🐧Linux I reverse-engineered the Pimax Windows service for Unix-based systems, specifically focusing on Omarchy's

So, I have full control over all inputs coming from the headset, and I already have a full application working on Unix/Linux systems (specifically for the Dream Air SLAM for now).

What I currently have access to and working: • All IPD, brightness, and lens adjustments • Full controller input • Camera access • Eye tracking control • Native SteamVR integration • A custom pass-through desktop app that stays fixed in space and supports AI commands

Technical details: I had to patch the latest NVIDIA drivers and work with Monado.

There is still a lot to do, especially regarding support for other devices, but it has a ton of potential. If there's enough interest, I'll open-source it and share the GitHub repo.

What do you guys think? Would anyone want access to this?

UPDATE:

I’m almost finishing the final steps and integrations so everyone can contribute—automating testing and setting up a way for everyone to use Claude, Codex, or whatever text LLM on their machine to submit a PR for compatibility with all headsets.

There’s still a lot to do, but I find this really exciting: we have access to all eye-tracking data, can implement our own foveated rendering, and have full control over tracking. I also implemented a local AI (WhisperVR workspace) so you can work right in there—along with many other features.

This Saturday, I’ll have it ready for everyone! Thanks for your patience.

UPDATE2:

https://github.com/laughtt/omarchyvr

So here it is—the public repo! There is still a lot to cook and a lot to work on, but I wanted to address a couple of questions and answers for everyone.

I originally wanted to finish this project completely and share it once it was 100% ready, but I realized there is just so much to do, and getting more developers involved will make progress much faster. I could really use help with:

  • Supporting additional VR headsets
  • Improving controller/remote tracking support
  • Room synchronization and spatial setup
  • Further refining the experimental SteamVR implementation

Currently, I use Monado and Ryze. My approach was to think through each feature, get it to a good-enough state, and then move on to the next.

Project Background

For context, I started this project just 5 days ago. I have extensive experience as a software engineer with a background in C and low-level languages, so I had a good idea of how to approach it. I didn't use any reverse-engineering tools or Pimax binary executables—I felt that was the wrong approach. Instead, I analyzed the cable signal specifications, ran tests, deciphered data with Claude, and iterated continuously.

From there, I routed all commands to Omarchy, patched the display issues, handled the driver pathways for NVIDIA, and forked Monado and Ryze to resolve some specific disconnects and quirks unique to this headset. On my machine, it's pretty stable once fully configured.

Raw Telemetry & Inputs Collected

Here is a breakdown of the raw data streams we are currently reading from the hardware:

Input Where it comes from Rate Primary Use Case
IMU (gyro + accelerometer) Headset USB (own stream) 500 Hz Head tracking, "headset lying still" detection, auto mode
4 Tracking Cameras (infrared) Separate USB camera device 60 fps 6DoF head tracking, controller tracking, camera hands, passthrough
Controller Reports (sticks, trigger, grip, buttons, touch, battery) Headset USB (via headset radio) Active connection stream In-game / Work input, "picked up" detection
Controller Heartbeat (awake, battery, firmware) Headset command channel Every 2s per controller Pairing status & app battery level
Eye Tracker Own USB device ~119 Hz Gaze point in Work mode
Microphone USB audio 48 kHz stereo Voice commands & recording
Headset Info Report Reply on command channel On demand Lens IPD readback, headset state

Note on Unused Telemetry:

  • A controller touch bit (believed to be a proximity sensor, unverified).
  • A "visor status" query that may indicate whether the headset is currently being worn.
  • Both are visible in Windows packet captures but are not yet implemented in our codebase.Ā

Why Omarchy?

The primary reason I built this on Omarchy was to create an optimal AI-driven work environment with Claude or any local model —where you can speak, windows pop up, and you can interact with up to 6 floating screens using voice commands. It's a really compelling setup and I enjoy using it a lot. Omarchy is really good on this as is deeply integrated with LLM.

Current State & Performance

I’ve also managed to play Dungeons and Half-Life 2 in it. The tracking isn't perfect yet since we need deeper integration—right now, we are relying on raw data directly from the headset. The room setup and eye-tracking integration also currently run on raw telemetry.

If you find this project interesting and want to contribute, you are very welcome to jump in! Please note: this is strictly aimed at developers right now, not end-users or consumers, as the tracking isn't quite game-ready yet. That said, frame rates are higher and efficiency seems significantly better in this environment.

