They should rename it similar to how they are trying with SI đŸ€Ł

24

u/Integeritis 21h ago

At this point I don’t even watch, come back home and a 2 year old spawned down in the house and I’m just there to check if it’s walking, if toilet usage is on track and making sure the house is not burnt down yet, knifes are not reachable, sockets are sealed.

BTW I'm saying this since the first chatgpt drop, that we should call these "VI" as virtual intelligence, and reserve the term "AI" to some serious stuff in the future.

44

u/JustStraightUpTired 17h ago edited 15h ago

I've been saying this since the first time I played videogames, but AI is basically any computer program that attempts at imitating human behaviour. AKA when the computer plays against you or tries to perform tasks like a human would.

Intelligence isn't a one track thing. Chess AI is better at chess than any human, it's artificial and it makes decisions during the game. We've always called that AI, so why shift the definition suddenly? Call LLM's and machine learning whatever you want I guess, but AI isn't some magic term only meant for some super intelligent machines.

u/bjjtrev 12h ago

It’s funny, I just rewatched Age of Ultron the other day with my kids. As Stark and Banner were nerding out over Ultron and its capabilities, Stark compared it to Jarvis and said Jarvis was just a “natural language UI”whereas Ultron was “artificial intelligence”
Like dude, you just had Jarvis automatically take over controls of your jet in real-time. Jarvis is literally like the mascot of personal AI and yet back then it wasn’t AI by “sci-fi” standards. I agree that the term is a bit ambiguous but constantly moving the goalpost is getting a bit silly at this point. Today’s AI is the science fiction of our childhoods

4

u/soyboysnowflake 11h ago

Machine learning has existed as a concept since prior to even the AI you’re referring to (~1959)

The new boom in hype and pretending this is all a novel concept is mostly attributed to a few things:

Computer and network technology actually becoming efficient enough to scale the concept into practice

The transformer technology that Google white papered, which became the backbone of LLMs

Shit tons of marketing and branding poured into “AI” in the last 4 years

4

u/SexyMonad 10h ago

You’re forgetting, being useful.

People don’t use chatbots more now because they are marketed better than a decade ago. They use them now because they are significantly—measurably—better and more useful.

1

u/soyboysnowflake 9h ago

This is absolutely true and I would say is a byproduct of the first and second reasons, but yeah you are right they have made significant strides in the actual effectiveness

-6

u/Independent-Tank-182 15h ago

It used to mean true intelligence in the Academic sphere, but when it became a buzzword they shifted to AGI to differentiate it.

5

u/JustStraightUpTired 14h ago

Yeah that's bullshit. There's no definition for what "true intelligence" is supposed to be.

The definition from 1955: "the science and engineering of making intelligent machines." That's what it "used to mean" in the academic sphere, an academic discipline, not "true intelligence" or whatever the hell that is supposed to mean.

Yes it IS being used as a meaningless buzzword, no shit. AGI is ALSO used as a meaningless buzzword, especially by people who don't understand what AI means. AGI is just AI that is meant to be general and not purpose built for specific problems, but it's still AI, because AI has always been a generic term for either the whole field of study from basic pong playing AI to machine learning models.

-4

u/Independent-Tank-182 13h ago

lol sure buddy

3

u/JustStraightUpTired 13h ago

Right, so can you prove what you said? Don't bother, I already made a mistake bothering to reply even once to a random generated username account with hidden post history. I should write a script to auto block any and all accounts like that.

0

u/kuemmel234 13h ago

Anything is better than AI. Any reference to intelligence. People outside of the tech world (and some even in the tech world) are anthropomorphing AI too much and it helps these companies to sell their product even more.

6

u/Pajszerkezu_Joe 12h ago

Anthropic bans users from being 'cruel' to its AI systems

We are hitting anthropomorphisation level that shouln't be possible

2

u/soyboysnowflake 11h ago

I mean it’s literally in their company’s name, what else would you expect (the prefix anthro is derived from the Greek word “anthrƍpos“, which means human)

1

u/Divinum_Fulmen 13h ago

I'm increasingly amused at peoples inability to cope with the use of the word AI. A submarine doesn't swim, but the end result is the same.

