BYOND BYOND development news 10/16/26
In response to the need for remedial classes on ethics and safety, corporate sent over a new four-week curriculum that seems to have worked on Space Station 8, so I know we'll smash those results. Chief Lau has volunteered her own remedial cadets to oversee compliance, which should keep everyone just on-edge enough to take this seriously. I hope that once this adjustment period is settled, we can see long-term improvements in accident statistics across the board. The new researchers who sailed through the previous classes are now getting on with their work properly, and if we're lucky it won't result in plant monsters, ambulatory explosives, exceptionally bright rogue AIs, or major bluespace ruptures. Because of the ongoing classes, corridor tag teams have been rearranged for the next series, so those of you with the free time should get to know your new squad mates. A prepared station is a well-compensated station!
- Medical interruptions came up again this week, but for the in-laws this time. Pretty bad ones, actually, so the week has been one of constant uncertainty.
- Some more bug fixes were done for 516, impacting large projects. One was a spurious warning that also caused some bogus var index data.
- The other big fix was a string tree issue that might potentially speed up compilation a bit for large codebases. It mainly impacts highly contrived scenarios, but those do tend to come up in SS13 due to creative uses of
#define. - Another bug I'm waiting to investigate properly impacts 516 and 517 both regarding render targets in unusual cases, but I'm ruling out a 516 fix because 517 will moot it.
- Thank you to the BYOND Members and all of you helping out on Patreon and SubscribeStar for keeping me going!
- Screw you, Spez.
There's more on the forums. Today's early-access Patreon post is about the string tree and how it's organized, and why balance is such a tricky issue. To say life is in massive chaos right now is an understatement, but I'll keep chugging along. In trying times, remember, we are Groot. Catch you next week.

UCFSS13 UCFSS13: apology
I would like to start by first apologizing for the last post I made trying to hype this up; it wasn't really my intention to ruin everything with low-quality AI slop, as many have stated.
The art wasn't really meant to be anything more than packaging for the larger package, which is that I am hosting a pretty decent server for everyone to have fun with.
I want to try again and see what can be done to improve my community.
I am still learning; I won't deny it.
But I will say that it's heartbreaking seeing all this spiral, and I really hope you will give me a second chance.
I have attached some of the cool stuff in-game for you to see and evaluate. There is a lot of stuff ported from our lovely codebases of CMSS13, Bastionstation, Neroid Sector, and TGstation, above all else, so thank you to these people for helping UCFss13's development.
I will also list a few cool things that were changed/added:
Dropship airlock sequence.
Vehicle crewmen were re-added to the roster.
Xeno hivemind command panel.
Xeno auto spawner for automated round missions.
VtoL-Blackfoot non-multi-Z
Multi-Z removal.
Synthetic rebalance.
Commander drip expansion.
Click rebalance.
Movement smoothing.
Vehicle and mob towing.
Major performance refactors.

That's just a small list of what's in-game!
Our first event ever! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UBlAAd8Piic
The aim of UCFSS13 is to bring about a skill-based MRP SS13-style Colonial Marines server, SS13-style meaning yes, it has many of the features and fixes of games like bastionstation, monkestation and so on!
Come on, let's have some fun!

General dmfast: speeds up BYOND's compiler and server
Hey all, my friends and I have been building a tool called dmfast that patches and speeds up BYOND's compiler and server for a little bit now.
/tg/station compile went from over a minute to under 6 seconds, and tg's world load on Windows fell from about 6.7 seconds to about 1 second. This will vary a lot on your machines, but we've had people's times go down from 2+ minutes to 20 seconds.
It works on Windows and Linux as well as BYOND 515 and 516 with a single .exe installer.
You just run the installer on your BYOND install and use BYOND as usual.
If the patches detect they aren't compatible, they'll auto-disable and if something ever breaks you can switch individual patches off or uninstall super easily.
Download: https://github.com/blue-tarpaulin/dmfast
We're also including opt-in-only bugfixes for things like RSC corruption, bad compiles, and broken runtime operations.
Right now, the code patches are private, but you can file an issue if you want access. We just believe that publishing internals of how the compiler works is not what the developer of BYOND wants at the moment.
However, there's a writeup of what each one does - and for the optional bugfixes, a bit more detail on how these were accomplished if one wanted to port these to BYOND.
We made this to accelerate SS13's ability to create fun, creative, and engaging content. Being stuck with an extremely slow compiler wasn't furthering that goal.
If you have any questions please ask - and if you hit a problem or want to give feedback, please open an issue.

*consulta as anotações*... droga...

These are all different characters in Paradise Station.
Logic was by far the most complicated, since the art was entirely by scratch, and not a complex edit or a simple redesign.
Still waiting for Paradise Station 14 ☹️ . I may do more skills in the future.

Image Inktober - "Mystical"
Once, a terrible monster threatened the station. None was robust enough to kill it except the greytider. Once she slayed the beast she became insane with bloodlust. Only when she stepped upon the CE did she remember to ASSIST.

Image Inktober - "Ram"
Inked with one attempt after sketching. If I made mistakes too bad. Inspired by my own ongoing computer issues and an idea user Ferrius_Nillan had about a "smart ass gun" I reworked for this. (Edited for mispeaking)
