Other I find the amount of different enhancement hacks really awesome!!!

• Upvotes

i really do think its awesome that there’s essentially a version of emerald and crystal for everybody. im used to there being like, a definitive hack for every game, and its nice to see that a game as diverse as pokemon doesnt fall into that :) sorry if this is poorly written i just like to gush sometimes

like, for emerald, we have modern emerald, which.. well, modernizes emerald with a whole bunch of stuff! it was a great time with the built in randomizer BUT i was looking for something more vanilla and turns out revelation emerald was what i was looking for! and then i fell down the rabbit hole of emerald hacks and its so many!! like in a good way there’s so many of them!! emerald legacy, emerald flow, emerald cross, even ruby and sapphire get a lil bit of love :)

and crystal hacks get really crazy sometimes! i never got to finish it, but polished crystal blew me away when i gave it a test run! what a fantastic retake of pokemon crystal! i like that they added the green boy from the Chronicles anime as a playable character, and all the different remakes of the game for the GBA are soooo cool.

now i will say that im not huge on hacks that add every single pokemon. its not that theyre bad!! but i personally like to use and see pokemon from the same gen when im playing a pokemon game (unless i just dont like the regions pokemon lmaooo) so im a little put off by, say, if Erika had a leafeon, or a leavanny. STILL its awesome that if people want to play classic Pokemon games with their favorites from newer gens they can play a hack that adds them in!

it gives me a great way to replay my favorite pokemon games without wiping my old save file, while also getting to see the difference in design philosophy between the original games and the people reworking the games for play in the modern era!!! thank you all for making these cool games!!!!

Review My thoughts on Pokemon Unbound (A Review/Retrospective)

Post image
49 Upvotes

I just finished Pokemon Unbound after playing it on and off for about 5 or 6 months. All in all I had a great time. I used to be big into rom hacks in high-school but I fell out of them pretty hard in college, but now I am trying to play more.

I find myself constantly comparing rom hacks to Pokemon Insurgence. While its not a rom hack, it is a fan game that I find myself constantly re playing because I enjoy it so much. In terms of story, I did really enjoy Unbound. It was about on par with insurgence with me. The only thing I didn't like was the switch from Zeph as the main villain to Aklove. I don't hate Aklove, it just kind of felt like he came out of nowhere and I liked Zephs story more.

In terms of mons I really enjoyed the variety of Unbound. I like that I had basically every pokemon to choose from, I just had to try hard to find some (namely ferroseed). I do kind of wish this hack had some new regional variants. I really like delta pokemon from insurgence and regional variants scratch that same itch for me. It just kind of felt like Unbound didn't have anything unique in terms of pokemon. I did really enjoy the dex nav though. I liked that I could shiny hunt during the story with just a little bit of work, and it paid off, letting me get a shiny of one of my favorite pokemon.

The difficulty was annoying at times. I played it on the middle difficulty ( I can't remember if it was called normal or hard, it was whichever one was the easiest with level scaling), and I felt like it made the game unfun in some of the early gyms. Those gym gimmicks made me crank the difficulty down and just beat them by overlevelling, which was frustrating. Maybe that was due to not having a good team comp early or not ev training yet, but personally I don't feel like the early gyms should demand that, even on higher difficulty. A lot of the gyms felt like the fight against east immediately into Jaern in insurgence with how unfair they felt. In the late game things mellowed out, which is what makes me think it was due to not ev training or having a cohesive team, because I did both of those in the late game. I felt like by the time I got to crystal peak and the end of the game I had the tools to handle basically anything.

In conclusion, I'd give the game a 10/10 for mechanics and graphics, 7/10 for story, a 9/10 for pokemon, and a 5/10 for balance between battle difficulty and fun. Overall, I'd give the game an 8/10 and I would absolutely recommend it to people. I feel like it is a must play rom hack and largely embodies what a rom hack can be at its full potential. Most of my critiques are largely my personal preference and not objective, so certainly others experiences may differ.

