BTW I'm saying this since the first chatgpt drop, that we should call these "VI" as virtual intelligence, and reserve the term "AI" to some serious stuff in the future.

I've been saying this since the first time I played videogames, but AI is basically any computer program that attempts at imitating human behaviour. AKA when the computer plays against you or tries to perform tasks like a human would.

Intelligence isn't a one track thing. Chess AI is better at chess than any human, it's artificial and it makes decisions during the game. We've always called that AI, so why shift the definition suddenly? Call LLM's and machine learning whatever you want I guess, but AI isn't some magic term only meant for some super intelligent machines.

Machine learning has existed as a concept since prior to even the AI you’re referring to (~1959)

The new boom in hype and pretending this is all a novel concept is mostly attributed to a few things:

Computer and network technology actually becoming efficient enough to scale the concept into practice

The transformer technology that Google white papered, which became the backbone of LLMs

Shit tons of marketing and branding poured into “AI” in the last 4 years

You’re forgetting, being useful.

People don’t use chatbots more now because they are marketed better than a decade ago. They use them now because they are significantly—measurably—better and more useful.

This is absolutely true and I would say is a byproduct of the first and second reasons, but yeah you are right they have made significant strides in the actual effectiveness