Future Vision & Community Goals

I'm not sure if there are other VR projects with this specific depth of integration, but tinkering with this stack has been incredibly fun. There is huge potential for improvement here, and I'm confident that with the community's help, we can make this hardware shine to its full potential.

Leveraging AI in this workflow has changed the game—a good engineer can move 100x faster. What typically would have taken months took just days, and being able to hand this project off to everyone in such a functional state is deeply rewarding.

Looking ahead, the goal is to expand this ecosystem to support a much broader range of hardware, including the Meta Quest 3 and other popular headsets. If we can build a fully optimized, open-source stack that works seamlessly across all devices, it will be a massive win for everyone.

Let me know if you have any questions, and I'll be happy to answer them! Thanks for everything!

Review Received my Dream Air SE Slam

Delivery took just over a month for UK (not terrible)

Why I purchased: Coming from an Index, my goals were lighter headset, better visuals and similar or better FOV.

Firstly the positives

  • Build quality to me feels great, I know some have said otherwise but I just don't see any problems. Perhaps I have a new batch but I can honestly say it feels good.
  • Edit: Sorry forgot to mention, I had to tighten the straps to try and solve the FOV, this caused the little connector to keep popping off. Very annoying. Imagine it would be solved with aftermarket bands or mounts.

  • Visual quality is amazing. (To add more, coming from an index the clarity was night and day. I couldn't see the tiny nodes anymore, the text was fantastic, the colours amazing)

  • Blacks are fantastic, Trucking at night for a bit was amazing.

  • Software, I used both Play and EVO and they seem great, lots of features and easy to use.

  • Light, Wow, very light. Well done Pimax

Negatives

  • The new gasket (I think I have the new one as they said I would) is okish. I ordered the studioform from advice in this sub and it was way better, way more comfortable and feels like a nicer fit. Honestly, Pimax just ship the unit with these instead.

  • Lenses Glare, there is a noticeable quarter circle light glare which I assume is the lenses at night. In fast racing I didn't really notice, but with more slow paces travel it's unavoidable and since the play space is so small it's really distracting at night especially when I turn my head.

  • Discomfort, to try and combat the FOV I have the straps very tight to push the lenses closer, this did improve FOV slightly but is extremely uncomfortable. Headstap does nothing for this as it's the otter edge of the lenses pushing against my nose and cheek etc.

  • Blur, there was blur when moving my head. Noticable, even with high FPS.

  • Distored text, sometimes the text was clear, then it doubled up, it was strange. Moments of bliss and clarify interrupted by odd things.

  • Sound. The built-in audio seems pointless to me. Volume too low, no clarity, especially if it's sim racing. You'll need to factor in a separate audio system.

  • Edit: Additional negative I forgot to mention. Putting the headset on and off is so frustrating. The prongs that stick out make it a nightmare, and as mentioned already it kept pulling the connector out. So I was having to unstrap it everytime to take it off. I imagine aftermarket headband or mount would solve this.

Dealbreakers (for me)

  • FOV, it's too small. WAY too small. I tried the headset stock to see how much improvement I can make. It was horrid, felt like I had two black rings around my eyes (bino-vision I guess). I knew it wasn't the best going in which is why I was prepared, studioform gasket helped a bit, made it feel a little less claustrophobic. I then tried the EVO app with no improvement. I then tried the sboys3 driver and no noticeable difference. I put it down for a bit, did some more research, altered settings, adjusted things and still nothing.

Summary: I don't know honestly, I don't know who this is for. For me the visual space is so small due to FOV that I wasn't enjoying myself. I tried extremely hard, tried to focus on the middle of the screen for as long as possible in the hopes my peripheral vision would ignore it or something, but I kept getting disappointed and furstrated at every turn in the road.

I assume the full dream air is better, it's out of my price range unfortunately. It's with massive disappointment I will be returning the headset.

Thanks for reading. I hope to be back one day.

Discussion Quick playtest of OFXR Bridge 2.14.1 (Dream Air)

Ran a quick playtest of the latest version of OFXR Bridge with a Pimax DA (Win 11 / 32GB / 5090). The release notes highlight support for Pimax OpenXR and support for Star Citizen VR, among other enhancements.