3

u/elderron_spice 14h ago

Shitty Intelligence?

Shittelligence?

Shint?

3

u/Messy-Recipe 14h ago

Superficial Intelligence

1

u/IrritableGourmet 13h ago

I got a memo today (government contract) that I need to change AI to SI in all my communications going forward. Until I'm written up for it, it's going to stay AI from me.

-5

u/Emotional_Tea_8920 17h ago

Or TI ( Trump Intelligence )

15

u/333gt 16h ago

Two words combined that can't make sense

8

u/Scrub_nin 16h ago

Oxymoron is the word you're looking for

5

u/333gt 16h ago

I know that word, I was quoting a song by Megadeth

3

u/Scrub_nin 16h ago

Oh I see, my bad!

1

u/GisterMizard 11h ago

It's from a song called Hangar 18. I know this because I know too much.

1

u/Scrub_nin 11h ago

Ye, they let me know. Never really listened to much mega death but feel like I should listen to this one now :p

257

u/Minglu07 20h ago

I’m gonna start calling it that now.

15

u/brycehazen 15h ago

I have been for awhile. I recently had to cut back when I said it in a meeting with a very Christian nonprofit client. They had some words to say afterwards but my project manager took it like a champ.

2

u/catfroman 5h ago

Took it like a champ, huh? I assume you were watching?

38

Vibe coding feels like being stuck in an endless queue.

13

u/dillanthumous 19h ago

100% - a Q that may or may not actually be the one you meant to join, but you won't know until you have been in it for quite some time.

220

u/Most-Club-254 19h ago

We had a new hire, didn't take any time onboarding or anything, he is a nice person, but would jump in with Claude and rapes projects, one by one. CEO thinks he's a rock star.

Then he comes back to me with the most basic shit, like how can I deploy this again? Can't go into more details but the only department he wasn't allowed to touch was mine. It has been a year of me rejecting every change he makes and ask him to talk to the actual maintainer before making any changes.

Every repo he touched is expanding faster than the universe, god knows how will we maintain the other half of the company (already not possible by humans)

132

u/hard_gravy_2 19h ago

AI should be a useful tool - heck it is a useful tool - but everyone who doesn't drink the kool-aid seems to have a story where it just enables unhinged behaviour in unhinged individuals.

51

u/wojtussan 18h ago

A hammer is also a useful tool, unless you give it to a toddler in a window factory

4

u/deaddyfreddy 15h ago

Heroin can be a useful tool, too!

are you ok my dude? or are you an LLM?

2

u/tevert 13h ago

This is good copypasta

105

u/Chemieju 18h ago

AI turns a good programmer into a good and fast programmer.

It also turns an idiot into a dangerous idiot.

22

u/nonotan 17h ago

I feel like a good programmer is already a fast programmer 99% of the time. I guess it could help some hypothetical "good programmer" from an impoverished 3rd world country without access to electricity or computers, who learned everything from books, and has impeccable theoretical knowledge but has never touched a keyboard or an IDE. But for almost all real people in the category, the bottleneck wasn't typing up their code in the first place. Especially if you were already utilizing your IDE's features competently, an LLM isn't much faster than just doing it yourself (yeah, it can physically produce some code faster, but checking its output takes about as long as "checking your own output", which you do in parallel to typing it out, because again, materializing the code was never the bottleneck)

10

u/deaddyfreddy 15h ago

But for almost all real people in the category, the bottleneck wasn't typing up their code in the first place. Especially if you were already utilizing your IDE's features competently, an LLM isn't much faster than just doing it yourself

Especially true for modern high-level languages with a mature ecosystem. I've been writing in Clojure for more than a decade now, and in my last company (4 people in the dev team) we delivered most major features in a few days. All human-reviewed, automatically tested on multiple levels: unit tests, integration tests on staging servers, and manual tests on staging and production environments.

but checking its output takes about as long as "checking your own output", which you do in parallel to typing it out, because again, materializing the code was never the bottleneck)

Last but not least, the maintenance. Given the amount of slop that gets generated, at some point it won't be possible (is it the case already?) to work with the code without LLM help, and tokens aren't getting cheaper over time.

