Rule 3 is changing: r/psx is Not the Place to Advertise Your Indie Games

tl;dr the fine print of Rule 3 has been adjusted to explicitly forbid modern indie games unless playable on original hardware (homebrew)

It's my own fault that this change has to be made, I allowed a few "psx-inspired" indie game posts to remain up despite breaking the rules because of the large amount of upvotes they received.

I'd post and sticky comments like "It's off topic but y'all like it so I'll leave it up". My approach to moderation has always been to let the community make content decisions when appropriate. Unfortunately adjustments need to be made to protect the subject matter of this community.

Due to the massive influx of shovelware indie games that are "psx inspired" getting posted here, I'm sorry to say that Rule 3 will have to be more strictly enforced.

From this point forward, for indie games to be posted here they will have to be playable on PSX hardware or an emulator. Games that run on real hardware fall firmly into the category of homebrew, which is perfectly appropriate to discuss here. Games that run in PSX emulators but not real hardware are also allowed. "Retro Inspired" or "PSX Inspired" games that do not fulfill either of those 2 requirements will be removed and the poster will get a 24 hour ban.

The ban is meant to be informative to the poster, not punitive. However repeat offenders will be permanently banned.

Here is a friendly flowchart to help you decide whether or not it's appropriate to post your indie game in this community:

Thank you for reading and thank you for posting. Best of luck in all your indie dev adventures.

What's your favorite 'forgotten' PSX game?

Mine's Motor Toon Grand Prix 2 (or just Motor Toon Grand Prix for NTSC). It already felt like I was the only one playing this game in the 90's and I never heard anyone about it around me (except on the internet). Fun fact, this 3D cartoon Mario Kart-like game was created by the same team who later created Gran Turismo, and contains an unlockable concept version of the track High Speed Ring, which was based on the first level Toon Island II.

What was your favorite hidden gem?

[PS1] Spongebob Squarepants - 7 Episodes (No VCD Adapter Needed)

Thumbnail

I've thrown together a CUE/BIN that can be emulated or burned to CD and played on actual hardware. Each episode uses the PlayStation's native video encoder - often used for game cutscenes and intros. I recommend playing this on a CRT to obfuscate some of the compression artifacts.

It comes with 7 early SpongeBob Squarepants episodes (Help Wanted, Reef Blower, Pizza Delivery, Ripped Pants, Frankendoodle, Bubble Buddy and Band Geeks) - as well as some misc. early ads and an excerpt from the SNL bit featuring Tom Kenny.

Extra bonus - 'Help Wanted' retains the original show introduction when the pilot first aired in 1999.

Controls:

LR1 skips between episodes, LR2 rewinds/fast-forwards, Triangle/Start goes to the main menu, X/Select plays, pauses and completes menu selections.

Nothing revolutionary, but I've always wanted to get custom FMV on the PlayStation without the use of a VCD add-on:

Non-gamer trying to find gift for gamer hubby PLZ HELP

Super new to Reddit in general and I am NOT a tech or gaming person so bear with me. I’m wanting to get my husband an original PlayStation for Christmas. He is always talking about how he wished he had one so our kids can play the games he used to play growing up. Example: our daughter loves A Bugs Life and he used to play that game when he was a kid. I’ve found some on EBay that are reasonably priced but I know I’m gonna need a special adapter to play it on our tv. From what I’ve read, it won’t look very good unless you have some specific type of adapter or something? I need to know EXACTLY what I need to order. Explain it to me like I’m 5. We have a brand new Samsung 4K miniLED tv if that helps?

The Endboss 1 of 10...

Who knows that knows why this is now my lowest rankest game of all Ps1 games I played this far (19.01.1996)

But seriously, this isn't just the worst designed end boss I have played on the Ps1 this far. It might is one of the worst bosses in all of retro gaming. Especially for this game.
It already was a very subpar platformer but this boss. Oh boy how did Sony allowed this? This game was supposed to be a big hit and not just some shovelware they not cared about.

Hi all, looking to purchase a PS2 controller and don't have much experience with them. Is this fake or genuine? It's listed as "official" on eBay but have also seen some similar ones listed as "unofficial" so had me wondering. Thank you.

I got into ps1 again lately, looking for games to play with a friend - I have Army Men Air Attack and plan to pick up Future Cop LAPD.

I used to play twisted metal but not feeling that currently, anything else you'd recommend?

Made an English patch for Spectral Force: Itoshiki Jaaku (PS1)

This one never got an English release, so I’ve been patching it myself, and there’s now a beta with the dialogue, menus and interface in English. Patch, screenshots and how to apply it are here: https://github.com/dienp/spectral-force-3-eng-patch. I’ve beaten it with Shinba, the only lord you can pick at the start, but the first draft was machine translated and other routes are untested, so if something looks off, grab a screenshot and let me know.

PS1 to you HDMi Bitfunx adapter

Hey, does anyone here have this Bitfunx PS1/PS2-HDMI converter?

https://a.aliexpress.com/\\_EIFdqo6. I don't need upscaling, but I want to be sure if this adapter really outputs 1080p even from 240 PS1 resolution? I want to run PS1 on newer TV/computer monitor, which have only higher resolutions and HDMI only (with full HD support).

Thanks for probable recommendations of Levelhike, RS2x, component, etc. I just want to know better this adapter.

PSone plays video from an SD card through controller port

A Raspberry Pi Pico 2 plugged into controller port 2 reads video from an SD card and streams it to a homebrew player on a modded PSone. The port only moves about 23 KB/s, so the video is heavily compressed (around 350 bytes per black & white frame, 15 fps).

Ciao a tutti,