I tried MSFS 2024 first in my favorite test bed city, the Las Vegas Strip, using Pimax Open XR (no smart smoothing). The OFXR bridge app was working as I could see the green FPS counter in the top right (I noticed that the counter now includes a latency counter as well as an indicator showing the frame gen, 3x in my test). The good news is that the game FPS improved significantly as shown by the counter (over 60 FPS in an area where 40 is tough to maintain at DLSS Quality). Unfortunately, I still saw lots of stuttering, especially on turns, even though the latency counter didn't seem very high in my test. I disarmed the bridge and ran a test with just native Pimax OpenXR (no smart smoothing), and even though the FPS went down to normal levels (40+) there was little to no stuttering, and turns were smooth...native Pimax OpenXR for the win in this test.

I followed with a test of Star Citizen. I made sure that the bridge was armed and launched the game with Pimax OpenXR, but I didn't see the green FPS counter, which means that the bridge isn't running according to the setup guide. In addition, game FPS was unchanged. I'm not sure why it wasn't working for SC (maybe I missed a step somewhere).

Conclusion: I think OFXR has some real potential, hopefully there will be some additional releases to address the above issues. If anyone is seeing different results, please share!

Discussion Way to change "World Scale" in Pimax not in the game

Hi I have a Dream Air and I noticed the VR world in iRacing is a little small, the interior of the car is small, the steering wheel is smaller than should be,.... reading a little bit apparently our IPDs are used by our brains to appreciate the size of things, and the VR games are designed with a standard/average IPD of around 63 or 63.5, this is the distance of the "VR cameras" used to generate the image for every eye.

My IPD is 65.5, so that would explain why I see the things a little small in VR.

In other games like MSFS2024 there is the parameter "World Scale" precisely to adjust this, but apparently in iRacing there is no way to do it in the game

I read you can do it with OpenXR Toolkit, but I think this mod is not supported anymore and I read it could creates issues and many people do not recomend to install it.

Is there other way to do it in Pimax software some way?

Review Any Dirt Rally 2.0 and motion users?

I'm trying to decide between a BSB 2e and the Dream Air Lighthouse for Sim Racing, specifically I have the Qubic QS-220 motion system and wondering if anyone has motion usage with this or a similar system. Qubic does have built in VR stabilization features I haven't been able to test.

I'm running a 9800x3d and 5080. Previous Index user but the resolution really killed it compared to a 49" curved and it's done-zo.

Mixed on choice l. Dream air for slightly better cable, much higher visuals and sharing capability. BSB for price and much higher rated customer service but not many people seem to have experience with this.

Thanks I'm advance.

Game/Software Replaying RE7 with Dream Air + High Res Texture Packs

WOW! That’s all I can say guys.. Ashok’s high res 4k texture pack brings RE7 to the next level in the Dream Air. ā€œFull,ā€ not the ā€œliteā€ version. Looks as good as Half Life Alyx (once you get past the beginning outdoor section). And runs very well once you get it dialed in (I’m running with a 5090).

A few things I’ve discovered:

-The Fluffy Mod Manager method did not work for me for the high res textures! Only dragging and dropping directly from the extracted RAR files.
-Turn off subsurface scattering
-Set textures to high

Enjoy.

LH Solutions ZoneTweak: a pimax playspace editor for lighthouse

Ever wish Pimax's boundary wasn't unusable? I sure did:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Pimax/comments/1jajept/pimax_guardian_is_awful_let_me_use_steam_vrs/

https://www.reddit.com/r/Pimax/comments/1wcyvh4/pimax_guardian_room_boundry_has_been_broken_for/

Then I punched my desk corner mid-game because the boundary didn’t cover it. Right Index controller stick broke. Enough is enough.

So I've created ZoneTweak. (like ChaperoneTweak) for the Pimax Lighthouse safety zone. You put the headset on and the boundary shows up as laser generating posts on the floor. You grab them and drag them exactly where you want, add points or delete them, then hit save. It writes straight into Pimax’s own files, reboot pimax and it's got the correct shape for your boundary. No corner cutting.

Other stuff it does:

  • Save named play spaces and swap between them. I’ve got a door that changes my space depending on if it’s open or closed, so that one was a must. You can even switch from a desktop shortcut without putting the headset on.
  • Lets you change the warning distance for when the boundary shows up, which Evo doesn’t let you touch. There’s a test mode so you can see exactly where it’ll trigger.
  • Move, rotate or resize the play area.
  • Backs up your original files before it writes anything, and there’s a restore button if you want the stock one back.

Also I went a little overboard on how it looks. Your room turns into a grimy cyberpunk industrial prison.