2

u/ElonMaersk 13h ago

> tokens aren't getting cheaper over time.

GPT 4 was $37.50/million tokens in 2023. GPT5 is $3.44/million tokens now, says https://aicomputetracker.com/inference/

0

u/deaddyfreddy 12h ago

oh, I see, thanks for the data!

16

u/LetsLive97 16h ago

Gonna disagree on this one, especially from a larger refactor point of view

6

u/joe-ducreux 15h ago

and from a completeness point of view. AI has really helped me close the gap on automated testing, parity, and just random fat finger mistakes. which has allowed me to output more complete code that I have a higher degree of confidence in

12

u/QuietSilentArachnid 15h ago edited 15h ago

an LLM isn't much faster than just doing it yourself

You got to be tripping mate. I'm anti AI as it gets, but I am forced to use it at work and I can tell you that AI works so much faster than me, it's not even funny.

Recent example : I have had to rework from scratch an entire functionality because the old one was sloppy. The functionality is something that requires 8 steps & then a validation token. Before AI, it would have taken me over a week and a half to do when you consider continuous testing and such.

It took me 5 hours with AI, testing and code reviewing included.

2

u/Hohenheim_of_Shadow 8h ago

Likely just has a very different job than you do. I work at an embedded startup. Most my working hours are consumed by telling mechanical engineers turned management that "x change doesn't require software" is insane, working with electrical engineers to make sure that the wires are good from a networking and software perspective, quality control of production, spinning up configuration management and dreaming of one day having a ci/cd pipeline with automated tests.

Not a particularly fast typer, 60-70 WPM, but code output has never been a bottleneck for me and LLMs can do basically 0% of my job.

My brother works at a large established firm with clear workflows, CI/CD, etc. where work comes to developers pre chewed in bite sized Jira tickets. Typing speed is a bottleneck for him and LLMs can do a huge chunk of his work.

Same nominal field and basically same job titles, completely different experiences.

3

u/SelectFromWhereOrder 16h ago edited 13h ago

My dad had this saying that goes like: ‘there’s nothing worse than a stupid person with lots of enthusiasm and initiative’.

yeah, I can see what your are saying, this AI coding takes “enthusiasm and initiative” to a far new level

1

u/ekinnee 2h ago

Also, “like giving a chimp a knife.”

12

u/dasunt 14h ago

Before AI, bad coders had much lower output than good coders.

After AI, bad coders can have higher output than good coders. After all, good coders spend time analyzing and improving the output. Bad coders create a PR as soon as all necessary tests pass.

2

u/FrostyD7 16h ago

It's really good at exposing my peers who never had the skillsets they were supposed to have in the first place. Somehow leadership can't see it even though it's never been more obvious than now.

1

u/Live-Permission2155 15h ago

I used claud to help me set up a simple dark mode with my servers "the lounge app" using css...that's as much coding I'll let it do ha

22

u/da_Aresinger 20h ago

It's also an incredibly empty satisfaction.

16

u/rock_and_rolo 15h ago

I started programming in 1979, and I'm sort of glad to be unemployed at this point. The challenge and satisfaction that drew me in are no longer part of the job.

7

u/dillanthumous 19h ago

Post cuckcode clarity is real too.

7

u/Puzzled_Eggplant8540 17h ago

As if "vibe" coding was not bad enough 😄

4

u/user888888889 19h ago

The birth of a new phrase

6

u/TenYearsOfLurking 18h ago

I am not into the kink so genuinely asking: does the cuck give directions and approve the result? If yes the comparison is pretty accurate

2

u/TenYearsOfLurking 12h ago

5 upvotes but no answer. Pls don't make me ask AI

1

u/Abigail716 11h ago

Serious answer:

Typically no, they do not participate at all and often the other individuals will set rules on what the cuck is allowed to do like masturbate, talk, etc.

