NYRR 9+1 in 2027 - FAQs & Megathread

Every year r/RunNYC gets a lot of posts about the 9+1 program, so we're continuing this FAQ and megathread from last year and the year before. This year has the biggest changes the program has seen in a long time, so please read the whole post before asking questions.

NYRR's full announcement on the changes and FAQ are here.

What is 9+1?

9+1 is an NYRR program that earns you guaranteed (non-complimentary) entry to the following year's NYC Marathon.

To qualify for the 2028 NYC Marathon, a 2027 9+1 Passholder must, during calendar year 2027:

  • Run and complete 9 qualifying NYRR races
  • Volunteer at 1 qualifying opportunity
  • Have an active NYRR membership on 12/31/2027

You then still pay the marathon entry fee when you claim your spot in 2028.

What changed this year?

Starting with the 2027 program, 9+1 is limited to members who were selected in a free, member-only 9+1 Eligibility Drawing.

  • Eligibility: You had to be an NYRR member by 9/16/2026 at 11:59pm ET, and still be a member on 10/1 when the drawing took place.
  • Entry period: Sept 17–29, 2026
  • Drawing: Oct 1, 2026. NYRR says more than 15,000 members will continue to get in through 9+1.
  • 9+1 Pass: Selected members were automatically charged $99 separate from membership, race fees, and the marathon entry fee.
  • Only Passholders can earn 9+1 credit. All races that have historically been 9+1 eligible are still eligible, but only Passholders get credit for them. If you weren't selected, completing 9 races and volunteering in 2027 will not get you into the 2028 marathon.
  • Streakers / 15+: Some passes were reserved for runners with 13 or 14 NYCM finishes so those runners get 9+1 access for both 2027 and 2028 with no drawing to complete 15+ in the coming years. These members were contacted separately.

The 2027 drawing has closed, and the 2028 drawing will likely be around the same time, next October.

I'm a Passholder. How does the Race Selection Process work?

The Passholder Race Selection Process works as follows:

  • About two weeks before each quarterly race release, Passholders get an email with a survey asking which eligible races they can run that quarter.
  • NYRR randomly matches Passholders to races based on preferences and available capacity.
  • You'll be offered the following and then you are also able to sign up for as many additional races as you want during the general registration:
    • Jan–Mar: 1 race
    • Apr–Jun: 1 race
    • Jul–Sep: up to 2 races
    • Oct–Dec: up to 2 races
  • For Jan–Mar 2027, the survey went out 10/1 and closed 10/8. You should have received an email with your invite to your selected race on October 13th.

Do virtual races still count?

Yes, for Passholders, there up to 3 eligible virtual races. You must register for the Premium tier of:

  • Virtual NYRR Resolution Run 5K
  • Virtual NYRR Global Running Day 5K
  • Virtual NYRR Run for Thanks 5K

These races typically open for registration a few weeks before they take place (Jan, May and Nov, respectively.)

I wasn't selected. What are my options to get into the marathon?

  • NYC Marathon general drawing (expected to open in February and then the lottery taking place in March)
    • NYRR Member-Only Second Chance Drawing after.
  • Charity Partners
    • Officially opens immediately after the lottery drawing takes place in, however you should reach out/contact charities early and express your interest ahead of time, they all fill up fast.
  • NYCM Virtual Guaranteed Entry
    • Lottery opened in June last year, costs $186.
  • NYRR 5K or 10K Philanthropic Member tier
    • $5000 or more membership gets automatic entry.
  • Time qualifying (see the bottom of this post)
  • 15+ NYC Marathon finishes

You can still run NYRR races, work toward 4 out of 6 for the NYC Half, use the standby list, and volunteer. Those races just won't count toward 9+1.

Which races are eligible?

On the race calendar, races that count toward qualifying have a 9+1 tag. You can also filter "race types" to just 9+1.

