I made a free Safari extension that makes any video fill the window (not fullscreen), with Skip intro and YouTube comments/live chat built in

Post image

I'm the developer, so full disclosure. I built this because I wanted videos bigger without Safari's fullscreen taking over a whole Space.

Fill Window for Video makes the video fill your current Safari window, so you can keep other apps alongside it.

- Toolbar button, Cmd+Shift+F, or a hover button on any video

- Its own controls: skip, scroll to zoom, seek previews, a LIVE button on streams

- Skip intro / recap on Netflix, Prime, Apple TV+, Disney+ when the site offers it

- YouTube: Up next queue, a comments panel you can reply in, live chat, quality switching

- Glass controls that adapt to bright scenes, or turn them solid in settings

Free, no ads, no tracking. Optional tip jar if you like it.

Happy to take feature requests.

Safari video playback keeps breaking multiple times a day

I'm getting really tired of this issue with Safari.

Every single day, sometimes multiple times a day, videos suddenly stop loading on YouTube, X, Instagram, and other video streaming platforms.

On YouTube, I get the infamous: "An error occurred. Please try again later. (Playback ID: ...)".

Once this happens, refreshing the page doesn't help. The only workaround I've found is to:

- Open Activity Monitor.
- Force quit the Safari Graphics and Media process.
- Reload the page.

And voilà, videos start playing normally again. Until the next time it happens.

This has been going on for months, across multiple Safari/macOS updates. Meanwhile, the same videos work perfectly fine in Chrome (and no, switching to Chrome is not a solution).

I've already tried disabling extensions and using Private Browsing, but neither makes any difference.

It's incredibly frustrating that something as basic as video playback keeps breaking in Apple's own browser, especially when the issue seems to be related to Safari's media process.

I'm starting to wonder if Apple's own developers even use Safari as their daily browser, because I can't possibly be the only one experiencing this.

Has anyone found a permanent fix, or are we just supposed to keep killing Safari Graphics and Media several times a day?

I use a MacBook Air M2 2022, macOS Golden Gate 27.0.1, Safari version 27.0.1 (22625.1.29.11.28).

Is there a way to delete or hide this two sections on Safari?

I see the large thumbnails as a huge privacy fail, as a person next to user just have to peek. I don’t see a really use for the topics section and for me is a privacy fail for the same reasons above. I tried ai for a answer but the steps it showed me didn’t work at all. Anyone?

Safari on the Mac is just not fit for use

It's a buggy mess, and slow.

I really want to be able to use it. I used it for decades, then had to switch to Firefox because of the appalling UI changes where every button/tab is a lozenge etc. Then when Golden Gate came along, I tried to use it again. But I can't.

It doesn't work properly here on Reddit. It seems to be getting stuck with some sites, saying they aren't HTTPS when they are. There's a constantly floating Siri box on sites. And it's just slow. You don't realise how slow and laggy it is until you switch to a different browser.

I just miss Apple Pay as an option. I wish that Apple could find a way to properly implement that in third-party browsers. I realise there's a partial implementation, but no sites use it.

Bringing Arc's Peek for Safari

Hey everyone,

I really like Safari because its macOS native and power efficient, but ever since I tried the Arc browser I found myself really missing their Peek feature. For those who haven't used Arc: hold Shift and click a link, and Peek opens it in a small floating window, so you can preview it without opening a new tab and cluttering your tab bar. It's perfect for quick reads, checking a reference, or just seeing if a link is actually what you're looking for.

I wanted that exact same workflow in Safari, so I spent some free time building an extension to replicate it. It's called Peek for Safari.

You can check it out here: https://joshuapark.dev/peek-for-safari/.

Features:

  • Instant Previews: Preview a link directly on your current page without opening a new tab.
  • Native Feel: Designed to be lightweight, fast, and feel right at home inside Safari.
  • Privacy First: It's just a simple Safari extension, no tracking, no bloat, and your browsing data stays with you.

Limitations:

  • iframe Blockers: Some sites block embedding, so they open in a popup window instead of the overlay. This is a site restriction, and I can't get around it.
  • JavaScript Links: Links that a page opens with its own JavaScript, rather than a normal click, aren't intercepted.

It's a simple utility, but I'd love to hear your thoughts, feedback, or any bug reports if you decide to give it a try. Right now it's free for a limited time but I may make it a small one-time purchase in the future to cover the costs of keeping it on the App Store (but if you install it before then you will own it and won't need to pay anything).

Notify me issue

Post image
3 Upvotes

I’m not sure if I’m doing it wrong. Notify me functionality has never worked for me.

I’ve set it to notify me when size XS for that jacket comes back in stock.

