Hi! I'm here to find out how you guys are managing to solo the Elite Four, if anyone has actually managed to do so. Currently, I'm using a 2-Pokémon strategy, so it doesn't really count as a true solo run, but it's the lowest number of Pokémon I've managed to use so far, and it works almost perfectly.
My main criteria are that the strategy must not rely on luck, meaning no reliance on Critical Hits, chances of inflicting a specific status condition, or even whether a move will actually hit its target or not. I also can't rely on having any other Pokémon in my party, for example, to revive my "solo" Pokémon, since the goal is to use as few Pokémon as possible. The idea is to have the most predictable team possible while also keeping battles as fast as possible to speed up multiple runs against the Elite Four.
The two Pokémon I'm using are:
- Rayquaza
- Nature: Adamant
- Ability: Air Lock
- EVs: Atk and Spd
- Max IVs: Atk, Spd, and HP
- Held Item: Amulet Coin
- Moves:
- Aerial Ace
- Outrage
- Dragon Ascent
- Dragon Claw
- Mewtwo
- Nature: Modest
- Ability: Unnerve
- EVs: Sp. Atk and Spd
- Max IVs: Sp. Atk, Spd, and HP
- Held Item: Twisted Spoon
- Moves:
- Energy Ball
- Ice Beam
- Shadow Ball
- Psystrike
My strategy is as follows:
Aaron
- Yanmega: Rayquaza > Aerial Ace
- Flygon: Rayquaza > Dragon Claw
- Vespiquen: Rayquaza > Aerial Ace
- Heracross: Rayquaza > Aerial Ace
- Scizor: Rayquaza > Dragon Ascent
- Drapion: Rayquaza > Outrage
Bertha
- Whiscash: Rayquaza > Outrage
- Nidoking: Mewtwo > Ice Beam
- Gliscor: Mewtwo > Ice Beam
- Hippowdon: Mewtwo > Ice Beam
- Mamoswine: Mewtwo > Energy Ball
- Rhyperior: Mewtwo > Energy Ball
Flint
- Ninetales: Rayquaza > Dragon Claw
- Arcanine: Mewtwo > Psystrike
- Houndoom: Rayquaza > Aerial Ace
- Rapidash: Mewtwo > Psystrike
- Infernape: Rayquaza > Aerial Ace
- Note: Infernape holds a Focus Sash, which means it can't be defeated in a single hit. It usually responds by using Thunder Punch on Rayquaza, which may leave it paralyzed. I then use Aerial Ace again on the second turn. I haven't been able to work around this issue with a different move and/or Pokémon.
- Magmortar: Mewtwo > Psystrike
Lucian
Note: Against Lucian, I change Mewtwo's held item to Spell Tag or Spooky Plate, since this is the only way to OHKO Bronzong with my current team.
- Mr. Mime: Rayquaza > Dragon Ascent
- Espeon: Mewtwo > Shadow Ball
- Alakazam: Mewtwo > Shadow Ball
- Bronzong: Mewtwo > Shadow Ball
- Slowbro: Mewtwo > Shadow Ball
- Gallade: Mewtwo > Shadow Ball
Cynthia
Note: Against Cynthia, I switch Mewtwo's held item back to Twisted Spoon.
- Spiritomb: Rayquaza > Outrage
- Porygon-Z: Mewtwo > Psystrike
- Lucario: Mewtwo > Psystrike
- Note: The same thing happens here as with Flint's Infernape: Lucario holds a Focus Sash, so Mewtwo gets attacked after the first hit, usually with Meteor Mash. I then use Psystrike again on the second turn to defeat Lucario.
- Milotic: Mewtwo > Energy Ball
- Note: This is the biggest problem with the strategy, as Milotic is the only Pokémon that can actually throw the entire run off. Neither Mewtwo nor Rayquaza can defeat it with a single move, allowing it to use Mirror Coat against Mewtwo's Energy Ball and knock Mewtwo out. In these cases, I usually restart the game and try again. Fortunately, Milotic uses Scald most of the time, which may inflict the Burn status condition on Mewtwo, but that doesn't interfere with the strategy.
- Garchomp: Mewtwo > Ice Beam
- Note: Mewtwo's Unnerve ability prevents Garchomp from using its Yache Berry, which would otherwise reduce Ice Beam's super-effective damage. This guarantees a one-hit KO.
So, that's my strategy, and it's the best I've come up with while sticking to the criteria I mentioned above.
I'd love to hear about your strategies for trying to solo the Elite Four!