Only Jan–Mar 2027 races have been officially announced so far. The rest of the table below uses 2026 dates as a placeholder for the time being.

When can I sign up for these races?

NYRR releases races in 4 quarterly drops. Races open at 12:00pm ET.

  • Jan–Mar 2027: Members on Wed, Oct 14, and the public on Fri, Oct 16
  • Apr–Jun 2027: TBA (last year: late January)
  • Jul–Sep 2027: TBA (last year: early May)
  • Oct–Dec 2027: TBA (last year: June)

Member Plus and Family Plus are gone. Existing Plus members were moved to standard membership on 8/19 and got a prorated refund. All NYRR members now get the 2-day advance registration window for most non-drawing races.

I don't see any available races?

Races have been selling out within minutes of release. Be ready at noon on release day. Subscribing to NYRR emails or following NYRR on social media is the best way to hear about releases.

Members can also join the Member-Only Standby List for sold-out races. Invitations usually go out a week or two before the race, but can come as late as 48 hours before. It's first come, first served, so sign up as soon as the standby list opens.

Do I have to run the race to get credit, or just sign up?

Yes, you have to finish the race. Most races have generous cutoff times, so if you're not at your best you can usually run/walk and still get credit. If you plan to go slower than usual, please move back to a corral closer to your expected pace.

+1 Volunteer Opportunities

NYRR is still finalizing its 2027 volunteer calendar. It says there will be "ample" volunteer opportunities for Passholders to complete their +1.

All opportunities are listed on the volunteer opportunity page. Make sure the one you pick has the "9+1 credit" tag.

If everything is full, check the page during the week before a race. NYRR sends a reminder email to registered volunteers that week, which often leads to cancellations and reopening spots.

Medical professionals who meet the medical volunteer requirements usually have many +1 eligible opportunities available.

I'm finishing 9+1 in 2026. How do I know I got into the 2027 Marathon?

Nothing changed for this year. Log in to your NYRR account, Guaranteed Entry panel on your dashboard shows your progress for each year. Note that your membership also has to be active on 12/31/2026.

NYRR will tell you your status before the claim period, which is usually in February.

  • Your 2026 entry is only good for the 2027 marathon and can't be rolled forward to 2028 or later.
  • If you already have a 2027 marathon entry through another method, completing 2026 9+1 doesn't earn you anything extra.
  • Late-2026 volunteer spots fill quickly.

Other NYRR qualifying opportunities:

  • 4 out of 6 - NYC Half (still open to all NYRR members, no Pass needed)
    • Complete 4 of these races in a year to guarantee entry to the next year's NYC Half:
      • Manhattan 10K
      • NYC Half
      • Brooklyn Half
      • Queens 10K
      • Bronx 10M
      • Staten Island Half
    • Virtual NYC Half and Virtual Brooklyn Half also count if you pay for the "Medal" tier, and you can combine them with running the same in-person race.
  • Virtual Racing - Brooklyn Half
    • Completing 6 eligible virtual races has guaranteed entry to the next year's Brooklyn Half. Check the virtual racing page for the 2027 list.
    • You can also guarantee next year's Brooklyn Half by volunteering at this year's Brooklyn Half, including the expo.
  • Time Qualifying
    • A qualifying time at any NYRR half marathon or the NYC Marathon guarantees entry to all 3 marquee races the next year: NYC Half, Brooklyn Half, and NYC Marathon.
    • A qualifying half time at a non-NYRR race lets you apply for the NYC Half and Brooklyn Half.
    • A qualifying marathon time at a non-NYRR race lets you apply for the NYC Marathon. The actual cutoff will likely well below the posted standard, in recent years it has been ~15-20mins below the qualifying time. For 2026 it was 22 minutes and 52 seconds faster than the published age-and-gender qualifying standards.