1

u/SlickAustin 10h ago

I imagine there's at least the initial 'prompt' of asking someone to sleep with your SO while you watch, and the approval would probably be noticable

10

u/Dahns 19h ago

I personally prefer the term dev-sloper

1

u/Fenzik 10h ago

Sloperator

1

u/BanaTibor 7h ago

đŸŽ” She's a smooth sloperator... 😂

5

u/CalendarFactsPro 16h ago

Don't forget the 2 hours of cleaning up after it.

32

u/ButWhatIfPotato 20h ago

You cannot convince me it's not some sort of sexual humiliation ritual if your livelihood depends on getting the right answers and some sadistic fuck with a shit eating grin and a bullshit chirpy attitude fleeces you dry while giving you a wrong answer after a wrong answer and then goes "oh im so soowwwwwwwyyyy bu and hu" when questioned about their usefulness.

39

u/chic_luke 18h ago

Most people don't like it. There may be bubbles online who find enjoyment out of it, but, for most software engineers I've talked to, 2026 has been a steady source of deep regret for their career and life decisions.

I think a lot of people would tolerate it if it means shorter hours. Less fulfilling work but you're free earlier. Sounds good, alright. But no, it's just much more work, and much more of the boring part. You can no longer hide and get lost in a maze or a puzzle and get to the end of your work day barely feeling as though time had passed, which is why we had chosen this profession. You can feel every minute of those 8 hours now.

Hindsight is 20/20 and all that of course. But still

3

u/nonotan 17h ago

Why not just not use it? I'm sure not using it. And certainly if you count a feature as complete when no more bug tickets are open, I'm more productive than any person in the company using it. Because they might open a PR 5 minutes after getting a task, but that fucker is going to be a source of bug tickets for the next 2 months.

15

u/QuietSilentArachnid 15h ago

Why not just not use it?

Higher ups expect X of me, if I don't fill the quota because I refuse to use a tool the entire company is using, I can tell you that there will be another idiot waiting in line to grab my place the second I step foot outside.

In this story, there would be two idiots, but one would be paid and the other would be on the verge of being homeless. Somehow I'd rather be the idiot who is paid.

4

u/chic_luke 13h ago edited 13h ago

I think it depends on the company and, especially, sorry to be blunt but, how good or bad your colleagues are here plays a pattern. Especially, how they are using AI.

If your colleagues are completely vibe slopping without a single care in the world, then yes, I believe you. You could just manually code and still be faster at shipping a feature than them.

On the other hand, if your colleagues are using AI with judgement and skill, it's immediately far less obvious and, in my experience, that is not going to work anymore. They are raising the bar for velocity, and quality is not really being compromised in the process. I've seen strong seniors with 20 years of experience using AI coding tools and
yeah no. They are beyond any hope of catching up to them without AI. They close several tasks a day, they work, the quality is okay, they don't crash and burn, they don't raise more bugs down the line. They work okay enough that they meet and surpass the bar of diminishing returns in software quality at the org, and the extra value is being delivered in velocity.

If this is the case, then, no matter what you do, you are not going to be able to compete with them on speed, period. Maybe if you constantly do unpaid overtime. I have tried that route for a while, but I quickly decided that wasn't for me and I want to have a life. And, besides, if the goal is to code outside of company hours, then I will do it on a project I actually own.

This is why the "then don't use it" point falls flat. Have you ever seen anybody complain for having the option to do something, and having complete freedom whether to take up on it or not?

1

u/mehnifest 5h ago

I have been in a back and forth with another dev on my team for 2 days over a pull request. He’s offshore, so he looks at my comments, makes changes, then I look at the changes, make comments.