Goodbye for now, Pokemon Unbound, I can only imagine I'll play you again, possibly as a nuzlocke. I'm really gonna miss this team. I feel like it's one of the truest to myself teams I've ever made and I wish modern pokemon games would let me have all these pokemon at once in a playthrough. I hope someone finds this helpful and maybe tips them over the fence to try the game if maybe they weren't going to before. I'm moving on to pokemon gaia next, so if anyone has any advice about that, let me know. Peace.

Development Pokémon Shifted Spectrum - Coming Soon!

Post image
231 Upvotes

Pokémon Shifted Spectrum is an alternate-reality version of Pokémon Platinum! It’s the same Sinnoh Region we all know and love, with completely redesigned Pokémon, altered encounters, more strategic battles, and a completely new way to experience the game from start to finish!

Features:

Every Pokémon has a completely new “Shifted” typing!

Custom abilities, learn sets, and recolored palettes to match new identities – including brand new shiny forms.

Increased shiny odds to 1/1024!

Expanded wild encounters featuring Pokémon from the first 4 generations.

Wild Pokémon can hold useful items, chosen to help with evolution requirements or to improve caught Pokémon in battle.

All special battles, gym leaders, and the E4 use full teams of 6 along with useful held items, coverage and setup strategies.

All gyms and E4 retain original typing’s aside from the 1st gym which is now a “Fossil Pokémon Gym”. Only Cynthia retains her iconic team.

Team Galactic has redesigned teams that grow stronger as you progress. Galactic grunts have more variety.

NPC trades have been changed, and all received Pokémon have perfect IVs.

Turtwig, Chimchar, and Piplup remain the starts, but have been reworked.

Selected moves have been rebalanced or redesigned including changes to power, accuracy, typing, and possible secondary effects.

Difficulty is increased, but NOT a difficulty rom hack.

A gym leader/ E4 guide is nearly complete, and a Shifted Spectrum pokedex along with other additional documentation to help you on your journey are also being worked on.

The goal was not to change a great game altogether, but to alter the Pokémon and challenge us to rethink the game while replaying a classic we all know and love! Shifted Spectrum is meant to feel like rediscovering Platinum again for the first time, with plenty of surprises and changes to keep you on your toes.

Thank you for reading and please join the Discord channel to stay up to date on the progress of the testing. Follow me on twitch @ Director_Smitty to see us live testing and enjoying the first playthrough of Pokémon Shifted Spectrum!

Discussion Hot take: majority of the difficulty and enhancement hacks are pointless UNLESS it introduces something actually unique

I wanna make this VERY clear. It's not that I don't think enhancement or difficulty hacks shouldn't exist at all, I just think majority of the ones already made or still being made were almost pointless cuz they don't change much or add anything new that another hack already did outside of the more vanilla feeling or increase in difficulty

Enhancement hacks are great. Honestly they're probably the best ways to play the game normally and a decent way of bringing people who are new to pokemon into the series. The pokemon Legacy series with Yellow, Crystal, Emerald and upcoming X Legacy are great examples because these hacks fix any bugs, make things more balanced and less pointless but still keeps you feeling the majority of feel of the generation you're playing like how non of the legacy hacks they made don't have physical special split which will change once X Legacy since it's a gen 6 hack. A few other Enhancement hacks can be made that do make things less vanilla and more like the ultimate version of that game such as ROWE, Quetzal and maybe even elite redux (more extreme examples but they're still emerald at the end of the day just with more stuff)

Difficulty hacks work in much the same way or at least to me. You can make a vanilla FRLG hack, you can make one that included megas, you can make one with Gen 1-9 pokemon etc but at a certain point what else can you add and why continue making FRLG difficulty hacks or other hacks of other games/regions without something to make it unique like a new region or story or battle gimmick

Ultimately once you've played 1 Enhancement or difficulty hack of a game/region, do you really need to play another? Difficulty hacks have more of a reason to play another because you can leay increase the difficulty but there will be a limit reached at some point and again you'll be stuck at nothing else needing to be played. At least with something like water blue or aesthetic red you get a visual overhaul of the game to make it look much better when you want to replay Kanto all over again

Discussion What is the most beautiful Pokémon romhack?