For everyone not running the marathon: a self-guided half marathon through 10 NYC bakeries

I know most of this sub is in marathon mode right now (good luck to everyone running!). But for those of us who aren't, and didn't get into the Bakery Run, I made a self-guided version you can do any day (not affiliated with the event).
Flour Power: The Half (13.7 miles). Starts at Radio Bakery in Greenpoint, goes through Williamsburg and Bed-Stuy, over the Brooklyn Bridge and up through the East Village to Madison Square Park. 10 bakeries along the way, including Saison, L'Appartement 4F, Elbow, Librae, Hani's, La Cabra and From Lucie, plus a few history stops.
Flour Power: Downtown Bakeries (4.8 miles) if you want something shorter: Union Square to Little Island with Veniero's, Ferrara, Dominique Ansel and Magnolia.
It runs in an app I built called Stride Stories. As you reach each stop, a short story plays in your earbuds: who started the bakery, what put it on the map, a bit of history from the block. Your own music keeps playing and just dips for each story.
It's free and in beta on iPhone right now:
Open stridestories.com/beta?src=reddit-runnyc on your phone. It walks you through Apple's TestFlight app.
Open Stride Stories, go to Explore, pick New York and tap Flour Power.
Download the tour on Wi-Fi before you head out.
Check bakery hours before you go, since a few sell out early. I'd love any feedback, either in the app (You tab) or here. And if there's a bakery I missed, tell me!

Carb Loading for Type 1

• Upvotes

I am a type 1 diabetic with an insulin pump. This is my first marathon and I was wondering how and if other type 1 runners carb load? What carbs do you consume and when? I’m running to finish and not for a specific time if that matters.

Long Run Recs

Gooooood morning! Congratulations and good luck to all the soon to be NYC marathon runners! I’ll be joining you all next year but this year I’m running the Phoenix marathon! My long runs are beginning to get lengthy and my current route in queens is becoming a bit boring 😅 Any recommendations for a 17 mile long run this Saturday?!

New York City Council is expected to vote today and banish horse carriages from Central Park. The loop could be a whole lot less stinky by 2028.

Having to reduce to almost nothing during taper?

Legs have felt over-cooked all throughout taper ever since peak week two weeks ago (had been averaging 45 mpw across the whole block, peak week was 55). Skipped a bunch of runs last week and this week to try and rest them, but calves are still feeling stiff/tight as hell and it’s frankly hard to imagine they could endure 26 miles of pounding in this state.

Got an MRI and thankfully confirmed there’s no tear or acute injury - doctor says they’re just overloaded and that I’m still recovering from peek weak and the cumulative fatigue of the whole training block, including a 14-mile long run I did last Saturday during week 1 of taper which the doctor says delayed my recovery 🤦‍♂️

I’m cleared to run the marathon, but was basically told not to run for the next 10 days except maybe 1-2 short and easy 3 milers next week.

I know everyone says you can’t lose fitness that quickly during taper, but it still feels less than ideal to stop running entirely for such a long time right before the race 😅 Anyone dealt with anything similar in the past, or dealing with it now? Would love to hear how things turned out or any general thoughts/advice!

Free vs. Paid Medal Engraving

I'm leaving NYC late Monday, and would love to get my medal engraved after the race. When I did my last marathon we did one of the free engravings (lululemon) and waited ~45 mins, but I recall other brands having much longer waits.

Are there any medal engraving here that are free and pretty short (either Sunday afternoon/evening or Monday morning)? Alternatively, are there other paid ones that are so much shorter that it's worth the money?

I don't want to spend my last day in the city standing in line for hours, so weighing out free vs. paid options.

Grandstand logistics help

Looking forward to cheering my husband on at his first marathon in just about 9 days! His parents and I have grand stand tickets but really have no details about security/ logistics.

Any insights on bag policy? I'll be carrying a backpack with his jacket/ shoes etc

Should we still plan a meet up point away from the park or will we be able to easily meet up with him if he comes to the grandstand area?

Any other advice would be incredibly helpful-TIA!
Most importantly good luck to all our runners!