Grab it from the releases page here: https://github.com/killdano/ZoneTweak

Discussion Bit the bullet

Well after watching YouTube reviews for weeks I made the purchase. I decided to order the Dream Air SE Slam. I don’t have a new pc so I decided the SE might perform better with my system. I have a r7 5800x3d and a 7800xt (32 gb system ram). I’m coming from the psvr2 on pc, so I am extremely excited. I did order HonVr lenses to protect the pimax lenses. I’ll be installing the sboys stream vr driver as well. Shipping times will be 2-3 weeks, and I’m sure that will feel like forever.

News Heads up on Pimax Evo 2.0.0

Not sure how well known this version of Evo is. The eye tracking on my Dream Air SE wasn't working correctly on any prior version of Evo, but it now works perfectly with Evo 2.0.0, which BTW is based on Pimax Play 2.0.4. All the other good stuff that Evo has is there, though its GUI has been completely overhauled. Note that it set my brightness to 55% when installed, but no big deal to adjust it to your liking.

Discussion Dream Air glare & surface convexity

I read through some posts, but got no real conclusion. I have crazy glare with my DA. The Valve intro in HLAlyx has all of the borders lighting up in bright.

I have cleaned the lenses with soap water, but it doesn't get better. What you'd suggest to clean the lenses? Some special photo lense cleaner?

DA is a great headset, it has some issues, but I can live with those, but the glare is a no go. Any ideas what I can try?

- - -

Regarding convexity. In the game when I look at a straight wall, it looks like its bulging outwards, like it's not straight. I hear that it could be an effect when you're too close to the lenses. Of course I am. I need the FOV. Could it be some software setting?

Question Best way to launch GTA V Enh (LR Mod) with Pimax DA?

Dream Air, Win 11 / 32GB / 5090. Just picked up GTA V Enh and want to give it a try with the new LR mod. I've been using the sboys3 SteamVR driver for most games, but it CTD immediately...I assume the EA launcher and/or Battleye anticheat has a problem, has anyone gotten it to work?

Assuming that sboys won't work, what's the best way to launch using Pimax OpenXR? On Luke's patreon it says you need to add - nobattleye to the game's launch options, does this mean it has to be launched via SteamVR? If not, can I run the game exe directly from the desktop, or does it need the Rockstar launcher?

Wanted to check here first before trying all these options myself and possibly borking up other things...if there are any other tips please share, thanks!

EDIT: The game works fine in SteamVR with sboys3 driver. The solution is to make sure the following settings are in the RVR section of the realvr.ini file:

PreferredAPI2=2

RenderMode2=2

I actually had this same issue with Cyberpunk 2077 and completely forgot (senior moment)...leaving it here as a PSA.

Tech Support STeamVR issue with PiMax Play 2.0.4 and EVO 2.0.0

I have a PCS 50ppd. Up until PPlay 2.04, I had no issues(minus controller tracking, but that will be a different post) using SVR. Everything lined up and played normal. I installed 2.0.4. Pimax menus and home appeared normal. I launch SVR and everything in Steam is double vision. Nothing would converge. I played with my IPD with no success. I then realized the Pimax menus and home were fine. I verified and repaired SVR. No change. I then tried re-installing SVR. No change. With the information I had, I re-installed EVO 1.0, effectively downgrading PPlay. Launched SVR and it was perfect.

I saw today they had EVO 2.0.0 and heard mentioned it was based on the latest PPlay 2.0.4 and gave it a shot. Sure enough, launched SVR and no convergence again. Final test, I launched Sb0y in dev mode. SVR ran fine. Everything converged and looked normal.

Each install was done Clean.

Anyone else come across this?

Question Crystal Light: How do I make this thing comfortable?

Loving my PCL but I have two issues:

1)Can't find a comfortable way to put it without ending up hurting my nose (because all weight ends up there), I try balancing it out but it's hard to find that balance.

2)For some reason I get my lenses a bit "misty", I have to be constantly removing them and cleaning them up. I'm guessing that if I manage to get them well placed in my head this will stop

What are you guys using to make this thing comfortable?

I heard studioform to be recommended a lot and I see they have a pack that includes everything to make it comfy (apache strap, counterweights, facial interface that seems thicker) do you guys recommend me this pack, or just to get apache strap and counterweights? I do admit the fƔcil interface feels a bit too slim, perhaps it gets the glasses so close to my head the second issue I'm talking about happens more often