However I get “change is detected” and when I click on it, the same item is still out of stock in size XS.

So is it understanding my request or just notifying me of any change?

Hi Apple, please consider releasing the Safari browser for Windows and Android as well. It would be great to have Safari available across more platforms.

Why oh why hast thou borked the bookmarks in iOS?

In the good old days (before I updated to iOS 27) I used to be able to get to my bookmarks, at the precise place in the deeply nested and admittedly possibly over-complicated bookmark tree at which I sat when opening a tab, with essentially a single click.

But now, alas, it appears that if I wish to go to a bookmark within the same folder from within my current tab, I must start at the root bookmark folder and navigate my way back through this complicated nesting structure to the very bookmark folder — in which I currently sit.

Friends, am I missing something, and is there a shortcut to avoid this atrocity?

Help with Safari History and YouTube

Post image
1 Upvotes

So, you know how you watch YouTube videos on safari right? And they show up in your history tab in safari right? And when you have trouble with the internet the video doesn't show up in your history instead being replaced by a "YouTube" place holder name and then the name of the Internet address under it right? Well for some reason I've been getting this problem despite reconnecting to the internet, and resigning in to YouTube this has been happening for a day now and whenever I try to go back into my history tab and pull up a video I played before it just says "YouTube" with no proper descriptor. If anyone can help me please tell me what's happening here, I'm at a loss. Thank you.

Above is an example of what I'm talking about.

Done with Safari

I pretty much quit using Safari on Mac for a while. It seemed like it couldn't load 1 out of every 3 pages I went to, without having to click reload. Sometimes it worked. I started using mostly Chrome, sometimes Firefox, both of which work well. My wife just got a Macbook Neo and tried to use Pocket FM on Safari, and....... it loads the page and press Play on an episode....and it spins and spins, She downloaded Chrome, loaded Pocket FM and was playing her episode while Safari still spun and spun....after 4 reloads. Don't tell me a bunch of nerd stuff, "Change XYZ, pull up Terminal and enter the command.. blah blah. The whole point of spending more for Apple is that it just works. Safari....doesn't.

I have used my ID to prove I’m 18 on my Google account already, but nope, guess safari says no?

I can’t even do anything, I’ve tried to change it back through my Google account setting and it says I already turned it off, but if I look up porn I’m blocked. wtf is this and how do I turn it off?

Run Chrome extensions in Safari

The problems

  • lots of Chrome extensions never got a Safari version
  • Apple's converter only gives you an Xcode project
  • converted extensions still break on chrome.* APIs Safari doesn't have

The CLI

  • converts it, patches the chrome.* APIs Safari doesn't have, builds and signs it
  • --analyze tells you what'll break before you convert anything
  • needs Node, source available on GitHub

The app

  • on the Chrome Web Store "Add to Chrome" turns into "Add to Safari"
  • import grabs what you already have in Chrome, Brave, Edge, Arc, Vivaldi or Opera, settings too for most of them

Price

  • CLI is free
  • app is free for 2 extensions, removed after 7 days
  • full version $19 one time for unlimited extensions + Web Store updates

Safari video buffering/black screen on Wi-Fi — any fix?

Hi everyone,

Video playback in Safari broke after updating from macOS 26.7.1 to 27.0.1.

**Symptoms:**
- Safari on Wi-Fi: Web players show a black screen, YouTube buffers constantly.
- Chrome on the same Wi-Fi: Works perfectly.
- Safari on mobile hotspot: Works perfectly.
- Rolling back to 26.7.1: Everything works fine in Safari.

**Already tried (didn't help on Wi-Fi):**
- Custom MTU (1450, 1280, etc.)
- Private Relay & "Limit IP Tracking" disabled
- Custom DNS (Cloudflare, Google) & IPv6 disabled
- UDP blocked via Terminal / packet filter
- Sysctl network tweaks & router QoS disabled

Is there a known fix for this on 27.0.1 without switching to Chrome or rolling back?

Checking if a website is already saved in bookmarks

In firefox when you want to add a new bookmark, you click on command+d and the pop up appears just like in safari. However, what safari does not do in the same pop us is tell you if you have already saved this bookmark and where you have saved it.

Safari will automatically show you the last bookmark folder you have saved the last thing in. Firefox does that too UNLESS the website is already saved somewhere. Safari is really not intuitive. Is there another shortcut that does what firefox does?

Sometimes I forget if I have saved something and where... And I have to go play around until find if and where it is. Idk if this is a common thing but no, I do not always remember where I saved something ◠̈ I have a ton of folders to try to organise all my interests which sometimes can be a bit overlapping. And unfortunately, I have too many interests. Thus is my life with adhd.