A grief post relative to NYRR

Feeling a little sad and pushed out of NYRR races. I am just not mentally able to add feverishly trying to register to clamber over other runners for races to my list of things to do.

This post isn't for the haters, but for those of us who genuinely liked participating in the casual nature of the races year after year.

Just sharing some of my favorite NYRR memories:

My husband passed away last year - I started running NYRR races with him while he was doing 9+1 many years ago as a way for me to tag along and do something new while he had been participating for eons. It seemed back then the volume of runners was so managable that you could really pick exactly what you wanted to do and when. His favorite volunteer spot was giving out carnations at the Mini 10K - I would run the race and he would be at the end to give me a flower (and a kiss!)

After having to defer several times, I finally ran NYC Half twice - the first time 10 weeks after he died. My friends rallied on 42nd Street and made me feel like a celebrity. Despite grief absolutely ravaging my body physically, I had a great race. I ran again this year as a nod to my past year of grief, and took 5 1/2 minutes off that time.

My first half ever was Lebow! I remember seeing runners at races with the beanies on and thinking how badass they were - a winter half, and all those hills! I feel like there is something lightly gritty about saying you ran it :)

Of course my favorite memories are the years my husband and I ran NYCM - always separately. I loved seeing that beautiful man cry at the end when he finished. I loved running through Brooklyn and the feeling of such magnitude that the race has on that day. I lost my chaptstick somewhere early in the race and my husband was able to pass a friend's off to me on 1st Ave. I wore his NYCM singlet from 2014 for Brooklyn Half last year.

I was inspired to write this post after returning from Chi Mara (hot hot hot!) and really hoping I would somehow end up being able to register for 2027 Lebow, maybe as a final race for my NYRR journey. Alas, all sold out too soon. A reminder that everything in life is in seasons. Love, life, and running, is ephemeral.

Marathon Insurance

Hi everyone-
I purchased race insurance.
I won’t be able to run this year due to Achilles and knee pain. I have a sports med appointment Nov 4, the earliest they can fit me in. Will this make it too late for me to get a refund? Apparently I have to have a form filled out by a doctor verifying my injury.
Looking forward to running in 2027!

Any slow runners in Wave 1?

Good morning friends,

This is my second NYC Marathon and from Wave 5 last year I was placed in Wave 1 this year as I raised $ for Charity. I am worried that all people will be super fast and I will be on their way + that I will run majority of the race alone (which I don’t want). Is there anyone here that is in Wave 1 and plans to run / walk or approx 5hrs finish time? Thank you so much in advance & see you all in 10 days!

Additional Ticket to share for Member Night on Tuesday, October 27?

I attempted to register for this NYRR Member Night ahead of the upcoming marathon, but while it said tickets were still available, my registration did not successfully go through.

If any of you registered but is unable to make it, or has an extra ticket to share, would you please DM me? I would really appreciate it! Thank you!

Pretty much just the title, any discounts or anything on restaurants? I’m trying to figure out where I should take my family who came to support me after the race.

Marathon Volunteer Breakfast?

Hi,
Wondering if anyone else who is volunteering at the marathon or has volunteered in the past can give me some more background on this.
This Saturday is a breakfast and walkthrough for volunteers. It’s on Staten Island near the starting line. It’s an optional event.

Basically trying to figure out if it’s absolutely necessary to go to since it would be a long commute on public transit for me. (Obviously, I know it’s going to be a trek marathon morning.)

If this Saturday’s event is worth going to, I’m going to do it…but just trying to gauge it all. Thanks in advance - and excited to cheer all the marathoners on!

Questions about deferral

Hey yall!! Sadly I’m most likely deferring my 2026 nyc marathon to 2027 due to injury. Would I be able to still pick up my bib and shirt if I do defer beforehand?

Curious if anyone has picked up the bib and shirt then deferred online?

Let me know if anyone has had this experience