What is the truly the most beautiful Pokémon romhack? A romhack where the regions look aesthetically beautiful and pleasing, where you can just walk around and enjoy the world. Also preferably that there is some sort of life around the world, like Pokémons walking around, many NPCS etc.

Discussion Games should have a “Search” function in the PC to make it easier to find Pokemon.

It gets very tedious when I catch a pokemon and try to evolve it later for either using it or dex completion but spend way too long trying to find it.

Playing through Emerald Imperium right now. There’s 11 boxes of Pokemon and I’m only through gym 4. Almost every ROM hack is like this now. I’m fine with a large Pokédex but I wish ROM hacks made it easier to find them in the PC.

Example of this is when I was playing Soul Gold. I had around 18 boxes of Pokemon and was running out of room. I tried to start the dex completion process but finding each pokemon to evolve them felt like a different task all on its own. Especially if the game requires you to have multiple teams due to the difficulty.

Sorry for the rambling I needed to inflate the word count because of the 150 word minimum. But Is it even possible to implement a search function? Because I think it would be an incredible quality of life feature.

Discussion We are very close to Monomyth's release and I am EXCITED!!

Post image

The dev mentioned on discord that the final complete release will be before October ends and a release date announcement will be made 1-2 days before release

Started the year with Ghost Grey being my most anticipated hack but that changed with MM's trailer which was so sudden but absolutely banging. Can't wait to finally be able to play it

Random thought, but this, gta6, zelda oot, avengers doomsday and dune all within 2 months is kinda crazy... we're eating good

Development Paint Terrain Tool in Gen 4 ROM Editor

Hey everyone. I made a post about two weeks ago showcasing a mod in my gen 4 rom editor where you can add lava surfing. Well, I've been working tirelessly since then to continue to improve this rom/map editor for gen 4 games, and I wanted to showcase one of my favorite tools: the terrain painter.

Instead of placing every edge, corner, and middle tile by hand for things like water, cliffs, and paths, you can just paint the shape and the edges fill in automatically. It works directly on the maps in the ROM with no other tool needed. I also added lava painting to go along with my lava surf mod.

Also showcased in this video is walk mode, where you can walk around the map you just made in 3D to get a feel for it before booting up the actual game.

This tool is still a work in progress, and I'm still working on some very exciting features like procedural route generation for adding new routes, so let me know what you guys think!

Following Pokemon EX

AI assistance was used. AI did not "generate" code or content it was used with human review find call sites and read assembly for me to work with and help debug my code. I've worked on this myself for 2+ years and built systems like followers ect by hand. AI has been used for example to help to get my follower code working on the bw2 bridges which aren't tile based maps, for certain abilities which I couldn't find hooks too, complex move effects ect. It was never used for art, music, scripts, story, pokemon edits, sprites etc.

Development Pokémon Unbound German Translation. We Just Completed the Entire Main Story!

Post image
36 Upvotes

We’ve reached a major milestone with Pokémon Unbound DE, our German fan translation of Pokémon Unbound!

I personally completed the entire main story of our German build, all the way to becoming Champion.
And the best part?

The main story is fully playable in German on our tested build.

Every NPC I encountered along the main story had understandable German dialogue. Story progression worked, and I didn’t encounter any major dialogue box overflow issues.

Of course, we’re not calling it finished yet.

There are still a few untranslated UI elements, graphical labels like PSN instead of the German GIF, and occasional text overflows in certain menus. Optional quests and postgame content also need more testing.

Our current public beta is based on Pokémon Unbound 1.0.1, while we’re separately working on porting the translation to Unbound 2.1.1.1.

The bigger goal is to build a reusable localization pipeline that can support different game versions, rather than treating every update as an entirely new translation project.

Our Discord community has also grown to over 161 members, with players actively reporting bugs and helping us improve the translation.

For anyone working on ROM-hack localization: What has been your biggest challenge when translating graphics, UI elements, or dialogue across different game versions?

And if you’re playing Unbound, which optional areas or postgame content would you prioritize for testing?

Project & BPS patches:

https://github.com/pokemon-unbound-de/pokemon-unbound-de/releases/

Discord community:

This is an unofficial German fan translation. We distribute BPS patches only, no ROM files.

