Why didn’t H-Hour succeed?

• Upvotes

Loved SOCOM back in the ps2 days when I was a kid. SOCOM 2 and Combined Assault are probably still my favourite memories of gaming.

I’ve always just casually lurked in SOCOM reddit. Never played H-Hour. Zero Ops looks promising

Just curious though why H-Hour never got popular. I understand it never made it to PS4 and early backers got lied to. But it still looks like the closest thing currently available to SOCOM, so just wondering why more SOCOM players never migrated to it

Busy Night On H Hour

I just got H Hour set up for the first time and I am in shock. One room is full 16/16 so I just started a second room with Crossroads, Nightstalker, Ruins, Foxhunt, Enowapi and Sujo.

Get online tonight and play, it's free!

Help needed

When I was a kid my dad had the PSP and one SOCOM game. For the life of me I cannot remember which one it was and I’ve been looking for it recently to try and find it. All i remember is that you come out of the water in a village in the Middle East for the start of the mission, if anyone can tell me which one it is I’d be really grateful.

Thoughts after trying Zero Ops Beta

Honestly, not a bad game! Actually had a lot of fun playing. I won't give unwarranted well thought out criticism. So I'll just offer some constructive criticism for the devs. First, the feedback for hitting your target leaves some more to be desired. In the heat of the fight I don't hear the audio well enough to know I hit my target. It just feels like a bullet is fired so I can't tell how to adjust my aim with the bloom with the lack of hit registration feedback. I hope that makes sense. Also I've always been an M16 demon so maybe this was easier for me to notice. I can't differentiate the three round burst of my m16 from other teammates firing around me at the same time because all the guns sound the same when they fire. In the heat of a battle I can't tell when to time my clicks to maintain the three round burst uptime for a steady stream of fire. OG m16 players would understand this mechanic.

This brings me to another meta mechanic of the SOCOM multiplayer game. You could always tell who was running the M14 because of the distinct sound it made when it fired. That audio cue would effect players in how they approached an M14 user knowing that person had 20 bullets in their mag and was dangerous close up. So a player knowing an enemy had an m14 would fight at a larger distance with a longer drawn out gun battle to take advantage of a larger magazine.

Just some thoughts.

Also the terrorist round start music is so damn loud and long I can't hear my teammates comms at the start of a round. Makes it hard to hear call outs and in game play calls.

OUTSIDE OF THAT GREAT JOB DEVS!! LOOKING FORWARD TO MORE IMPROVEMENTS AND THE FUTURE OF ZERO OPS!!

Zero Ops in early 2027? No thanks, here would be my plan

I felt it while playing Zero Ops, the soul of socom is inside. However I don't think that's good enough to release in early 2027. This feels like the salad before my main course meal right now.

What the devs understand is we all want socom back. However the missing ingredient is releasing a game that EVERYONE not just socom fans want to play. This is way too early for ps5. This is way too early for beta. This won't fly with randoms in 2026. Not because it's a bad game though but because it is too close to alpha versus beta.

By my glance at feedback everyone enjoys the core of what you got. I do too! Take a year and dial it in further. Go over your gun fighting, animations, maps, features and so on. Spit shine and polish is all this game needs but it sure needs a lot of it.

If I was you Mr Silent-J I'd take my time and consider an entire year of polish work. You're excited and tbh probably about to be rich when you launch on ps5. However all that fame and money comes from people outside this community. Take the time and impress them next and polish her up.

ZERO ops is actually good

It’s going in the right direction . When this comes to ps5, the skill level will be really balanced. Obviously controller is the best way to go. WE ALMOST BACK!! We should start supporting these peeps. The closest thing we ever got to a Socom for console. Let’s all push this together for the better future and feedbacks.

Nostalgia overload

Man I have been missing out...

I saw people playing online using PCSX2 for a while now but never took the leap to configure it and try it out. Was at my retro game store last week and saw copies of all the socom games on ps2 for cheap and picked them up for the collection in hopes of getting this to work. After looking into it I ended up setting everything up and getting into my first Socom game last night and man.... IT WAS A BLAST. I haven't played this online since I was in HS and it felt so good to play it again. Nice to see people keeping this alive and I def will be playing this A LOT.

See you on the battlefield!!

Socom comeback?

So with the video i saw today with the ps5 unlocked, it reads ps2 discs... there has to be some way to use ai to make live servers for socom and socom 2 lobbys right?! Could we just have the original back instead of a remake?

My biggest concern with Zero Ops is the maps

My biggest concern with zero ops are the maps.

The maps were a massive part of the experience. Obviously, they can't simply reuse the original SOCOM 2 maps, so what is the plan to fill that gap?

In my opinion, one of the best things they could do is introduce a map editor or map building system, allowing players to create and share their own maps. Ideally, this would work on both PS5 and PC through Steam Workshop, giving the community the ability to build out the maps.

But if that's not possible, then the game really needs a top tier level designer who understands what made SOCOM 2's maps so memorable.

Let's be honest not everyone is good at designing maps and it's not about slapping random assets in random places. Giving players a map builder is great, but it doesn't guarantee we'll get maps that are actually fun, balanced, competitive, and suitable for the kind of tactical gameplay SOCOM was known for but this would give us the ability to recreate the old maps.

There's a reason we loved maps like crossroads, frost fire, sujo, and fish hook etc. They had their own identity and you learned those maps over hundreds of matches, and that knowledge became part of the skill ceiling.

You can't just make an ok map and expect it to deliver that same experience though.

So I'm wondering, if Zero Ops already has an experienced level designer on the team who understands what made SOCOM 2's maps so good?

I'm genuinely excited about the potential of this game, but I think map design could make or break it. Getting the gameplay right is only half the battle but the maps are what keep people coming back for thousands of matches.

I've played a lot of new maps in these socom remakes and most were complete ass and terrible, didn't even want to replay them more than a few times.
