Years Long Slump

• Upvotes

I've been in a years long reading slump and I've tried to get myself out many times with Bye, Baby or The Cartographers something or other.

When it comes to classics I loved Catcher in the Rye and Tender is the Night. Otherwise, as a teen, I really enjoyed Meg Cabot and books like Nick and Norahs Infinite Playlist. In general, I enjoy a good twist.

Can anyone help reccomend something really gripping, that could get me out of my slump? I'll take any suggestions at this point.

First post be kind

Hello everyone, as tittle says, I am basically a total beginner.

I am 22 and recently, through instagram, I have kinda wanted to start reading more as more videos come up about “you should read this” or “what did you think about this book”.

Idk what it is but something I’ve developed is an interest in how it all goes down. How do you pick a good book that isn’t too long but also not boring/super informative yk?

Books seem like they are meant to be fun so If anyone can recommend me some love story, or heartbreaking story, or entertaining story, I’d very much appreciate it. I will try to reply (if anyone replies) but if I don’t, thank you in advance

Favorite books with third-person omniscient narrator?

Hey! As the title says: Which are your favorite books that have a third-person omniscient narrator? I came to learn that I love this type of narration and I wanna read more books that feature it.

My favorite example so far was "Perfume: The Story of a Murderer" by Patrick Suskind. It has a great all-knowing narrator that can always give small insights into other characters' lives.

What should I read next?

Dear Reddit, please help me pick my next fantasy or sci-fi read!

Some of the books that I loved or liked: DCC, Dune, Lord of the Rings trilogy, Combat Codes, RJB Ana and Din series + City of Stairs, the Culture books (Use of Weapons and Player of Games the most), The Works of Vermin, N.K. Jemisin books, Roger Zelazny, R.J. Barker books, Arkady Martine: A Memory Called Empire & A Desolation Called Peace, Ann Leckie Imperial Radch series, Rebecca Roanhorse: Black Sun trilogy, Blindsight by Peter Watts, Name of the Wind, Blacktongue Thief + Thrice Bound Fool (but not Daughter’s War), Gideon the Ninth, Ursula K. Le Guin’s works, Murderbot, Terry Pratchett, Adrian Tchaikovsky, Stanisław Lem, Slow Gods, Steerswoman series, Stephen King, The Raven Scholar.

Some of what I did not like and/or DNF’d: Hyperion, Joe Abercrombie (except The Devils, which I loved), Brandon Sanderson, Malazan, Wheel of Time, Gideon’s sequels, Baru Cormorant, Octavia Butler, Throne of Glass, Neuromancer, Babel, Piranesi, Red Rising, The Expanse, Asimov, Dresden Files, Farseer.

I seem to like competent protagonists, who do not make too many emotional and illogical decisions. No K.J. Parker for me, though. It would be great if the protagonist wasn’t a teenager. Minimal to no romance and no historical fiction, preferably. I am also usually not that keen on stories where the protagonist starts as a simple person and ends with godlike powers or turns out to be a lost child of god, etc.

That said, shower me with your recommendations, please!

Suggestion Thread need help finding books for a friend

Hi! So my friends and I have done Secret Santa almost every year since we were about 14 and this year I have gotten my oldest friend. We’ve known each other since we were 8 and now we are 25 and we are both big readers. For Secret Santa this year I wanted to get a book per year since we have known each other, and preferably the book came out in that year(im not die hard set on this)so 2009-2026. I also (hopefully) plan to read all these books before we do the gift exchange and write a blurb for it with my thoughts.

To describe her type of reading, I’ll use her own words “i love a dominant female in a realistic fiction overcoming something hard like either for her family or herself. not a huge romance girly personally but i love it as a growing point for the lead but not as the main focus “ (do yall think remarkable bright creatures fits this?) Also to give a little background info on her, shes in her final year of law school at USC.

I will say the only book I’m slightly set on is the hunger games but only because it was a big part of our childhood and was one of the first movies we say together as a friend group. And the book can be fiction or nonfiction

I would really appreciate everyone’s help!! Thank you!!

Anything like Dungeon Crawler?

I finished all these recently and I had so much fun with them.

I am not a girl who has ever enjoyed romance books, or anything predictable. I want something new, exciting, surprise me, something I did not see coming.

If I can write it and come up with it it may bore me lol.

Not slasher, but edge of my seat, I mean I read Stephen king so some horror is fine, but the adventure and humor in these had me having such a great time!

Any suggestions like these?

I was laid off my job recently, spending all my job time hunting, when I'm not in reading. So these books will be library finds, but I'm in a small town so they may go on a list for when I get a job, which is fine.

Thanks so much!

Suggestion Thread Book recommendations for my friend’s 27th birthday!

My friend (26F, turning 27) is an avid reader, and I’d love to gift her a book or two, but I’m not sure what to pick…

Some books she loves:
Circe – Madeline Miller
The Handmaid’s Tale – Margaret Atwood
East of Eden – John Steinbeck
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo – Taylor Jenkins Reid
The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns – Khaled Hosseini
Persepolis – Marjane Satrapi
Piranesi – Susanna Clarke

She has also read The Idiot and A Little Life, though I’m not sure how she felt about them.

She is not a big fan of Colleen Hoover’s books. She’s also a huge horror fan, isn’t big on romance, and doesn’t enjoy Jane Austen. English isn’t her first language, so she finds authors like Dostoevsky and Edgar Allan Poe difficult to read.

What books would you recommend? I’m open to any genre.

Can anyone donate some books pleaseuhh

so... where i live is kinda not the best place, it's in khyber pakhtunkhwa, pakistan, where access to almost everything is limited. i've been really desperate to educate myself, so i'm looking for books, anything from old textbooks to classics, history, philosophy, literally anything educational. even books you don't need anymore would mean a lot. i'm not looking for ebooks cuz my parents get mad at me for being on my phone all the time. the only thing is i can only receive them through doorstep delivery since i can't really go outside or go to school.

Reading Critically 2

Asked about how to read critically a few days ago here

I've been trying to read Kafka's The Trial with attention to all the details. As someone who doesn't usually enjoy reading, I must say that this level of immersion does making reading feel more enjoyable, kind of like a game of detective-work. However, I have been itching to read certain other books, but I don't think I would have the time to read both at once while giving each of them 100% of my attention. I saw some people say online though that it can be a good idea to read a book once just to get accustomed to the plot and then re-read it in an attempt to do a critical analysis of the literature. I was wondering if you guys think this would be a good idea. The book I was going to read is Dostoyevsky's The Brother's Karamazov. I normally wouldn't do this but I've really been wanting to read it, but at the same time I don't want to abandon The Trial and then restart it later. Would it be more wise for me to finish The Trial or would it be fine if I read both at once?

edit: Upon further reflection, I have no idea if what I'm doing is reading critically, active reading, or deep reading

Looking for short book to read with girlfriend

In a couple days my long distance girlfriend will be staying at mine for 6 days. I would like to find a short mystery/adventure book so that each night we can read each other 10-20 pages and have finished the book by the end of the 6 days. It would be fun if there was a continuous buildup throughout the week so we're excited to read the next part each night. I would appreciate any suggestions (can be from a different genre if you think it would be suitable).