Development PUSE v1.4.0 - Unbound improvements, experimental Radical Red 4.1 support, and a Nintendo 3DS beta

Hey everyone! I've been working on another update to PUSE.

I remind you that you can use it in your browser without running a server, or through the local backend and Switch/3DS homebrew ports.

A good part of this update went into checking how the game actually stores its saves, especially the fragmented PC data. That led to fixes for PC parsing, checksum handling and choosing the correct save generation. Switch and 3DS now cover all 24 ordinary boxes.

There are also some new editing tools, that maybe are even more interesting to non-technical users 😅:

  • Happiness/friendship and Original Trainer name editing.
  • PC Pokémon release.
  • An All Pokémon view, roster export and save-health/change review in the web editor.
  • Pokédex Seen/Caught controls and calculated stat previews.
  • RTC recovery that re-enables Unbound's own Frozen Heights Time Fixer. Thanks to caesarium25 for discovering and documenting this method!

Let's get to the good stuff! PUSE now supports the verified English Radical Red 4.1 version across all four runtimes.

Putting myself in big troubles a while ago

You can edit existing Party/PC Pokémon, browse all 25 boxes, release stored Pokémon, edit the five bag pockets and money, and read trainer identity.

There are limits: creating new Pokémon, Pokédex/progress flags, RTC and several other game-specific operations aren't available for RR. Difficulty/randomizer rules and effective ability overrides aren't fully modeled either.

There’s now a 3DS port available (well, there was an older one, but it was pretty buggy 😛), though it still needs thorough testing on real hardware. I have a 3DS myself, but I’ve just been busy lately. If anyone wants to help test it out, I’d really appreciate it!

Okay, but I said all CFRU/DPE ROM-hacks. What now?

The next research goal is to make ROM discovery less dependent on fixed offsets and English text anchors. That means finding candidate save-section and PC box-pointer tables, following their code references, and checking them against how each game loads and saves data.

For that, varied saves would help: early-game, postgame, empty/full boxes, different difficulties, randomizers and languages. Saves from any CFRU hacks are welcome!

Submit save samples privately through Dropbox

Please upload one ZIP containing your in-game .sav or .srm file and an info.txt (if you want, it's super helpful, but I know is an hassle) with:

  • Exact hack name and version.
  • Language.
  • Patch/source-page link.
  • Difficulty and randomizer settings.
  • Device or emulator, including version if known.
  • Story progress.
  • Any previous save-editor modifications.

Please don't upload ROMs or emulator save states.

Of course, supporting more ROM hacks creates one HUGE problem: the name. It's called PUSE! And I'm not changing it. What can I say... I like PUSE 😛

Maybe the U could stand for “Universal” instead of “Unbound”? Anyone got a better idea?

Thanks in advance to everyone!

Discussion How to implement different sexual orientations for Pokémon?

I think I could make it so each Pokémon is either homosexual or heterosexual at random. This would only affect which Pokémon they can attract, not which Pokémon the are attracted by. If I were to make it such that a Pokémon needs to be of a certain orientation to be attracted by a Pokémon with the same orientation, those are too many variables and would make it essentially random, throwing all the strategy out the window.

The canon explanation is that the atract attack creates an illusion that makes the opponent see your Pokémon as their preffered gender.

I could instead make it such that the opponents orientation is what determines the effectiveness of the attack, in which case I would implement a little icon showing the Pokémon's orientation to make it less of a gamble.

Bisexual Pokémon would also exist, and to make them worthy of use, I'd make it so attract has a 50% chance of hitting as opposed to 100%. Or maybe it'd be better to make them "infatuated" half as often? I don't know

Also I'd like to make it so that pokemon can be asexual, as well as normally gendered pokemon having a small chance of being genderless, but I don't know how I'd implement this without breaking the meta. Any ideas?

edit: I'll show you, I'll show you all.

Other Announcement for Brisk Emerald and my next ROMHack.

Hey, it's me. The dev of Brisk Emerald. I'm here to announce my next romhack, AND info regarding the future of Brisk Emerald.