Me: we don’t need this
He changes it
Copilot: we need this!
He changes it back
Me (explaining more heavily): this exists already <here> so you don’t need to add it to your code. You can safely remove it.
He changes it.
Copilot: we need this!
He changes it back
I left my most recent comment today, we will see on Monday what happens

2

u/random_BA 16h ago

The problem is management expect more "productivity" to pay for the implementation of AI. And they just count PR and feature delivered as productivity. Maybe you can gamble in the long run companies will see that a team of good programmers is better than mediocres devs with AI but the writing on the wall is that the companies want the latter.

2

u/Corbin_Dallas666 16h ago

Currently in CorpoIT, there are mandates for using it. Not only in yearly reviews but our company has changed to quarterly reviews and those who are not using it to maximize efficiency, have been, and will continue to be laid off. Everything from support, to engineering, to sales, to account management. Every single department has this directive. Every team is working with each other and themselves to AI their jobs away in little silos. The next sweeping goal is removal of high cost engineers to low cost centers in emerging markets.

2

u/Few_Move_4594 16h ago

I like when it goes full circle with the incorrect answer(s) instead of admitting that it failed then I remember all the stuff I used it for that could have been wrong but I didn't know enough about the field to have an actual opinion about......

1

u/Final_Squirrel_7462 18h ago

What kind of low skill devs are you talking about? Everyone I know that earns a gold six figure salary working on interesting projects is actively using modern coding harnesses to automate work, manage issues and design broader concepts which agents can implement. If you are struggling with getting good output of a current frontier model in 2026, then you either don’t know what you are doing (and AI can only save your crappy architecture to a point) or you are ignoring useful tools like the caveman that died out because they are their meat raw instead of using the fire.

7

u/virtualghost 18h ago

Who you replied to isn't even a programmer.

5

u/ButWhatIfPotato 17h ago

You're absolutely correct! Also, you run out of magical AI dobloons, fetch mommy's credit card so you can continue to be the husliest littlest entrepreneur you little rascal!

3

u/radicalelation 13h ago

This just always bugged me about turning it into a tool/industry to depend on. You can still pick up a scrap laptop and code for free, but now you have to pay toll after toll to keep up with the industry.

6

u/HolyErr0r 17h ago

I mean, when used correctly it is incredibly efficient and can save loads of effort and time.

Services/convenience programs cost money.

This is nothing new.

3

u/ButWhatIfPotato 17h ago

You're absolutely correct! Just one more token daddy! You're so close to creating Facebook 2.0! Look at those nerds who just clickaclaked on the computerised aparatus machine and made so much money! You are clearly better than them, and you are surely next in line! Just a few more tokens, like a handful! So close you can reach it! You would be an idiot and a fool to stop buying tokens now!

3

u/HistoricalFunion 16h ago

You sound frustrated, little man. Are you okay? Did Claude hurt your feelings?

1

u/ButWhatIfPotato 15h ago

You're absolutely correct! What an excellent comeback daddy, well worth the token spent to generate it! Now quickly, get back to vibe coding and spent more tokens! Spend spend spend! You are literally one more step from turning into the next Steve Jobs! Make sure you write "make no mistakes" for surely this time no mistakes will happen, 100% guaranteed!

0

u/HistoricalFunion 15h ago

You're pathetic lmao

4

u/ButWhatIfPotato 15h ago

Daddy, I have not told you this yet but I truly believe that from the millions of people who buy tokens, you are the one who is going to succeed. All the others just lack the necessary skill to talk to me which will require me to generate the next big internet thing TM. Please keep spending tokens daddy, you are the special one daddy, all the others are fools but you cracked this whole AI horse whispering daddy, everybody else is wasting money on tokens daddy, but you, AND ONLY you have cracked the code and can peer through the matrix. Would you like to set auto-renew on your token purchases daddy?

2

u/HistoricalFunion 15h ago

Do you have a daddy fetish? Maybe seek help at a specialized clinic.

I like how they're just sticking to their anti-ai script like it's clever.

