recovery tag could help create a dedicated space for these nuanced stories, making it easier for people to share that long-term journey or find hope when they need it most.

What do you all think? Would a dedicated recovery flair be a helpful addition to the sub?

Hallucinations / Delusions What’s real?

What’s my schizophrenia and what’s spiritual?? I have a really hard time differentiating between them. I was diagnosed earlier this year. After a very traumatic event. Sometimes I don’t think I am and others I’m completely convinced. Does anyone else feel the same way?

Trigger Warning my recent symptoms

Hi 🥹

I’m new here, and first I have to say, english is not my best language, so I’m sorry if this text is hard to read.. 😅

I have been experiencing some strange symptoms lately. My current medication consists of Lamictal and quetiapine.

I have been experiencing some truly distressing thoughts. Not so much hallucinations, but right now I am being troubled by violent thoughts. I am not going to do anything bad to anyone—that has to be said! But these violent thoughts of mine have to do with harming other people.

For example, I have wondered how quickly the police would catch me if I were to do something bad to another person. I imagine putting on some kind of "disguise" and going out. I want to reiterate that I am not planning to do anything. But these thoughts keep me awake at night, and I am currently feeling extremely anxious.

I was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder in 2024, and for the past few weeks, I have only been sleeping 2–5 hours a night. Even though I take my prescribed medication, I simply cannot sleep. I feel restless, and right now, I have an obsession with cleaning my home so that it looks as if no one lives there.

So, some kind of mania is going on right now.

I contacted my healthcare provider, but due to a lack of available slots, I couldn't get an appointment until two weeks later.

Does anyone have any experience with symptoms like these?

I have also had experiences of being watched, and I no longer dare to go outside.

I am afraid that these might be symptoms of an incipient psychosis. Is there reason for me to go to the health center’s emergency clinic?

I apologize if this post violates the rules.

Does anyone actually put down that they have a mental disability/disorder in their applications. And if so, have you had any luck with accommodations?

Opinion / Thought / Idea / Discussion Does anyone else feel mentally exhausted even when they've done absolutely nothing all day?

Some days I can spend hours doing practically nothing, yet somehow I still feel completely drained. It’s like my brain is exhausted even though I haven’t done anything physically demanding.

The frustrating part is feeling like I should have more energy because I haven’t really accomplished anything. Even simple things like showering, cleaning, or having a conversation can feel overwhelming.

It’s hard to explain to someone who hasn’t experienced it because, from the outside, it probably just looks like laziness.

Does anyone else deal with this? Do you ever feel like just existing takes up most of your energy?

Rant / Vent My brain just isn’t the same

Ever since I was diagnosed with schizophrenia my brain isn’t the same anymore. That sounds pretty obvious. But I mean that I can’t process things normal people can. I go outside and it feels like a void. I can’t process where I’m going or why (I don’t drive I wouldn’t be able to). I can’t tell you what happened yesterday or last week. I become mute when my surroundings change. When I hear the word “motivation” it makes no sense to me. Motivated to do what? For what? It feels like everything I do is meaningless when the world is a void and I don’t feel any reward. So yeah..

Is what my friend calls my look.

He says my eyes always look dead.

It's true, I don't ever feel emotions bc of this illness.

I feel so dead inside.

I wish I could feel happy.