Let's start with the smaller news, regarding my next hack:

POKEMON SEARING SUN:

Searing sun is a USUM romhack that is my next largest project. it'll have megas, zmoves, g-max, all 1025 pokemon, etc. But I can't start work on it until USUM expansion is complete.

So in the mean time let's talk about the future of:

BRISK EMERALD

Brisk Emerald is my second romhack with a ton of features, it's already out and the final release was about a week ago.

HOWEVER

I'm not done with Brisk Emerald, in fact the largest brisk emerald update since release is on it's way.

This update adds;

1. Main Features

  • Four difficulty modes: Easy, Normal, Hard, and Extreme.
  • Level-cap customization: Options for adjusting or removing level caps.
  • Infinite trainer rematches: Repeat battles without the previous limitations.
  • Randomizer options: Added randomization settings, excluding warp randomization.
  • Shiny odds customization: Adjustable odds ranging from 1/50 to 1/8192.
  • Shiny Hunt mode: Faster overworld Pokémon despawning to make hunting more convenient.
  • An initial batch of 56 custom Mega forms.
  • Individual Mega Stone items, made available through Lilycove. (this will change)
  • Additional fan-made Mega designs and sprite collections.

The new megas are designed by u/CDRX73 SpectralMallow, ThunderRainbow, SpiritsUndead, and iriv24.

Fixed

  • Starters allways being exactly the same
  • Reduced water encounter rates: Water encounters adjusted to approximately 5–10%.
  • Reduced cave encounter rates: Cave encounter frequency lowered.
  • Repel improvements: Repels function independently of the leading Pokémon's level.
  • Early-game legendary encounter adjustments: Certain Pokémon, including Xerneas, Shaymin, Wo-Chien, and Celebi, were moved to later locations to avoid early-game problems.

QoL

  • Auto-Run
  • Faster menus
  • Holding directional buttons moves through menus more quickly.
  • Faster saving
  • Faster intro
  • Multi-use EXP Candies: Fixed candy use so multiple candies behave correctly.
  • Ball Capsules
  • Intro Messages
  • Change Ball pokemon is in
  • Move-learning prompts toggleable
  • Switch between Level-Up, Egg, TM, and Tutor move categories. (there were issues with it)
  • Early trainer levels were temporarily reduced, including Roxanne's level adjustment.
  • Shop inventories were expanded to include EXP Candies.

A new in-game Help menu was implemented with around 23 help topics, explaining features such as difficulty modes, randomizers, shiny settings, shiny hunting, speed controls, Ball Capsules, candies, custom Megas, level caps, and new areas.

this update isn't done, but the beta can be found on the Discord

This is half in case anyone wants to use these, half as practice for my own hack, where I'll (hopefully) be redesigning Kanto. I've been working a little with Polished Crystal as a base as well as regular Crystal. Can you tell what each of the maps are? I've left some of the more relatively obscure ones towards the end.

By the way, if you want to use any of them in your own hack, let me know and I'll send you a folder with all the .blk files (so long as you give credit, of course), and if you've got a map you think would look cool in my style, let me know and I might try to make it.

Release Releasing my English translation for Pokémon Let’s Go Pikachu / Eevee 8.1 (Spanish FireRed hack)

Thumbnail
gallery
476 Upvotes

Hello everyone, I’ve been working on an English translation of the Spanish ROM hack Pokémon Let’s Go Pikachu GBA 8.1 (plus the Eevee edition), and the translation is now completed. Originally it was more of a hobby project, but I decided to share it here in case anyone wants to play it. Apparently many people here were interested in playing this 2 years ago! 😅

In case you didn't know, Pokémon Let’s Go Pikachu and Eevee GBA is a Spanish FireRed romhack, based on the Switch games with the same name. It was created by Kevin PokeFan. The latest version they offer is 8.1.

English version made by author apparently existed at some point but only up to 6.0, and unfortunately it was extremely buggy and would become unplayable after certain point, so that's why I decided to translate it from the start.