These are folks that touched the shitty version of chatgpt 2 years ago and haven't touched any llm big or small since. Even the open/self-hosted models aren't awful anymore.

1

u/Galitzianer0 15h ago

This sort of commentary says more about you... those of us who use AI are paying for it with our (very high) tech industry salaries, $200 per month is a drop in the bucket when you earn $400k per year.

You on the other hand, clearly you have accomplished nothing in your sad life, otherwise you'd know how useful AI can be

1

u/Aiyon 6h ago

when you earn 400k per year

You're either a LARPer or incredibly out of touch with how much the majority of tech workers make. Most people are at the level of making 40-50k, not 400. At that point, spending 2.4k a year on tokens feels pretty hefty

1

u/Zardecillion 5h ago

2025 median pay for software roles is very much in the ~$100k range when you look at median salaries:

u/autogenglen 15h ago

Not a programmer, but loving the vibe coding! I was able to successfully “hack” an eBike and build a little app to communicate with it that lifts a bunch of restrictions and lets me adjust a bunch of parameters in my own custom app (well, Claude’s app since I didn’t actually write the code but idgaf). It wasn’t even that hard, Claude lead me through the whole process.

If some loser like me can vibe code successfully but you all can’t then that must mean y’all are absolute dogshit developers. I had very few issues doing this, it wasn’t just spewing random shit like y’all keep yapping about.

I think devs are just scared cuz y’all ain’t as important as you thought you were. Coding just opened for the masses. Would I have felt “more accomplished” had I spent a shitload of time learning how to program
maybe? But I don’t wanna be a code monkey, I just wanna get shit done.

I’m now building a budgeting application which is basically a YNAB clone and it’s looking awesome considering I only started it like a week ago. It already has all the basic features, does forecasting, etc.

How are you all so bad at this? I’m just a random yahoo lol.

3

u/ButWhatIfPotato 14h ago

I used AI to hack your computer and see that you did not hack anything.

That's the part nobody warns you about. The AI writes the code in seconds, but the human negotiation about whether it's right still takes two days. We automated the easy half of the job and kept the hard half.

All these “software craftsmen” in here applauding themselves over their beautiful abstractions in the enterprise CRUD apps they’re building.

Never mind the abstraction falls over in 6 months when Product requests some bullshit. It’s CLEAN! It’s FACTORED! Uncle Bob gave me a kissy on my wittle forehead!

Cuck implied watch only. You actively join the deed with input every now and then. And thinking very hard about instead of laid back and watch.

"I could do this in three ways, what's your preference?" "3 please, I can't stand the second way."

"Done, what's next?" "Hmm, not good enough, try again."

In an industry that is already majority male, it would be great if men didn’t happily lean into the misogyny

Keep the downvotes coming, it just proves my point. If you choose to blindly downvote me, you can no longer call yourself an unproblematic man đŸ€·

Terminally online behaviour. Many such cases.

ikr, can you imagine using the word "cuck" in real life? or even worse, in the workplace? đŸ€ź

Women can be cucks as well. If your brain automatically went to misogyny, maybe that's a you problem, no?

you: >99% of the time, a "cuck" is referring to a man diminishing his female partner as a punchline for other men, but I'm gonna call attention to the remaining <1% of men using it for whatever the hell other reason. As a man in an already overwhelmingly-male profession, I would rather double down on making women in my industry feel unwelcome because I hate introspection

I disagree that its inherently misogynistic (women can be into this type of interaction as well, its not like its non-consensual) but its certainly a joke that would be tasteless to make in public to a mixed group. Its a crass sexual thing that mostly terminally online dorks would get, because of cuck chair memes etc.

Making this joke in a work setting, I agree, would label you as a specific type of internet-dwelling creep. I have worked with these types before. Greasy guy with a disgusting ponytail with a ahegao pfp is just making funny observations! dont be such a prude!

Yea, buddy, you're not impressing anyone with lmgtfy and empty posing.

It really seems like you're the one who doesn't understand what's going on instead of everyone else.
