/r/roanoke needs moderators!

Have you ever wanted to be called a fascist asshole for attempting to maintain a local online community? If so, I have the perfect opportunity for you! /r/roanoke needs a few moderators.

What this actually entails 99.9% of the time: removing spam and rule-breaking posts, approving posts/comments that automod removed, and answering modmail.

It is unpaid, it is repetitive, and a nonzero number of people will be unpleasant to you in modmail. If that sounds fine, keep reading.

What we're looking for:

You live in or near Roanoke and have for a while. You should know the difference between Grandin and Garden City without looking it up.

You have an account with some history here. New or throwaway accounts won't be considered.

You can actually invest some time into maintaining the community. While the title of reddit moderator comes with unlimited prestige and power, we really need people who will do more than show up once every 4 weeks to maintain an active status.

You can enforce a rule you personally disagree with and you can leave a thread alone when it's just people being annoying rather than breaking a rule.

You're willing to disclose conflicts of interest. Local business owner, journalist, political campaign staff, realtor, nonprofit board, anything where you have a stake in how a topic gets discussed here. We, for better or worse, sometimes become a battleground over such topics.

If you're interested, please submit a response via this Google form: https://forms.gle/jm4iasULR3nPcZhWA

Looking for queer community

Hey there, I'm a long time Roanoke resident. I am also a trans woman. I'm having the worst month of my life, went through something very traumatic a few weeks ago, and am feeling very isolated. I'd like to get to know more trans femmes (and queer people in general) outside of my friend circle. I know about the Diversity Center and I do want to check out some of their events. I also know about The Park, but that is too frenetic for me in my current state. I'm just anxious and vulnerable right now.

Does anybody have any advice, and can point me in the direction of some low-key queer spaces where I can meet other queer people, especially trans femmes? If you're trans femme yourself, feel free to DM me about this if you don't feel comfortable talking about it here.

Went for my first time last night and was seriously impressed. Honduran food is delicious! It was reasonably priced for the portions you get as well. Y’all go check them out!

Moving to Roanoke Moving to the Area

Hope everyone has a great weekend planned!

My wife and I are planning on moving to the area in 6 months.

We’re leaning towards the Salem area. Any thoughts the area locals could give us would be GREATLY appreciated.

For reference - We’re homebodies and don’t need a big city feel. Our budget is fluid, but we’re thinking about $425k (3/2/2, preferably with a basement).

Any thoughts on Salem would be appreciated, or any other towns nearby.

Thank you!!!

Theater review: Death By Design, Bear Theatre

I missed the opening weekend of this play, but got to see it tonight (10/23). Two more performances left - Saturday and Sunday. Highly recommend it! Excerpt from my review below.

-----------------------

This production is deeply satisfying: spookiness, intrigue, abundant humor, and fun characters. The night I attended (10/23) the audience hooted with laughter, gasped with shock, and delivered a standing ovation at the end. That communal experience of creating a shared reality together is electric. If you haven't seen it yet, you really should go. This is community theater at its best.

I absolutely love that Bear Theater includes local playwrights in their lineup of plays. This script, written by local author Stacey Upton, is strongest in its humorous elements. Upton creates a "trapped in a remote house, the murderer is one of us" kind of stories that is reasonably satisfying, if a bit rife with loose ends.

...

It's a play of juxtaposed contrasts. We both love and hate certain characters; we both trust them and doubt them. Some are both bumbling and scheming, devious and innocent. The play overall is realistic, but not. And there is comfort in that. We like murder mysteries and thrillers because we know they aren't real. We can feel fear and discomfort in a controlled environment -- and laugh our heads off alongside strangers who feel the same things we're feeling. It's cozy and creepy, all at once. Don't miss this one!

------------------------

Full review (including my party-pooper take on the script's loose ends) is here: https://roanoketheaterreviews.blogspot.com/2026/10/death-by-design-bear-theatre.html

Anyone else surprised this place is still open? I went down the rabbit hole of looking up the owner and can’t believe after all her medical malpractices this place is still afloat.

Hoot & Holler

I’ll start by saying I absolutely love these events! The storytelling is always amazing, and there is a palpable sense of connection and community in the room the entire time. I love what it has done to bring people together. I am in no way trying to bash the event with what I’m about to say.

However, the unexpected Joe Cobb appearance at the end gave me the biggest ick. Ok great Lee Hunsaker day, she deserves it, truly.

Her mother was sitting behind me and told me to contain myself because while everyone else was roaring with applause for him I was yelling, “tell us about the data centers Joe! What about all the money y’all took from the schools just to buy a golf course! Is that what the handshake looked like when you sold out our town for a data center! What about the money Joe! What about the shady deals!”

Whatever. I know he didn’t hear me. That guy sucks. No regrets.

Question Does this exist?

I'm looking for a job.

I don't need a full time gig. My bills are paid.

I'm looking for something I can do a few hours at a time with very limited human interaction, making a couple hundo per week. Preferably something physical. Also preferably not cleaning, though that would be considered.

Perhaps sorting, organizing shelves, unpacking things, moving stuff, restocking. Low-level grunt work that is almost mindless, but particularly satisfying for the right person.

Ultimately something that someone is going to pay me to do that ends up giving them time back to do the important things.

What say you, Roanoke Reddit. Is this out there?

Struggling to find a good paying job

Hello,

Throwaway account as my employer frequents this. I am struggling to find a good paying job ($22 an hour or salary $55K at minimum). I moved from California to back here years ago and have been struggling. I moved back for family reasons. In California, I was making around $70K in salary and now I’ve been reduced down to $18 an hour.

I have a bachelor’s degree from Radford in communications from 2022 and it seems like everywhere I apply thinks I’m overqualified. I don’t think I’m asking for much with the above minimum but I’m completely stumped and don’t know what to do.

For family reasons, I cannot pick up and move back to California. My mom is very ill and will likely pass away in the next 3 years.

Can anyone point me in the direction? Looking for coordinator roles or social media marketing . I’m also open to Project management roles. Are there any positions paying at least $22 an hour or a salary of 55K?

Looking for Honest Reviews on Local Collision Centers!

Thumbnail

My vehicle was recently involved in a minor accident, and State Farm provided me with a list of recommended collision centers for the repairs. I’ve already looked through the Google reviews for each shop, but I’d love to hear from anyone who has had firsthand experience with any of these locations! I’m especially interested in hearing about the quality of their work, communication throughout the repair process, turnaround times, and whether you were satisfied with the results. Any recommendations, positive experiences, or places you’d suggest avoiding would be greatly appreciated! I just want to make sure I’m choosing a reputable shop that will do quality work. Thanks in advance!

Question Is there anywhere to get aVehicle Inspection while you wait?

I lived in Northern VA for years and there were vehicle inspections available literally everywhere in various gas stations and mechanic shops. I'm in Blacksburg now and they all require an all day situation, most here are backed up for a few weeks even. My dog is recovering (hopefully) from an injury and I can't really leave him alone all day so I was wondering if Roanoke or anywhere around there had stations like they have up in NOVA?

Thank you guys for all the responses! I got an appointment tomorrow and it seems like it should be quick enough for what I was looking for :)