Disclaimers

  • Sadly I was not able to get in touch with Kevin PokeFan for translation permission. I have tried DM them via Discord but got no response. Their Discord server for the hack, is also completely deserted, fills with bots and spams, and nobody is discussing about the game.
  • I decided to share this since apparently people were interested in playing this game (after I saw this post), but were unable to due to language barriers. That being said, if original author sees this and wants me to remove it, I will gladly do so.
  • The project is finished as pretty much all text translation were done. There could be few instances but they shouldn't affect general playthrough, as I personally did play through the whole romhack myself. No other changes or fixes are planned due the reasons (see below).
  • All credit goes to Kevin PokeFan as they are the author of this romhack, I only did English translation.

What you get

  • 99% English text translation: dialogue, signs, menus, battle text, Pokédex entries, and names/descriptions for Pokémon, moves, items and abilities.
  • Official English modern terms where possible (Poké Ball, Professor Oak, etc.), in the tone of the Let’s Go games (mostly for entries that are new in this romhack) and decapitalization.
  • Where a modern name doesn’t fit the game’s length limit, the older official spelling (e.g. ThunderPunch) was used.

Two variants per edition (Pikachu / Eevee)

  1. Translation only: text changes only, plays exactly like the original hack.
  2. Translation + fixes (recommend): adds a few tiny (1-3 byte) fixes for some issues from original hack, each tested in mGBA before/after:
    • Bug Buzz can now lower Sp. Def (originally never did).
    • Moonblast and Steamroller trigger their side effect ~30% of the time (was ~1%).
    • Brine’s double power works correctly for Pokémon with 256+ HP.
    • Battle box now shows “Lv” correctly for regular Eevee.
    • Some minor text inconsistencies that might confused players.
  3. Patches apply to a clean US FireRed 1.0 ROM.

What’s NOT translated / fixed

  • Anything drawn as artwork stays in Spanish: the Trainer Card lettering, the Pokémon summary screen labels (NOMB., TIPO, PS, ATAQUE...), and the type icons etc. Since there is no hack's source files, it's making difficult to me to fix everything. I decided to keep those things intact. But those shouldn't affect general gameplay too much.
  • This is primary a translation patch, so the hack’s own quirks are left as is. Rebuilding things like the Pokédex without the hack’s source risks breaking the game, so I didn’t go there.
  • Move/item descriptions describe what the game actually does, not what the original Spanish text claimed. Many of them were wrong (mostly, move/item doesn't behave like text suggested to be). A few are intentionally vague because I was unable to measure the exact behavior (Mind Blown, Floaty Fall, Gale Wings). I fixed most I can, but again, without source it's difficult to measure and fix them all (the only thing I can tell is that it's based on unknown CFRU version I wasn't able to find).
  • There are lots of bugs and issues etc, which are all from the hack itself, some are listed below.

Some known issues of the original hack you might want to know (according to my testing/playthough, those are unchanged since fixing them are not easy without source)

  • Lots of placeholder Pokédex entries (~600 numbers), and 79 species have no valid dex number, so they can’t be registered (including some wild-catchable ones like Falinks, Skwovet and Galarian forms). As far I can tell, the hack does have all Gen 1-9 Pokémon, however some of them might be buggy, or their data are wrong.
  • Some species share a dex number, so catching one marks the other as caught.
  • Every party Pokémon gets EXP from every battle, and it can’t be turned off.
  • Pikachu edition: Eevee evolves by stone only (Vaporeon, Jolteon, Flareon, Espeon, Umbreon); Glaceon, Leafeon and Sylveon are only obtainable from wild. In the Eevee edition, Partner Eevee doesn’t evolve at all and you cannot get another Eevee by any means.
  • Some lines contradict the actual game (e.g. whether TMs are single-use), and some forms have non-official stats/types.
  • Minor visual oddities (sign text on the Pokémon Center door, the “y” in “Money”, etc.)

Keep in mind there could be more, and they were not caused by translation since they are presented in original Spanish hack as well.

As stated, without source files it's very hard to fix those (at least with my skills and knowledge), and they are not really in my scope of this project, which is mainly about translation. If anyone else knows how to fix them then they are welcome to do so. 🙂

Despite those issues, the hack itself is very enjoyable and worth to try. Hopefully everyone can finally play the hack now with no language barrier. Enjoy!
